Of all the upcoming action movies headed our way in the coming months, I can safely say that Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is the only one that, after first watching the trailer, I said, “Wait, what is this movie about?” It seems Mike and Nick are in love with the same woman — Alice, naturally — which seems pretty straightforward until you throw in the time travel. Critics screened the movie before it hit the 2026 movie calendar, and they’re here to help us sort through it.

The cast is promising, starring James Marsden as Mike, Vince Vaughn as Nick and Eiza González as Alice. Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice’s supporting cast is equally as stellar, according to Kristy Puchko of Mashable, especially Ben Schwartz, but also Keith David, Jimmy Tatro, Emily Hampshire, Stephen Root and more. The critic calls this “defiantly outside the box” adventure a “must-see crowd-pleaser,” writing:

RogerEbert’s Brian Tallerico rates the movie 3 out of 4 stars, loving how BenDavid Grabinski pushes back against the sanding down of streaming originals. Vince Vaughn, meanwhile, does his best work in years in the dual roles of Nick and “Future Nick,” who travels back in time to right a wrong he committed against Mike. The critic writes:

Brian Truitt of USA TODAY also gives Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice 3 stars out of 4, writing that it doesn’t quite make the most of its time-travel premise but can be forgiven because it delivers a unique story, colorful personalities and a sneakily heartwarming message. Truitt continues:

Germain Lussier of Gizmodo says there’s “so much hilarious randomness” in Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice that you can’t help but “bask in that glorious excess and passion.” The movie gives off vibes of, “Let’s do this just because it’s cool and fun,” Lussier writes, and while he says it all probably shouldn’t work, it very, very much does. The critic says:

Jesse Hassenger of AV Club, meanwhile, doesn’t share the above opinions, giving the movie a C- and calling it a “strenuous misfire.” The critic gives Vince Vaughn credit for imparting genuine pathos into his “future” character, but overall, the time travel element of the movie seems to be just for marketing purposes. Hassenger explains:

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice sounds like a bizarre and fun time, given what the critics are saying (the title alone indicates some silliness is afoot). It’s garnered a 74% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, and if this sounds like a good way to spend 107 minutes, the time-travel gangster flick is available to stream now with a Hulu subscription.

While I’d never really want to live out the plot of the beloved comedy Wedding Crashers, I would love to have any member of the cast crash my wedding. It turns out that’s totally possible too, because a wedding photographer shared the story of how Vince Vaughn literally became a wedding crasher on the day a lucky couple tied the knot.

Well, wedding crasher might be a strong word, but he certainly wasn’t an expected guest. Back in November of 2024, Ali Waldman and Evan Eshelman got married at the InterContinental at The Wharf in Washington D.C. Meanwhile, Vaughn was seemingly in town for a concert. So, as the couple was taking photos, the actor happened to walk by, “crashing” their wedding in a way, as photographer Venessa Ramirez told People:

She went on to say that after this happened, they “literally couldn’t stop talking about it.” And if I were them, I’d act the same way.

If any celebrity unexpectedly ended up at my wedding, I’d be in shock and overjoyed over the serendipity of it all. However, if a member of the Wedding Crashers cast specifically showed up, I’d probably freak out. Plus, it’s easily one of Vince Vaughn’s best movies and Wedding Crashers is so quotable that it’d be incredibly surreal to have the star of such an iconic movie literally crash a wedding (or just unexpectedly walk through it).

Overall, the experience of having the Bad Monkey star pop into this wedding was one that made this special day even more special. The photographer went on to explain that after the actor said his congratulations, they took a photo together, and he was incredibly kind the whole time:

While a wedding day tends to be one of the best days of people’s lives, this whole interaction added “such a memorable surprise to an already beautiful wedding day,” Ramirez said.

Along with this being a lovely moment for the couple, it’s also a wholesome story for me, a person who would love a Wedding Crashers 2. While it’s been said that a sequel is not impossible, we also haven’t heard much about it, so I don’t think it’s very likely. So, it’s nice to see Vaughn crashing a wedding in a very wholesome way.

Now, as for what Vince Vaughn is up to now, as far as we know, he’s not crashing any weddings. However, he is working on Bad Monkey Season 2 (you can stream Season 1 with an Apple TV subscription). So, that’s certainly something to get excited about.

When it comes to crashing weddings, though, if you want to relive the hilarity of Vince Vaughn doing it on screen with Owen Wilson, you can stream Wedding Crashers with an HBO Max subscription.

One of Apple TV+’s best shows, Bad Monkey, already had major star power because it’s led by Vince Vaughn. However, it just got more because John Malkovich is joining Season 2. We also learned a bit about who he’ll be playing in the series, too, and it’s given me a dream for the upcoming episodes that involves the show’s leading man.

John Malkovich Is Joining Bad Monkey Season 2

While the first season of Bad Monkey was a book-to-screen adaptation of Carl Hiaasen’s novel, Season 2 will be an original story with Malkovich set to seemingly play a crime boss.

The Being John Malkovich actor will play a character named Spencer, per THR, and he’s a “leader of a big criminal organization in South Florida.”

Considering Yancy’s whole thing is solving crimes, I’d guess he will not get along with this Spencer. So, that means when Bad Monkey returns and we can watch new episodes with an Apple TV+ subscription, we’ll hopefully get to see some sort of silly standoff between Vaughn and Malkovich.

I Hope His Character Ends Up In A Hilarious Standoff With Vince Vaughn’s Yancy

Season 1 of Bad Monkey gave us some incredible action and some wild sequences – like the moment when Zach Braff’s character got covered in blood while sawing off Rob Delaney’s character’s arm. The show has a knack for balancing dark situations with comedy, and I have a feeling we’re going to get instances like that between Vaughn and Malkovich’s characters (or at least I’m hoping that’s the case).

While I am hopeful these two will go head-to-head frequently, my primary dream is that they have some sort of huge and really funny standoff at the end.

Just take a look back at Vaughn’s best work and Malkovich’s best movies, and you’ll understand what I mean. They are both such gifted comedic actors who, for lack of a better term, know how to commit to the bit. Therefore, seeing them go head-to-head in this wacky Florida-set comedic mystery sounds like a great climax for this new season.

Vaughn and Malkovich actually both starred in the 2020 movie Arkansas together, which is also a quirky crime thriller. On top of that, thinking about movies like Malkovich’s Being John Malkovich and even the action comedy Red have me very excited to see him and his comedic skills go up against Vaughn.

So, here’s hoping that we get some sort of epic and hilarious standoff between these two, because I’m pretty positive it’d be incredible.

Personally, I think it’s certainly possible for this to happen. However, at the moment, we really don’t know much about Bad Monkey Season 2. So far, we know the upcoming Apple TV+ series is moving production from Florida to LA, and we know that it will be executive-produced by Vaughn, Bill Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, Matt Tarses, Liza Katzer and Adam Sztykiel.

We currently don’t know when the show will come out or who else will join/return to the cast at this point. However, we do know Vaughn and Malkovich will be there, and I know I cannot wait to see how their characters interact whenever Bad Monkey Season 2 hits our screens.

If you haven't checked out Vince Vaughn's Nonnas with a Netflix subscription yet, you're missing out on one of the most joyous movies of the year. Critics and audiences alike are loving the movie that tells the true story of a man's attempt to run a restaurant with Italian grandmothers as the chefs, and the challenges of starting something new in life. I was surprised to hear Vaughn refer to it as an "outlaw movie," but after hearing his reasoning, it makes sense.

When I hear the word "outlaw," I think of the best Western movies of all time, but that's not what Vince Vaughn was talking about when he referred to Nonnas as such in an interview with THR. Rather, he explained how this new 2025 movie flies in the face of the types of movies that Hollywood is trying to make nowadays:

Vaughn certainly has a vested interest in promoting Nonnas as a movie for all ages, but he's right. It's a movie for anyone who loves their grandmothers or has had to go through the process of losing a loved one and searched for a way to honor them. It's a great and wholesome story, made better by the fact that the Enoteca Maria is a real restaurant that readers can visit should they feel compelled to do so.

It will be interesting to see how the popularity and acclaim of Nonnas will impact Netflix's decision-making on what original movies it pursues in the future. The feel-good drama might not have made waves in the theaters compared to other tentpole features, but it's a hit with people enjoying movies from their living rooms and looking to watch some great Italian food be made.

Of course, it's not just the Italian food that has people so in love with this movie. As previously mentioned, Nonnas dives into grief and moving forward after the loss of a loved one. It almost has the vibe of a Hallmark movie, but with better production value. And, at the risk of offending anyone who loves those movies, it has a bit more meat to it than comparable movies I've seen.

Now, all this to say I don't think we're going to see Nonnas 2: Back In The Kitchen, and Vince Vaughn and Netflix will have to go back to the drawing board to find a movie that's quite as appealing as this. Fortunately, other movies like La Dolce Villa have filled a similar niche in being an accessible, wholesome movie for all ages. So maybe this "outlaw" movie format will become more commonplace by this time next year.

Nonnas is available to stream right now on Netflix, and if you haven't seen it already, what are you doing? That said, I warn anyone who watches not to check it out unless you have an Italian restaurant nearby to visit afterwards, because you will be craving some of those delicious meals not long after watching.

I've honestly called myself a "foodie" more times than I can count, so to watch Nonnas with my Netflix subscription was like a dream come true—or sheer torture, considering how ridiculously delicious the food looked and how famished it left me. But ironically enough, though food was everywhere on set, stars Vince Vaughn and Joe Manganiello did not consume nearly as much as you might imagine considering how much food is visible on the screen from scene to scene.

Nonnas debuted on the 2025 Netflix schedule recently, and there are so many shots of tasty food from the eponymous grandmas. Of course, when I spoke to Vaughn, I had to inquire as to how much indulged. He did admit it was just "a little bit," because you do attempt to be virtuous—but even he gets hungry viewing the movie now.

The food in Nonnas honestly is the stuff of dreams. Think: ultimate level of comfort food. These are the kind of dishes you could probably see on many of the best cooking shows, but that also have a home-y quality you'd (probably) never get from a pro chef. The experience is tangible, and honestly, I feel this movie deserves to have several slots on our best cooking scenes list. At the very list, Netflix audiences seem to be into watching the flick.

What about stars who weren’t in as many of the cooking scenes? That’s where Joe Manganiello comes in, who responded that he didn’t get to eat as much because he wasn’t in as many of those memorable food scenes – which is wild considering how many scenes viewers see him eating in. However, behind-the-scenes, Mangianello told me he was absolutely tucking it back in the NY and New Jersey dining scene:

My god, twelve-course meals? Four times a week? I don’t think my stomach would be able to handle that. I personally believe Nonnas is the feel-good movie of the year, but my god, I don’t think my body would be feeling too good after that.

The good news? The cast was fed in some capacity, even if it was small, little bits here and there on set or huge get-togethers with the cast and crew. Now, excuse me while I figure out how to put together my own Sunday gravy.

The 2025 movie schedule is rolling right along, and a number of titles have struck a chord with cinephiles. Days ago, such a film just became available to Netflix subscription holders, and it’s the Vince Vaughn-led dramedy Nonnas. So far, general audiences seem to be loving the film, and they’re not the only ones. Critics also seem to be taken with this delightful tale of food and family. What’s more, this latest release marks a rare instance in which pundits and general viewers are close to being in exact agreement percentage-wise.

Vince Vaughn has had both movies and TV shows hit well with both audiences and critics over the course of his career. However, I have to say he and his collaborators should also be very proud of his latest film. As of this writing, Nonnas has a 78% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is nothing to turn one’s nose up at. On top of that, the Stephen Chbosky-helmed film also holds an 81% critics score. The fact that those scores are so close speaks to the appeal of the movie.

It’s really not that often that critics and general audiences are in such close agreement on a given movie. There are instances where their responses are somewhere in the same ballpark, but a 3% difference on Rotten Tomatoes is just very impressive. More recently, there have been cases in which the two camps have been more divided. For example, the two sides didn’t agree on A Minecraft Movie earlier this year, and a similar situation happened with fans and critics of 2024’s IF.

The fact of the matter is that pundits and fans just aren’t always going to agree on certain flicks as has long been the case. Some fans even rounded up various movies they believed critics were wrong about. With that in mind, it’s definitely a novelty whenever all of these movie buffs manage to get on the same page.

On the surface, it’s not hard to see why the movie-viewing public would be so taken with Nonnas. Inspired by a true story, the film centers around Joe Scaravella (Vince Vaughn), who seeks to open an Italian restaurant as a way of honoring his late mother. Joe does just that, and he recruits several Italian grandmothers – who are affectionately known as Nonnas – to help him run his business. Vaughn is joined by some esteemed actresses in Susan Sarandon, Lorraine Bracco, Brenda Vaccaro and Talia Shire. Linda Cardellini, Joe Manganiello and Drea de Matteo are also part of the ensemble.

There’s even been praise for the Vince Vaughn-fronted film from within CinemaBlend, as our own Alexandra Ramos deemed it the feel-good movie of the year. Ramos also had the chance to chat with Vaughn about the movie, with the star discussing Joe Scaravella’s passion for cooking and more.

By the looks of it, the filmmakers have cooked up something special with Nonnas. Let’s be honest, in most cases, it’s hard to pass up a humorously sweet movie with a solid premise, a likable cast and tantalizing food scenes. I may or may not be getting hungry just thinking about this. That aside though, why not take a cue from fans and general audiences by checking out Nonnas now that it’s been released amid the 2025 Netflix movie schedule? And, while you’re doing that, I’ll go find some pasta.

Sometimes a movie doesn't just tell a great story—it wraps you up in it and leaves you warm and fuzzy when it's over. That's what we call a feel-good movie. This year, Vince Vaughn starred in one, and the story of how this restaurant happened in real life, and the man behind it, is one I won't soon forget.

Nonnas, a new movie on the 2025 Netflix schedule, follows a man who honors his mother's memory by opening a restaurant operated by nonnas—Italian grandmothers—whipping up home-cooked meals. It's a true story, and in an interview with Vaughn about the film, he described how he met the real gentleman whose life inspired the movie and how the restaurant's success has expanded over the years:

The restaurant that Vaughn references is the same one featured in the film, Enoteca Maria, which is still open on Staten Island today. It’s intending to stay the only one, too, as Vaughn said the owner is not looking to expand and wishes to “create a connection” with patrons. That was something the movie reflected too, as the actor told me:

Hearing Vince Vaughn talk about his experience with the real-life Joe (named Joe Scaravella) will only make you love the movie more, because you can tell how much dedication and love was poured into it. There are plenty of great feel-good TV shows and films out there that you could watch – some you can probably even check out with a Netflix subscription. However, I’d personally say Nonnas is the most joyous film of 2025 so far.

The fact that the film is based on a true story, and it’s still open to this day, makes this movie even better, because it’s all about the sense of community. As someone who loves food as a side-passion of hers – literally any cooking show I will always check out – Nonnas is a foodie’s paradise. It’ll give you the same vibes as watching Chef for the first time. But while you might come there for the pretty-looking and delicious food, you stay for the soul of the film.

And that’s really what culinary arts is all about at the end of the day, uniting under a great experience and some good food. If you haven’t had the chance to check out Nonnas, I’d fully suggest it.

Anthony Michael Hall was a staple of some of the best movies of the '80s and one of the members of the Brat Pack. While he found plenty of success during that time frame, he hit a rough patch as the '80s turned into the '90s. Now, The Breakfast Club star is reflecting on feeling lost during that time, and he revealed some solid advice he got from Vince Vaughn that helped him move forward.

While Hall’s early-on resume is impressive, it didn’t stay that way, there were some hard years. However, even with these bumps in the road, he’s had no problems talking about his past struggles post-Hughes/Brat Pack era. For example, the Weird Science actor shared with People that his career exists because of those incredible Hughes titles, however, he also struggled to find work after, explaining:

The Brat Pack phenomenon and John Hughes' fame is a fascinating part of Hollywood history, in my opinion. For Hall, and any young star of the time connected to him, to explode onto the scene only to be a whisper a decade later is mindboggling.

Hall then went on to share that amidst his troubles and search for work during his 20s, a chance encounter with Vince Vaughn helped change his trajectory. He stated that the actor was someone he looked up to previously and hearing his advice about the business really hit home:

I always love to hear this kind of encouragement from Hollywood vets. And, this isn’t the only example of the Bad Monkey actor being a person of comfort and inspiration for his fellow peers.

Vaughn's acting influenced Bradley Cooper, and a young Adam Brody has also stated that the A-Lister’s comedy stylings and career have been a source of inspiration. Needless to say, it seems that the Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story alum has shown his true and supportive colors to his fellow actors.

These days, Anthony Michael Hall is thriving, so I'm thrilled he received this advice that encouraged him to keep going all those years ago.

When I think of Bad Monkey, I immediately think of Florida. Honestly, the Florida Keys are a character in the quirky whodunnit that’s based on Carl Hiaasen’s novels. So, I’m thrilled that we’ll get to spend another season with Vince Vaughn’s Yancy solving crimes in this wild place. However, I’m upset that production is reportedly moving to Los Angeles for Season 2 rather than filming it all on location.

Apple TV+ Has Renewed Bad Monkey For A Second Season

A few months after Bad Monkey’s run on the 2024 TV schedule, Apple TV+ announced that it had been renewed for a second season. The show is a book-to-screen adaptation of Carl Hiaasen’s work, and according to Deadline, Season 2 will be an original story that isn’t based on one of the author’s books. However, it will be “influenced” by it.

In the announcement about the renewal of the great Apple TV+ series, the mystery comedy’s showrunner and executive producer Bill Lawrence said:

Knowing how much Lawrence loves this project and witnessing how great Vince Vaughn and the ensemble cast were in it, I can’t wait to see the return of Andrew Yancy. However, there was one reported update about where they’ll film this season that makes me upset and worried.

However, Production Will Reportedly Move From Florida To LA, And I Don’t Love That

When I spoke with Bill Lawrence about Bad Monkey earlier this year, he told me that Hiaasen “wouldn’t really let” them make the show unless it was filmed in Florida, so that’s what they did. Ultimately, it led to some wild wildlife interactions and requirements that impacted the comedy, and it added a needed tropical feel to a project that made its location a character.

However, apparently, Season 2 will be moving from Miami and the Florida Keys to LA, according to a report from Deadline. This claim came from sources who spoke to the publication, and they alleged that “the move was important to Los Angeles-based Vaughn and the crew also faced a lot of weather-related challenges while filming Season 1.”

The report does clarify that they will do “pickup shoots” in Florida, so we can likely expect some of that tropical view and fun wildlife in the show. However, it feels like there will be a lot less of it, which upsets me.

I spoke to the cast of Bad Monkey about Florida playing a character in this show – with Zach Braff even telling me a story about a “man date” he went on with Rob Delaney that involved alligators – and it was clear that it had a big impact. I loved seeing Vaughn’s Yancy traverse around The Keys and the characters solving crimes on beaches. I also was a big fan of the deer, turtles and other wildlife that played a big part in the show. Overall, I think it's best when projects like this can be filmed on location, because it really adds a level of immersion that's hard to fully get on a set.

Logistically, I get why this move is happening. As the report stated, a bunch of the cast is based in LA, plus Bill Lawrence also has Season 3 of Shrinking, an HBO comedy with Steve Carell and a Scrubs reboot in the works. There's no doubt it’d be hard to uproot and move to Florida. I also assume it will be easier to film on sets there and pick up exteriors and such later.

However, I’m still upset about this move. One of the reasons why I love Bad Monkey so much was the unexpected and authentic energy it had because they literally filmed it in Florida. While I’m sure they’ll be able to maintain it, especially since they’ve established the characters and their surroundings, it’s still a bummer.

Don’t get it twisted though, I’ll still be tuned in to watch Season 2 with my Apple TV+ subscription whenever it comes out, and I’ll likely enjoy it too. I'll just miss that extra bit of Florida flair.

In the book-to-screen adaptation of Carl Hiaasen’s Bad Monkey, it was important to make Florida a character. So important, in fact, that the author wanted to make sure Bill Lawrence’s show was shot in his home state. Well, that’s exactly what the showrunner did, and with it came some “bananas” filming requirements and animal interruptions that influenced the show.

To Blow Up A House, The Bad Monkey Team Had To Think About The Turtles

When I spoke to Bill Lawrence about Bad Monkey, I asked him about the role Florida played in the show, because it adds so much to the story. In response, the Ted Lasso co-creator told me that because Hiaasen is a bestselling novelist, a reporter for the Miami Herald, and an “environmental crusader,” he “wouldn’t really let” them make the series unless they “shot in Florida.” So, they did, and that led to some challenges involving the wildlife in The Keys.

Lawrence explained this by using an example from Episode 8 – “The Russian Mob Is Very Active in Key West.” Notably, a house blew up during that installment, and it was a challenge to pull off in real life too, because they had a particular window where they were allowed to do it, as he told me:

Speaking of turtles, the Scrubs creator also told me that the street lights are red in the show because if they were white, the turtles would assume they were the moon and then walk into the road, and that would be bad.

However, they were game to make their show work with these requirements, as the producer said:

The animals certainly were everywhere, because they’re in the show too. And that’s what led to Bill Lawrence explaining an improvised moment that came out of all these precautions they had to take.

The Fun BTS Bad Monkey Story Involving Alex Moffat And A Key Deer

In Bad Monkey, former SNL star Alex Moffat plays Evan Shook, the man overseeing the big yellow house next to Vince Vaughn’s Andrew Yancy’s home. His character is confused by the red lights around the neighborhood and he is always complaining about the animals. It turns out, a real-life moment added to all that, as Lawrence explained:

Throughout Bad Monkey, Moffat’s character is constantly at odds with Yancy and quite frankly all the wildlife that lives around his home. From raccoons to bees to deer, the guy is consistently dealing with animals in funny ways, and knowing that some of those instances weren't planned, they just happened, makes it even better.

Considering improv-king Vince Vaughn is the star of the show, it also tracks that spontaneous moments would happen with the wildlife, and I love that it impacted the show.

A lot of Bad Monkey is shot practically, for example, Zach Braff recalled just how bloody one of his scenes was, and Lawrence confirmed that that house did explode. That alone makes the show one of Apple TV+’s best, but understanding the effort that went into pulling this off while also protecting the animals makes it even better!

Charlotte Lawrence, who plays Caitlin Stripling in the show, spoke about how when she’d shoot scenes with Vaughn, she couldn’t help but notice his “constant comedic genius.” She told me:

This falls right in line with what Bradley Cooper said about working with the actor on Wedding Crashers. Vince Vaughn is an incredibly talented improviser, and he’s all for doing lots of takes and trying something new each time, as the cast of Bad Monkey told me.

When Vaughn responded to The Hangover star’s viral awe of him, he noted how much he loves improvising and how it’s like “writing in the moment.” He also explained that it’s “just exciting to give yourself over to that process.” Clearly, that excitement is contagious.

It sounds like that’s what he and Meredith Hagner (who plays Eve Stripling) did as they shot their first scene together in Bad Monkey’s pilot. She recalled the moment when Eve and Yancy met in a car, and her character said he looked like a waiter. They go on to quip at each other about it, but apparently, there was more fun involved that was cut, as she told me:

It sounds “very hard,” but it also sounds incredibly fun! As I spoke with the majority of the Bad Monkey cast about this premiere, a lot of them noted that it was hard to pick one great one-liner from Vince Vaughn, because he was constantly switching up what he’d say with each take. So, I can see why Hagner and Lawrence were so enthusiastic about working with him in the same way Bradley Cooper was.

There’s a reason there are so many great one-liners in both Wedding Crashers and Bad Monkey from Vaughn, and it’s because he’s ready to try something new and fire off a fresh funny line. It makes sense why his co-stars on the Apple TV+ show noted how hard it was to not break in scenes, and it's a testament to his comedic brilliance.

By mid-August, the busy summer movie season has usually run its course. However, for the best streaming services, there is never really a slow season. There’s always something new on Netflix (which has my top movie this week) or something coming up on Hulu that you can watch. What’s difficult is finding the best content among everything that’s available. Luckily, we have a few of the best choices from what’s new this week within the streaming realm.

Almost all the major streaming platforms have at least one major original series or movie on offer. We have a Star Wars animated series for kids that's being added to Disney+ and a Hulu animated series not for kids. There’s also a pair of interesting original movies with unlikely duos that look to combine action and comedy just perfectly. Here’s what’s worth looking at this week.

New Movies

The Union (Netflix) 

In The Union, Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry play former high school sweethearts who reunite 25 years later. Little does he know that she’s a super spy, and she’s about to recruit him to work on a secret mission. Is the premise nuts? Sure but, if the action is solid and the chemistry between the two leads is there, nobody is going to care. One gets the sense that, at the very least, the cast had fun making the movie, and that can go a long way. Needless, this is my top movie, and I'm looking forward to checking it out!

The Union Premieres August 16 on Netflix.

The Woman King (Hulu)

2022’s The Woman King was one of the best-reviewed films of the year by both professional critics and general audiences, and yet it made less than $100 million worldwide at the box office and was ignored by the Oscars. That means there's a solid chance you may have missed one of the best movies of 2022, and you should fix that. The film stars Viola Davis as the leader of an all-female warrior unit in West Africa in the early 1800s. Director Gina Prince-Bythewood's historical epic features some impressive performances as well as excellent action. Don’t miss this one again.

The Woman King arrives on August 13 on Hulu.

The Fast & Furious Franchise (Peacock) 

The Fast & Furious movies are collectively the biggest current franchise that Universal has, and yet being able to watch the films with a Peacock subscription has been hit or miss due to agreements Universal signed before launching its own platform. This week the first eight Fast & Furious films join the ninth, which was added earlier this month, meaning you can watch almost the entire franchise in one place. Fast X is currently available with a Prime Video subscription if you need to watch all the Fast & Furious movies in order.

The Fast & Furious movies arrive August 12 on Peacock.

 Jackpot! (Prime Video) 

Most of us would do just about anything to win a lottery jackpot. The movie Jackpot!, from Bridesmaids director Paul Feig, suggests a hilarious future in which the way to win the lottery is to stay alive while everybody else tries to kill you and take your money. Awkwafina stars as the winner in fear for her life, and John Cena plays a guy trying to help her survive. The movie looks to combine Awkwafina's natural comedic timing with Cena's own comic abilities, while also giving the former WWE star plenty to do physically.

Jackpot! premieres August 15 on Prime Video.

New TV

Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures Season 2 (Disney+)

So many Star Wars fans became enthralled with the franchise as young kids but, now, even younger children have an easy entry into the galaxy far, far, away. Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures Season 2 (which consists of 11 episodes) arrives for those with a Disney+ subscription this week. The show is set during the High Republic era, the same time frame as the recent live-action series The Acolyte. Of course, these stories are more geared toward children and focus on a group of young Jedi learning lessons and trying to make good choices.

Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures Season 2 premieres August 14 on Disney+.

Solar Opposites: Complete Season 5 (Hulu) 

In an era where a streaming series can be canceled seemingly without warning, the fact that Solar Opposites has made it to Season 5 is an accomplishment unto itself. Despite a high-profile voice actor change prior to Season 4, the show has remained popular among those with a Hulu subscription. The latest season promises fresh hijinks and new characters and looks to be exactly what fans are expecting.

Solar Opposites Season 5 premies August 12 on Hulu.

Bel-Air Season 3 (Peacock) 

When it was first announced that The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the sitcom that made Will Smith a star, was going to be remade as a dramatic series, there were a lot of questions. What’s clear now is that the show is working for a lot of people, as Bel-Air premieres its third season this week.

Bel-Air Season 3 arrives August 15 on Peacock.

Bad Monkey (Apple TV+) 

I’m sure once I watch Bad Monkey with my Apple TV+ subscription, I’ll understand what the title means. All I know is that a good detective story with more than a little humor, courtesy of lead actor Vince Vaughn, looks like exactly the sort of thing I’d enjoy. Vaughn stars as a suspected police detective, who gets a bit too close to a murder case and then has to figure his way out of it.

Bad Monkey premieres August 15 on Apple TV+.

RuPaul's Drag Race Global All Stars Season 1 (Paramount+)  

It’s difficult to undersell just how popular RuPaul’s Drag Race has become. The series has multiple iterations domestically, but it is now also produced in multiple countries around the world. Now, it's time for the Drag Race World Championship. RuPaul's Drag Race Global All-Stars brings together 12 former contestants from the various international versions of the show to compete against each other. Until a Paramount+ subscription gets you access to the international versions of the show, this will give fans a way to see how the game is played around the world.

Wedding Crashers is almost 20 years old at this point, but the film remains as funny as ever. The specific brand of raunchy comedy that rose to popularity in the 2000s is ever present, and produced unforgettable quotes spoken by actors like Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Some of the film is considered to be outdated by 2024 standards, but Vaughn’s way of delivering comedy is evergreen. Bradley Cooper thinks so too, as the Maestro actor recently lauded Vaughn for his immense talent, especially within Wedding Crashers, which they both starred in. Now, Vaugn is explaining his approach to comedy, and why it worked so well for the 2005 film.

Vaughn recently participated in a Hot Ones interview where host Sean Evans brought up Cooper’s admiration for the fellow actor, and asked him to explain his approach and thought process surrounding comedic delivery. The Swingers star explained that the comedy in that film comes from immense commitment, and treating ridiculous scenarios as deeply serious and important. This is also essential to improvising, which he compared to a conversation, saying:

The fact that this was Vince Vaughn’s approach to Wedding Crashers totally makes sense. The breakfast scene in particular comes to mind, when his character Jeremy comes down for breakfast after an insane night and tells his friend John, played by Wilson, what had just happened to him. Vaughn plays the scene completely serious, despite the insanity of what he is saying, which makes the scene even funnier. It is one of the best scenes in the movie, and having Vaughn explain his thought process behind-the-scenes on Wedding Crashers enhances the film for me.

Cooper specifically admired Vaughn’s willingness to continue asking for takes after he had nailed a comedic scene, and that he was willing to fail even after getting everything right. Vaughn explained that this was one of his favorite parts of the acting process, and embracing repetition can be an exciting way to be creative. He said:

This is such sound advice, and a great way to encourage actors to put ego aside when they approach a scene. The best comedic moments come from trial and error, especially when actors surprise their scene partner with a previously unwritten joke or delivery. It also helps to have a co-star like Owen Wilson, who can seamlessly adapt to anything thrown at him in the moment, and make it even funnier. It makes me miss seeing these two on screen together. There were rumblings in the past about a Wedding Crashers 2, but no news as of recent. Nevertheless, I’d still love to see the duo reunite on the big screen again, and maybe even bring Bradley Cooper along for the ride.

Matt Damon

In his movie debut, a very young Matt Damon can briefly be seen in 1988's Mystic Pizza as Steamer Windsor, the younger brother of Adam Storke's Charles, the clean-cut, country-club love interest of fun-loving pizzeria waitress Daisy (Julia Roberts). Steamer is present at an awkward dinner where Charles brings Daisy home to meet the family. 

Viola Davis

In the 1998 crime comedy Out of Sight, which is undoubtedly one of Steven Soderbergh's best movies, Viola Davis has a small role playing Moselle Miller, the wife of boxer Maurice "Snoopy" Miller (Don Cheadle). She would later go on to act alongside her Out of Sight co-star Jennifer Lopez in another crime flick, 2015's Lila & Eve.

Philip Seymour Hoffman

The 1992 Martin Brest melodrama Scent of a Woman memorably stars Al Pacino as a blind retired colonel and Chris O'Donnell as the prep-school student hired to watch over him, but it also features Philip Seymour Hoffman in one of his earliest performances as a fellow student named George Willis, Jr.

Carey Mulligan

The Bennet household is a bustling one in Joe Wright's 2005 adaptation of the Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice, so much so that you might have overlooked that — along with the likes of Keira Knightley, Rosamund Pike and Jena Malone — a teenaged Carey Mulligan is one of the Bennet sisters. (It's just one of many movies that prove Mulligan should be a much bigger star.) 

Elijah Wood

Long before he embarked on a quest to destroy the One Ring as Frodo in The Lord of the Rings, Elijah Wood was a successful child actor in films like The Adventures of Huck Finn, The Good Son, North and Flipper. However, before those starring roles, the pint-sized performer showed up as "Video Game Boy #2" in Back to the Future Part II.

Octavia Spencer

The 1999 Drew Barrymore comedy Never Been Kissed is jam-packed with unexpected actor appearances, from Jessica Alba to James Franco — together they play a dopey but popular high school couple — to Octavia Spencer. The latter plays a coworker of the main character Josie Geller (Barrymore) at the Chicago Sun-Times. 

Timothée Chalamet

With everything that goes on in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar — you know, that whole part about the astronauts who have to travel through a wormhole near Saturn in search of a new home for humankind — viewers may have forgotten that a fresh-faced Timothée Chalamet as Tim, the teen son of Matthew McConaughey's Cooper. 

Brie Larson

Well before she received an Oscar or donned a superhero cape, Captain Marvel star Brie Larson was a tween actress who had a main role in the short-lived WB sitcom Raising Dad. One of her first big-screen gigs, however, was as a popular Six Chick in the 2004 Jennifer Garner favorite 13 Going on 30. (Don't feel too bad, Mark Ruffalo didn't remember her either.) 

Charlize Theron

If you're a fan of The Wonders, you no doubt remember band members Guy (Tom Everett Scott), Lenny (Steve Zahn), Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech) and the bass player (Ethan Embry). However, you may not so readily remember that Charlize Theron is also in That Thing You Do!, as Guy's ex-girlfriend Tina, who leaves him for her dentist. 

Joe Manganiello 

Before making the ladies sweat in the Magic Mike franchise, Joe Manganiello was making Peter Parker sweat for an entirely different reason in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man film series, playing the high-school bully Flash Thompson. His character dated Kirsten Dunst's Mary Jane before she ended up with Spidey himself (Tobey Maguire). 

Seth Rogen

The titular teen protagonist of Donnie Darko (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) doesn't just have to deal with those disturbing visions of a rabbit-costumed man named Frank. He also has to deal with a pair of high school bullies, one of whom is played by Seth Rogen in his first ever movie appearance. 

Amy Adams

The Steven Spielberg-directed crime comedy Catch Me If You Can featured several now-well-known actresses before they were household names, including Ellen Pompeo, Elizabeth Banks and Amy Adams. The latter acted opposite Leonardo DiCaprio (played teenage con artist Frank Abagnale Jr.) as Brenda Strong, a young hospital worker who falls for Frank and his fraud. 

Keira Knightley

Given her uncanny resemblance to Natalie Portman, it's only fitting that a teenage Keira Knightley appeared as Sabé, a handmaiden and royal decoy for Portman's Padmé Amidala in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Even Knightley herself could use a reminder about who she played in the space trilogy!

Michael Fassbender

Years before memorable film roles in Inglourious Basterds, Jane Eyre, the X-Men movies and his Oscar-nominated turn in Shame, Michael Fassbender made his film debut in the 2006 action epic 300. He played the character of Stelios, a young, spirited and highly skilled Spartan soldier fighting under Gerard Butler's King Leonidas.

Sandra Oh

"Gupta? Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. The queen is coming!" It's one of the most memorable lines uttered in The Princess Diaries and it's said by none other than a pre-Grey's Anatomy Sandra Oh. Joining Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews in the beloved cast, Oh plays the humorous vice principal at Mia Thermopolis's school. 

Margot Robbie

Before her big breakout in The Wolf of Wall Street — and even longer before she painted the world pink with the phenomenon that is Barbie — rom-com fans got their first introduction to Margot in the 2013 romantic dramedy About Time. Robbie plays Charlotte, a woman that the main character Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) is crushing on before he meets his true love, Mary (played by Rachel McAdams).

Joaquin Phoenix

The 1989 Ron Howard-directed comedy Parenthood already has a stacked cast — Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, Keanu Reeves, Mary Steenburgen and Dianne Wiest, to name a few — before you even remember that one of the youngins in the movie is played by a teenage Joaquin Phoenix, then going by his birth name Leaf.

Samuel L. Jackson

It's hard to remember a time when Samuel L. Jackson wasn't a major movie star, but in the 1970s and '80s, the iconic actor was racking up bit parts in big titles, including Eddie Murphy's Coming to America. In the 1988 rom-com, Jackson plays a character known as "Hold-Up Man," an armed robber who has held up the local fast-food restaurant called McDowell's five times. 

Kristen Stewart

Though she has been acting professionally since grade school, Kristen Stewart didn't become a global star until she played moody teen Bella Swan in 2008's vampire romance Twilight. But years before that, she played a memorable part in the 2002 David Fincher thriller Panic Room, appearing opposite Jodie Foster as her character's daughter. 

Dakota Johnson

\Dakota Johnson had her big Hollywood breakthrough leading a beloved book-to-film adaptation, as Anastasia Steele in the erotic Fifty Shades film series. But she actually showed up in another huge movie five years earlier: 2010's The Social Network, as a college coed who spends the night with Sean Parker, played by Justin Timberlake. 

Gabrielle Union

Before she led the Clovers to cheer competition victory in 2000's Bring It On, Gabrielle Union was given supporting roles in '90s teen favorites like 10 Things I Hate About You and She's All That. The latter was actually her film debut, in which she appeared as popular girl Katie, a member of Zack Siler's (Freddie Prinze Jr.) friend group. 

Nicolas Cage

Technically, Nicolas Cage wasn't in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. But Nicolas Coppola was — when he made his feature film acting debut in the 1982 coming-of-age comedy, the actor was still going by his birth name. However, the Oscar-winning star would later change his name professionally to avoid nepotism allegations. (He is, of course, the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola and actress Talia Shire, and a cousin of director Sofia Coppola and actor Jason Schwartzman.)

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp memorably made his big-screen debut in the 1984 horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street, but movie fans might not remember that a short while later, he also appeared in Oliver Stone's war film Platoon as a young soldier fighting in the Vietnam War alongside the likes of Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger, Forest Whitaker and Kevin Dillon. 

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman has had a prolific acting career ever since she was a tween, starting from when she starred as the young protégée of a hitman in the 1994 action film Léon: The Professional at only twelve years old. Though that was an instantly memorable introduction to the performer, you might have forgotten that only a year later, she worked alongside screen greats like Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in the Michael Mann-directed classic, Heat. 

Tom Holland

He's most famous for spinning webs as Spider-Man but long before that, Tom Holland was making his film debut (and making audiences weep) in the 2012 disaster drama The Impossible, as a young boy desperately trying to reunite with his family following a horrific tsunami. 

Vince Vaughn

The heartwarming 1993 sports drama Rudy — about a young man (Sean Astin) who dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame — features an ironic pair of film-acting debuts. It was the first movie roles of both Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn, playing teaching assistant D-Bob and tailback Jamie O'Hara, respectively. That duo would famously go on to star in the 1996 buddy comedy Swingers. 

Ryan Gosling

Another early football role for a Hollywood heavyweight, a young Ryan Gosling already had some big TV gigs under his belt (The Mickey Mouse Club, Young Hercules) before he appeared as Alan Bosley, the wiry cornerback of T. C. Williams High School's football team in Remember the Titans. And if you remember that locker-room singalong, you know the little Goose had charisma even then!

Mila Kunis

Yes, that is a mini Mila Kunis in Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves — she played a friend of Wayne Szalinski's (Rick Moranis) niece, who throws a house party once it seems like all of the grown-ups have left for the evening. (Instead, the adults have been accidentally zapped to microscopic proportions, naturally.) 

Daniel Craig

Before he was Bond, James Bond, Daniel Craig was Ballard, John Ballard, in the 1998 historical drama Elizabeth. The British actor portrayed a priest-slash-assassin who conspired with the Duke of Norfolk (Christopher Eccleston) to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I (played by Cate Blanchett) from the throne. Of course, Bond would never treat the Queen of England that way!

Jake Gyllenhaal

Given that filmmaking is a family business for Jake Gyllenhaal — he is the son of film director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner, and the younger bro of the great actress Maggie Gyllenhaal — it's not a shock that the actor started young. He made his film debut at age ten in 1991's City Slickers, playing the son of Billy Crystal's character Mitch Robbins. 

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington is best known for playing crisis management expert Olivia Pope in the ABC drama series Scandal, but more than a decade earlier, she showed off her fix-it skills as Chenille Reynolds in Save the Last Dance, helping Julia Stiles's character Sara better integrate into their South Side high school and hip-hop culture at large. 

Ben Affleck

Like his famous best friend Matt Damon, Ben Affleck also began his acting career as a child and while eagle-eyed moviegoers no doubt remember spotting him in early-'90s films like School Ties and Dazed and Confused, they may have forgotten his uncredited early cameos, such as "Basketball Player 10" in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. 

We all have movies that had a profound impact on us, stories that inspire us or emotionally impact us. Wedding Crashers is probably not that movie. Wedding Crashers has hilarious lines and it makes us laugh until we hurt, but it probably didn't change many lives. But it was a career-defining movie for Bradley Cooper. While the movie was Cooper’s biggest film to date, he says watching Vince Vaughn be willing to fail changed his perspective on acting.

If you weren’t a fan of TV’s Alias there’s a good chance you didn’t know who Bradley Cooper was prior to Wedding Crashers, when he was cast in what became one of Cooper's best roles as the comedy’s villain. In a round table discussion with other Oscar-nominated actors for Variety. Cooper says that watching Vaughn really blew him away filming a particular scene and being willing to try things and fail. He explained…

It’s not uncommon, especially in comedies, for actors to try variations on a scene to see if they can find what works best. It leads to some hilarious gag reels if nothing else. But what impressed Cooper was the way Vaughn was able to make a scene work and then was willing to keep going anyway. Not everything Vaughn did worked, it sounds like some of the scenes went pretty badly, but it didn’t stop Vaughn from trying. Cooper continued…  

You have to be pretty willing to screw up in front of people to be an actor in the first place, but Vince Vaughn apparently took things to another level, and it changed Cooper’s perspective. Instead of focusing on doing it right, he’s now perhaps a bit more willing to get it wrong if it means possibly finding something special. 

Fans had hoped for Wedding Crashers 2 years ago but we haven't heard much about the idea for a while. Perhaps if Bradley Cooper wins an Oscar and thanks Vince Vaughn for his inspiration, we can make that a possibility again. 

There are plenty of comedies that have a lot of trouble standing the test of time, be it because of changing societal tastes or outdated references, but David Dobkin’s Wedding Crashers is not one of those titles. Twenty years after the beloved Frat Pack feature first hit theaters, the movie remains as funny as ever – and it’s largely because of a dynamite script and two leads who are outstanding improvisors. The film is full of amazing zingers and hilarious dialogue, and in celebration of its awesome legacy, we’ve assembled this feature highlighting the lines that still make us laugh.

“You shut your mouth when you’re talking to me!”

There are times when one can get so angry that their capacity to put together cogent thoughts completely fails. This line, as delivered by the great Rebecca De Mornay, is a perfect example of this, and it is the first big laugh in Wedding Crashers.

“We lost a lot of good men out there.” “Playing for the Yankees?”

It’s hinted at in the first act of Wedding Crashers that John Beckwith (Owen Wilson) isn’t as into the titular activity as he once was. Not only does this weird slip-up add evidence of these feelings, but it’s also a great mid-montage joke that John successfully rebounds from with aplomb.

“He lived with mother until he was 40! She tried to poison his oatmeal!”

It’s set up early on that Chazz Reinhold is a chaotic individual (a reputation to which he eventually lives up), as John’s declarative statement about him really tells you everything that you need to know about the man and how he lives.

“I happen to know everything there is to know about maple syrup. I love maple syrup. I love maple syrup on pancakes; I love it on pizza. I love to take a little bit and put it in my hair when I’ve had a rough week. What do you think holds it up, slick?”

The early exchange between John and Jeremy about their cover story – the latter pitching that they be the owners of a maple syrup conglomerate – is wonderfully illustrative of the brilliant chemistry between Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. The former’s razzle-dazzle about his syrup expertise is ridiculous, and it gets an equally silly response.

“Grow up, Peter Pan! Count Chocula!”

Why does John call Jeremy “Count Chocula” at the end of his burn regarding outlandish ideas for a cover story? There is no real answer, but it doesn’t matter, because that line gets a chuckle with every viewing of Wedding Crashers.

“Whatever! Make me a bicycle, clown!”

Jeremy has a big personality, and one gets the sense that it’s hard to put him back on his heels… but that’s exactly what happens when he tries his balloon-twisting gambit and runs into an intense young boy.

“Rule #76: No excuses! Play like a champion!”

The whole idea of Jeremy and John having a full list of rules that they’ve not only made but memorized is delightful, but I also just love to think about the past circumstances that saw “No excuses” added to the roster is particularly funny.

“I always knew my first time would be on a beach!”

With those 11 words from Gloria Cleary, Jeremy Grey’s wedding crashing adventure becomes an absolute nightmare, and Isla Fisher’s delivery initiates a cackle every time. If Jeremy’s story is a roller coaster in Wedding Crashers, that’s equivalent to the first big drop.

“I don’t think you’re appreciating the urgency here. Not only is she a virgin, she’s totally off the reservation! I’m terrified of this broad”

The intense fear that Vince Vaughn gets across in his urgency to hit the ejector seat from the Cleary wedding is gold that would properly fit in a horror movie.

“Oh please. You and I both know I’m a phenomenal dancer. Now I know you’re lying through your teeth. You’ll do anything to get me to go on this thing. Even if I have to walk into the lion’s den.”

Jeremy might be petrified of the possibility he might be trapped for a weekend with Gloria Cleary, but he is a man of integrity who will clearly never tolerate someone besmirching his talent for dancing.

“She took me below deck for forty-five minutes. I have no bodily fluids left in me.”

At the start of Wedding Crashers, time has slowly siphoned all of the fun of crashing weddings from John Beckwith, but in Jeremy’s case, it’s quickly drained from him.

“I’m not even going to say it, but you know I’m upset.”

If I had to wear those golf pants, I would be upset too.

“That’s what we call a sack lunch! Nomnomnomnomnom.”

Sack Lodge and his cronies are a bunch of jerks who inspire more teeth-grinding in Wedding Crashers than laughs, but Carson Elrod’s delivery as Flip following Jeremy being tackled in the football game is indisputably hilarious.

“Yeah! Crabcakes and Football. That's what Maryland does!”

I really have to give it up to Flip. The guy knows how to properly celebrate overkill aggression during a backyard game of touch football.

“If I had any air in my lungs, I’d scream at you.”

Poor, Jeremy. He just wanted to have some fun, and instead, he finds himself hooking up with a lunatic and regularly getting pummeled to the ground all in the name of being a good wingman. He’s a trooper.

“Gloria, please. I'm exhausted. I've had a very long day... my leg's cut and bleeding. I'm really not in the mood for this.”

Is Jeremy a cad who lies to women? Yes. Is some of what he experiences during his weekend with the Clearys an example of karmic, deserved retribution? Certainly. But boy, does Vince Vaughn sell pained exhaustion well for laughs.

“Don’t ever leave me. Because I’d find you!”

It’s clear that something is wrong with Gloria from the outset – with behavior like holding her breath and stamping when she doesn’t get her way with her father – but this is the line where she goes from being a weirdo to a terror.

“Call me, “Kitty Kat.”

It’s seriously awkward when Kathleen Cleary starts trying to seduce John, but things definitely get kicked up a notch when she demands her own spicy nickname and starts to growl at him.

“Pervert!”

When you think about it, Gloria Cleary is very obviously the daughter of Kathleen Cleary (Jane Seymour) – as evidenced by the bizarre, seductive cat-and-mouse game that she plays with John throughout their weekend together.

“Hey, what were they like anyway? They looked pretty good, are they real? Are they built for speed or comfort? What'd you do with them? Motorboat? You play the motorboat?”

A big part of what sells this line is Jeremy’s mood change. At the start of their conversation, he is wholly drained and seemingly ready to collapse, but the simple mention of Kathleen coming on to John brings him back to life.

“I’m a little too traumatized to have a scone.”

This line is extra funny when you consider the heaping plateful of food he puts together after arriving in the kitchen the morning after the roughest night of his life. He can eat (especially if it’s all covered in his favorite condiment: maple syrup), but scones are just too much after his traumatic experience with Gloria and her family.

“I'm gonna go see Dr. Finklestein and I'm gonna tell him we have a whole new bag of issues. We can forget about mom for a while.”

It’s nice to know that Jeremy recognizes the importance of good mental health. The guy clearly has a lot of issues before we meet him in the story, but one can especially understand why he would need to talk to a professional following his weekend with the Clearys.

“I mean like, hunt a human being right now, ‘Most Dangerous Game.’ Like a worthy adversary. Not a human being that's armed, but a clever, clever, human being who knows the jungle. Or the woods.”

I’m not going to lie: if this line were to be used as a jumping off point to create a ridiculous 20-years-later sequel to Wedding Crashers, you would not hear a single complaint coming from me. In fact, I downright hope it happens.

“I hope you flip your bike over and knock your two front teeth out! You leave me in the trenches taking grenades, John!”

There’s an argument to be made that John doesn’t ultimately show nearly enough respect for Jeremy in Wedding Crashers… but Jeremy sure does whine a lot (though the talent of Vince Vaughn makes it hilarious).

“Maybe there's something about me that I'm a little cuckoo. I know it's a surprise, I know it's not on the surface. I mean, I had an imaginary friend when I was kid, and his name was Shiloh! We used to play checkers with each other every day, and bless his heart, Shiloh would always let me win!”

Another line that could be the platform for a Wedding Crashers follow-up. Jeremy Grey is a fascinating individual, and the brief insights we get into his wild mind are amazing. I’d watch This Is 40-esque sequel that centers on Jeremy and Gloria’s relationship that is structured with flashback sequences that show their origins – including Jeremy’s bond with Shiloh.

“The painting was a gift, Todd. I'm taking it with me.”

If I were Jeremy, I perhaps wouldn’t want to keep a souvenir from one of the weirdest, most traumatic nights of my life, but it’s very clear that he is wired differently.

“She hasn't returned your phone calls, she hasn't responded to any of your letters, she didn't respond to the candygram. God knows what happened to the kitten you got for her. 'Cause she didn't keep it, and I know you're not raising the thing. I think it's very obvious at this juncture that she just flat out does not wanna see you.”

Vince Vaughn’s rapid fire delivery is best utilized when he can get on a run, and this bit from Jeremy as he tries to get John over his crush on Claire is the actor at the peak of his game.

“Listen, I’m getting married.” “Get out.”

A lot of credit goes to director David Dobkin and editor Mark Livolsi with this one. John’s instantaneous response to Jeremy’s “good” news is top-notch comedic timing aided by smart comedic minds working on the film in post-production.

“I almost nunchucked you. You don’t even realize.”

Will Ferrell was a cameo king in the 2000s, and Wedding Crashers is among his best surprise appearances. His serious arrival out of the shadows is excellent, but then he provides a tension breaker that is somehow both a relief and a red flag.

“Ma! The meatloaf!”

I have to imagine that this is a line that is quoted around the world whenever meatloaf is served. It might be the most quotable Wedding Crashers quote.

“I'm sorry I called you white trash.” “Apology accepted.” “And I'm sorry I called you hillbilly. I don't even know what that means.”

This is not only a funny exchange because of the Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn banter, but because it’s (unbeknownst to John and Jeremy) a callback to the verbal tussle between Rebecca De Mornay and Dwight Yoakam’s characters in the film’s opening scene.

“I’m John Beckwith, by the way.”

John really has to dig himself out a significant hole when it comes to winning the heart of Claire, and this line hilariously illustrates this fact. She doesn’t even know the guy’s real name, and it’s super funny how he drops in that information as an aside.

“I crashed a funeral earlier. It wasn’t my idea, I was basically dragged to it. I went with Chazz who you forgot to tell me is totally insane. He also might be a genius because it actually does work, he's cleaning up.”

The shock that this admission sends through the audience is fully earned. It’s a wildly horrible thing to do, and though it’s funny to witness as a viewer, it’s questionable that Claire instantly forgives him for the atrocious behavior.

“Share that with the Dalai Lama.”

Funny as it may be to see Jeremy get violently tackled in the game of touch football in Wedding Crashers, it is also immensely satisfying to not only see him get his revenge, but to deliver a sharp line to pair with his hit.

“So damn beautiful. With every death there comes rebirth. It’s the circle of life. We’re gonna be alright.”

Using a wedding to further heighten the emotions of a woman picked up while in mourning at a funeral? Chazz might be a moralless sociopath, but there is no arguing that the man is an artist at his horrible, horrible craft.

Now feeling the urge to give Wedding Crashers a rewatch? It’s exceptionally easy to do in the digital age, as the comedy is not only available for purchase on Blu-ray and DVD, but it’s also available to buy or rent from all major online retailers.

Few actors today set the internet on fire quite like Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, and Aubrey Plaza, and as such, one expects that there will be quite a lot of excitement that follows the news that all three of the stars and now attached to an upcoming film. Along with Vince Vaughn, the talented performers are set to be a part of Animal Friends, a new live-action/animation hybrid feature that is being developed by Legendary Entertainment.

This casting news comes to us from Deadline, and though specifics about the film's plot are being kept hush-hush for now, it is known that the project isn't as family friendly as the title may make it sound. Animal Friends is described as an "R-rated road trip adventure." Peter Atencio, who won an Emmy for his work on the sketch series Key & Peele and directed the 2016 comedy Keanu is helming the movie as his follow-up to The Machine starring Bert Kreischer and Mark Hamill.

Duo Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider are writing the script based on their original concept. Their previous credits include the animated series Gentlemen Lobsters, which they co-created, and the 2018 Netflix film The Package. Animal Friends will not only be produced by Legendary, but also Ryan Reynolds' production company Maximum Effort and Prime Focus Studios.

Reynolds has spoken about taking a career sabbatical in recent years, but it's unclear exactly when that is going to start given that he is presently one of the busiest people in the entertainment industry. Last year he was in three different movies – The Adam Project, Spirited and Bullet Train – and in 2023 he's been developing big projects including a Red Notice sequel for Netflix, John Krasninski's IF (which features a stellar cast), and Deadpool 3 for Marvel Studios. Perhaps he'll finally take a break one those projects and Animal Friends are finished?

Like Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa is also having a monster year with some very exciting projects in the pipeline. Audiences won't see him in Dune: Chapter 2 due to the unfortunate fate of Duncan Idaho in the first film, but he'll be playing the "flamboyant bad boy" villain in Fast X this summer, and will be back on the big screen as DC hero Arthur Curry at the end of the year in Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom.

Aubrey Plaza is presently coming off an amazing career year. On the feature front, she earned widespread acclaim for her work in the indie drama Emily The Criminal (which immediately started trending on Netflix when it hit the streaming service), and both critics and audiences went nuts for her role in the second season of the hit HBO series The White Lotus. She most recently starred in Guy Ritchie's Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre, co-starring Jason Statham, Cary Elwes and Hugh Grant.

As for Vince Vaughn, the actor was last seen featured in the two most recent seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm, and he has two projects in the works: Nic Pizzolatto's movie Easy's Waltz starring Al Pacino and the Apple TV+ drama Bad Monkey.

While most people might still agree that the finest chapter of the Jurassic Park movies (which you watch streaming), so far, is still the 1993 original, the second installment is certainly not without its fans. Director Steven Spielberg would return to helm 1997's The Lost World: Jurassic Park - which takes place on another island overrun with prehistoric beasts, and also sees dinosaurs visit to the United States for the first time in the franchise.

However, what really sells an entertaining thriller as a worthy follow-up (outside of the creepier suspense and breathtaking creature effects, of course) is the onscreen talent involved, such as Jeff Goldblum - who would later also play Dr. Ian Malcolm a fourth time in the 2022 movie release, Jurassic World Dominion - and future Academy Award winner Julianne Moore. Ted Lasso creator Bill Lawrence has a new show on the way, and it’s looking very promising -- and has a cast that features at least two alumni of the hit HBO series True Detective. We already knew Lawrence’s upcoming series would feature actor Vince Vaughn, who starred in Season 2 of True Detective. Now, an actress from the show’s inaugural season has joined the fray, as Bad Monkey added actress Michelle Monaghan to the fold in an interesting role. 

Michelle Monaghan (who played Martin’s wife Maggie in True Detective Season 1) joins the cast of Bad Monkey in the role of Bonnie. Deadline describes Bonnie as an enigmatic woman who is currently in a toxic marriage. And apparently, she's going to make things difficult for the main character Yancy, (played by Vince Vaughn), both personally and professionally. 

Yancy is at the center of Bad Monkey, which sees the former detective demoted to a restaurant inspector living in Florida. He's then pulled into some drama when a severed arm found by a fishing tourist leads to the discovery of greed and corruption that's occuring in Florida and the Bahamas. No doubt Vince Vaughn and Michelle Monaghan will give great performances in the upcoming series, which is set to stream on Apple TV+.

Bad Monkey Has Added Other New Cast Members

Michelle Monaghan is just one of a couple of new names announced for the series, as a couple of other notable actresses joined the cast of the upcoming Apple TV+ series. Both Jodie Turner-Smith and Meredith Hagner are in the upcoming drama, in the roles of Gracie and Eve, respectively. 

Jodie Turner-Smith’s Gracie possesses an interesting alter ego -- the “Dragon Queen.” On the show, Gracie has a reputation in Andros as someone both respected and feared for her skills as a practitioner of Obeah. This is a spiritual practice in which people can use supernatural abilities to communicate with entities and spirits in an effort to harm other living people. It certainly explains why Turner-Smith’s character would be an intimidating force in the town, and she sounds like a character that will be interesting to watch when the show comes out. 

As for Meredith Hagner’s Eve, she’s a widow who's questioned by Yancy, and the detective apparently suspects that she knows more than she lets on. And given this series features a severed arm, and yes, a monkey, I feel his instincts may be correct. 

This definitely sounds like a series TV fans will appreciate, so I can only hope the final product is as promising as these castings and character descriptions. Because Apple TV+ has a solid track record thus far with shows like Ted Lasso and The Morning Show, one can only hope that Bill Lawrence's newest project can live up to those standards. There's no telling when we might get our first official look at the show so, at this point, interested parties will be playing the waiting game.

It’s hard to remember a time when Vince Vaugh and Owen Wilson weren’t a great comedy duo, or when Rachel McAdams, Bradley Cooper and Isla Fisher weren’t recognizable stars, but that was the case before 2005’s Wedding Crashers. Movie fans quickly grew to love the comedy, and as cast members recall many behind-the-scenes stories you can tell they have a strong love for it as well.

This is why rumors and anticipation persist about a long-awaited sequel for Wedding Crashers. An August report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Wedding Crashers 2 was listed among active projects by the Georgia Film Office, but we may have to pump the brakes. While there does appear to be interest among former cast members, Owen Wilson denied reports that they were planning to begin shooting in August to Variety in June.

But while all we can do is speculate about a potential sequel, we’ll always have the original Wedding Crashers. Here’s some fun behind-the-scenes facts you may not have known about the classic comedy.

Producer Andrew Panay Conceived The Idea From His Own Wedding Crasher Experience

Usually what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but not if what happens inspires a great comedy. In retrospectives for Wedding Crashers’ 15th anniversary in 2020, producer Andrew Panay told Variety and Mel Magazine how his own experiences put the idea of Wedding Crashers in his head.

While in Vegas with a friend, Panay said on their way to the pool they ended up in a wedding reception just for a few minutes, but the fun experience stuck with him. Add in the excitement that he , and Panay thought there was a movie there.

Eventually, he teamed up with screenwriters Steve Faber and Bob Fisher to write a script, with the duo adding some of their own experiences crashing lobbyist events when they were D.C. interns.

Isla Fisher Gave One Of The Wildest Auditions Ever

One of the three breakout stars of Wedding Crashers along with Cooper and McAdams, Isla Fisher’s biggest credits prior to 2005 were Shaggy’s love interest in Scooby-Doo and a supporting role in David O. Russell’s I Heart Huckabees. So unsurprisingly, she needed to audition for her role as Gloria Cleary.

Fisher recalled to Mel Magazine that many well-known actresses were also up for the role of Gloria, including Shannon Elizabeth and Anna Paquin. She made sure that she stood out among the competition though.

In the mentioned Mel Magazine article, casting director Lisa Beach said:

Needless to say, she got the part, and we've been able to enjoy Isla Fisher movies ever since.

Gene Hackman, Tommy Lee Jones Were Considered For Sec. Cleary Role

Christopher Walken memorably plays the patriarch of the Cleary family in Wedding Crashers, Secretary of the Treasury William Cleary. But there were a handful of other big name actors that director David Dobkin was considering for the role.

Dobkin explained to Variety that he wanted an actor in the role of Sec. Cleary that would be intimidating to Vaugh and Wilson’s characters without ever having to actually threaten them. Options he considered were Gene Hackman, Tommy Lee Jones and, according to a conversation with The Ringer, Burt Reynolds.

Walken was Dobkins' clear number one choice though, and he reached out to him first. The Oscar-winning actor accepted.

Jane Seymour Worried About What Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman Fans Would Think Of Her Role

The other half of the Cleary parents is played by Jane Seymour in the film. In the early 2000s, Seymour’s most recent claim to fame was her role on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, for which she had been nominated for two Primetime Emmys. When she first read the script for Wedding Crashers, she was immediately worried about what fans of Dr. Quinn would think of her in the film.

Speaking at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2015:

However, Seymour still had to audition for the role, something that she had rarely done in her career. But it was during her audition that she found one of her character’s most iconic moments. Seymour revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the hiss that she adds when she tells Wilson’s character to call her Kitty Cat was an in-the-moment decision and what she credits for landing her the role.

The Opening Wedding Crashing Montage Took A Week To Film

Wedding Crashers starts off with an extended montage of Vaughn and Wilson’s characters having the time of their lives at a series of weddings they crash. It’s a fantastic sequence that gets the energy of the movie rolling right off the bat. David Dobkin knew how important the montage would be for the film and devoted a lot of time to filming it.

The shooting of the montage scenes was the first thing that was shot during production, and would be the only thing they would shoot for a week for a scene that was just one page worth of script. As Dobkin told Entertainment Weekly, everyone wondered why they spent so long on the sequence, including Vaughn, but he says they used just about everything they shot to make the most of the montage.

One way that they did make things a bit easier for the sequence’s production was creating multiple weddings on a single set. Shooting in a conference room, Dobkin said that they would do one side up as an Indian wedding reception and the other as a Jewish wedding reception. This strategy was used with "about half a dozen rooms" to film the receptions.

Vince Vaughn And Owen Wilson Came Up With Most Of The Wedding Crashers Rules

Among the more memorable parts of Wedding Crashers is the list of rules Vaughn and Wilson’s characters cite throughout the film (I’ll cop to having a poster of the rules in my dorm room). However, these rules were not passed down by Chazz Reinhold or even the screenwriters.

In the 15th anniversary retrospectives in Variety and Mel Magazine, Dobkin, Vaughn and Wilson all say they actively worked together to get the script, written by Steve Faber and Bob Fishers, into its final form. In a separate interview with IGN, the two stars revealed that included most of the rules for crashing weddings.

According to the stars, there were only about two rules mentioned in the original script, but whenever they would work on a scene with some improvisation they would often create new rules to go along with their rants.

As far as abiding by the rules, Wilson says he always tries to stick to rule no. 17 when he’s at a wedding: “Blend in by sticking out.”

Dobkin And His Editors Referred To NFL Broadcasts For Editing The Football Scene

Despite the audibles called by Vaughn’s Jeremy and the intensity that Bradley Cooper’s Sack brings to the game, the touch football sequence is far from an NFL game, but that didn’t stop Dobkin and his editors from treating it like one.

In an examination of the scene by The Ringer, Dobkin explained that when he was a film student at New York University a professor told him if you want to see how to edit a great scene, watch the NFL. The professor believed there were few better at knowing when to insert a cut and what emotion to go for in a particular moment.

Dobkin took the lesson and applied it almost literally for the touch football game. He said:

Chazz Reinhold Was Not Originally In The Script

Another instance of Dobkin, Vaughn and Wilson's collaboration paid off with one of the best movie cameos ever.

Chazz Reinhold, the man who invented the rules of wedding crashing, is mentioned in an early scene, but in the original script his character does not appear. As told to Entertainment Weekly, Wilson thought it would be funny if at some point they crash a funeral, then Dobkin thought it could be a perfect opportunity to introduce the Chazz character in the flesh while Wilson’s John is at rock bottom. Wilson ran with it and wrote the scene.

Filming the scene was a bit more difficult. Everyone wanted to have Will Ferrell play the part, but up until midnight before they shot the scene, according to Dobkin, they still were trying to get a commitment from Ferrell (Nicolas Cage was plan B). The former Saturday Night Live star did ultimately arrive on set to play the role, but they only had him for one day. It was a rapid process, but it turned into comedy gold.

Wedding Crashers Shut Down D.C.’s Constitution Ave. During Rush Hour For Final Shots

As John and Jeremy ride off with Claire and Gloria, Dobkin and crew were able to pull off an incredible shot of the Washington Monument as the final image that both symbolizes a point of growth for the characters from earlier in the film when they watched the sunrise over the monument and as well as a bit of immature humor with a phallic-looking building. It’s a great shot, but required a lot of logistics to make it work.

Dobkin told The USA Today that they had more than 40 cop cars on set that day to shut down traffic along Constitution Ave. in D.C. during rush hour (as a D.C.-area native, I can assure you this certainly caused a lot of headaches for the production and daily commuters). Dobkin called it a total mess as they worked to get in four takes of the final shot.

Wedding Crashers Was The First R-Rated Comedy To Break $200M At The Domestic Box-Office

Nowadays it seems like every big comedy is R-rated. But before films like The Hangover, Deadpool or Judd Apatow’s biggest films made bank at the box-office, R-rate comedies weren’t guaranteed successes. In fact, Wedding Crashers was the first R-rated straight comedy to crack $200 million at the U.S. box-office (action-comedy Beverly Hills Cop did gross $234 million).

Wedding Crashers would hold that top spot for highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all-time for just four years until The Hangover topped it in 2009, per IMDb’s Box Office Mojo.

We may be getting a Wedding Crashers sequel in the future, but until then you can watch the original Wedding Crashers for free via the Peacock streaming service, or with subscriptions to Hulu or HBO Max.

In a world filled with amazing comedy movies, there is one I’ve always thought of as one of the most iconic, and that is Swingers. While the cast for the comedy isn’t as big as some of the other intense ensembles that we have seen for other comedies, it’s still just as star-studded.

Big names like Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn, and several others appeared in Swingers, and went on to have eventful careers with plenty of awesome hits. If you’ve been wondering where the Swingers cast has gone after their success, look no further than here.

Jon Favreau (Mike Peters)

Jon Favreau, who played the main character, Mike Peters, in Swingers, has had quite the career since the release of the film. Favreau actually wrote Swingers, but has since gone on to star in several films - as well as direct, write, and create new TV shows.

In terms of acting, Jon Favreau has appeared in several different types of films. One of his biggest roles has been playing Happy Hogan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a role that he had as early as Iron Man (which he also directed), and has continued for more than a decade. Other acting roles include the disaster film, Deep Impact, the comedy The Break-Up, the hilarious Christmas film, Four Christmases, the Leonardo DiCpario-led The Wolf of Wall Street, and Chef, a film directed and written by Favreau as well.

In terms of directing or writing, Favreau has been nonstop. There are plenty of Jon Favreau movies and TV shows. He directed the Christmas film, Elf, the space adventure Zathura, and directed two Disney live-action films, The Jungle Book and The Lion King, among others. One of his biggest projects thus far has been creating the Disney+ original series, The Mandalorian, which is going into its third season in 2022. He is also working on a spinoff show, titled The Book of Boba Fett, that will be premiering later this year.

Truly, there is no stopping Favreau, and I can’t wait to see what he does next.

Vince Vaughn (Trent Walker)

Another big name from Swingers, Vince Vaughn played Trent Walker in the film and has been busy with other acting projects since then.

In terms of film, there are so many Vince Vaughn movies, most of which have been comedies. This includes Old School, Wedding Crashers, The Break-Up (alongside Favreau), Four Christmasses (again, alongside Favreau), Fred Claus, The Internship, The Dilemma, and many others. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t have great dramatic roles as well, including a part in Return to Paradise, the remake of the psychological thriller, Psycho, Hacksaw Ridge, Dragged Across Concrete, Fighting with my Family and more.

On television, Vaughn has appeared in several miniseries and television series, such as Season 2 of True Detective on HBO, F is for Family, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and many others. Coming up, he’s going to be in the comedy, Queenpins, so keep an eye out for him popping up in theaters.

Ron Livingston (Rob)

Moving on, Rob in Swingers was played by Ron Livingston, and he’s appeared in several films and TV series’. Some of these movies include Office Space, Little Black Book, The Time Traveler’s Wife, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, had a part in The Conjuring the first film in The Conjuring universe, the comedy Vacation, and many others.

With TV, Ron Livingston has had a successful career appearing in plenty of shows. Livingston was in the main cast of the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, had a recurring role on The Practice, and appeared in several episodes on the popular drama/comedy, Sex and the City. He also appeared on Standoff and Defying Gravity, and had a major recurring part on Boardwalk Empire. Livingston starred in Loudermilk, and currently stars as Jon Dixon in a recurring appearance on the ABC drama, A Million Little Things.

Coming up, he’ll be appearing in The Flash film as Henry Allen, and an upcoming film called Pep. He will also have a role in the Pantheon TV series, voicing Waxman, so it looks like the next couple of years are going to be filled with some awesome projects from the talented actor.

Patrick Van Horn (Sue)

Among the group of friends who hang out and hit the town with Mike and Trent is Sue, played by Patrick Van Horn. Since Swingers, Horn appeared in comedic films until 2008. This includes Three to Tango, Free Enterprise, and Four Christmases alongside both Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn again.

It doesn’t seem that Patrick Van Horn has done anything in film or television in recent years, but at the very least, we can watch some of his older performances.

Alex Désert (Charles)

Alex Désert played Charles in Swingers, and has had a busy career since his portrayal in the film. In terms of movies, Désert appeared in the romantic comedy film, High Fidelity, the Steve Carell-led Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, and more.

He’s also appeared in several TV shows, including the 1990s version of The Flash, the coming of age series, Boy Meets World, the sitcom, Becker, voiced several characters in The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, The LeBrons, Better Things, Sing It! And many more. He’s also taken up voicing Carl Carlson and Lou in The Simpsons, replacing Hank Azeria.

Coming up, Désert has multiple things lined up, including TV shows Women of the Movement, A League of Their Own, and The Breakup Diet. He will also be appearing in the films Bolivar, and Everything I Ever Wanted to Tell My Daughter About Men, so he’s going to have a fun couple of years filled with plenty of awesome things to look forward to.

Heather Graham (Lorraine)

Heather Graham appeared as Lorraine in Swingers, and has gone on to have a great career in both television and film. Graham appeared in the comedy-drama, Boogie Nights, Lost in Space, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and several others. She's also among the memorable cast of The Hangover movies.

Graham has also appeared in a number of television shows and movies, including the thriller/drama, Flowers in the Attic, Scrubs, Emily’s Reasons Why Not, a recurring appearance in Californication, Flaked, Angie Tribeca, and Bliss, among many others. She also guest starred in the miniseries, The Stand, and played a part in the recent television film, Love, Guaranteed.

In the next couple of years, she’ll be appearing in a few films, including Oracle, On a Win and a Prayer, and Chosen Family, so keep an eye out for this one soon enough to appear in film.

Brooke Langton (Nikki)

In Swingers, Brooke Langton played Nikki, and since her performance, she’s appeared in many films and TV shows. On the big screen, she’s popped up in Playing Mona Lisa, The Replacements, Beautiful Dreamer, Chilly Christmas, Saving Christmas, and more.

With television, Langton has been a series regular on several TV shows, including the adventure drama, Extreme, the primetime soap opera, Melrose Place, the drama, The Net, the crime drama, Life, and many others. She’s also guest-starred on several shows, like The Good Cop, Bones, The Mentalist, Weeds, and more. She also had a recurring role on the action drama series, The Last Ship.

Even if the cast is small, they’ve done so much since their appearance in this hilarious comedy. And I can’t wait to see what the rest of them do next, whether that be comedy, drama, or anything in-between. Now, if you don’t mind me, I’m going to watch The Mandalorian again before Season 3.

This February marked the 18th anniversary of Old School, Todd Phillips' back-to-school sophomoric comedy that propelled the film careers of its three lead stars, Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Will Ferrell. Luke Wilson (Mitch “The Godfather” Martin)

As Mitch Martin, i.e. "The Godfather," a lovelorn 30-something who moves into Beanie's frat house after his girlfriend cheats on him, Luke Wilson plays our hapless lead character in Old School. Most notably, Wilson played Anthony Adams in Bottle Rocket, Richie Tenenbaum in The Royal Tenenbaums, and Emmett Richmond in the Legally Blonde movies. Additionally, he starred in Home Fries, The Family Stone, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, and Idiocracy. Most recently, Will Ferrell starred in Downhill and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, which he co-wrote and produced. Playing the part of Bernard "Beanie" Campbell, who turns his house into a fraternity to stay compliant with the university rules, Vince Vaughn starred in Old School. Following his breakout performance as Trent Walker in Swingers, Vaughn found fame with his lead performances in Wedding Crashers, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and The Break-Up. As Dean Gordon Pritchard, i.e. "Cheese," an old classmate who's out for revenge, Jeremy Piven plays the primary antagonist in Old School. Most notably, Piven is known for his three-time Emmy-winning performance as Ari Gold in HBO's Entourage. Later, the actor reprised this role in the 2015 big screen continuation. His other notable television roles include Mr. Selfridge, Ellen, The Larry Sanders Show, and Seinfeld.

Additionally, on the big screen, Jeremy Piven played the lead role of Don Ready in The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard. He also starred in Keeping Up with the Steins, PCU, and I Melt With You. In October 2020, we saw Vince Vaughn like we never saw him before in Freaky, the cheekily clever genre mash-up of Freaky Friday and Friday the 13th that allowed the comedy superstar to get in touch with his feminine side. Not only was it different than anything we've seen the actor do in the past, but it might very well be one of his best performances. It's also another sign that Vaughn is stretching his skills as an actor.

While he's often typecast into playing motormouthed hustlers who try to talk their way in or out of anything (and seemingly everything), Vince Vaughn has proven his talents to be more varied than some give him credit. Of late, he's been playing a variety of characters in films like Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Arkansas that showcase an actor willing to extend his reach. It's hard to know if this is just an adventurous period for the actor or if this is the new norm for Vaughn, but he has some new movies and shows on the horizon, both comedic and otherwise, that should showcase his displayed range.

North Hollywood - TBA 2021 (Post-Production)

With a logline that amusingly calls itself "the first-ever movie about becoming a pro skater," North Hollywood is — right from the get-go — introducing itself as a winking, light-hearted, self-aware coming-of-age story. Written and directed by Mikey Alfred, who produced Jonah Hill's Mid90s, North Hollywood has a cast filled with newcomers and famous faces alike, including Nico Hiraga (Moxie), Miranda Cosgrove, Blake Anderson, and Vince Vaughn. Details remain limited otherwise, but the movie made its premiere in late March, which means that it should be out later in 2021. Especially since it comes from producer Pharrell Williams, it's only a matter of time before it finds a distributor.

Certainly, the trailer for North Hollywood has a tone reminiscent of the aforementioned Mid90s, which should make it appealing to movie lovers who enjoyed Jonah Hill's impressive first outing as a writer-director. Admittedly, coming-of-age movies based in sunny LA are a dime a dozen these days, but North Hollywood will hopefully make a good impression — especially with its high-profile cast.

Queenpins - TBA 2021 (Post-Production)

Inspired by the true story of what's considered the largest coupon counterfeit scam in U.S. history (if there's any competition in that field), as Variety reported, Queenpins sounds like an entertaining mix of true crime and suburban drama with a dash of dark comedy, which should hopefully result in a fun and inspired twist on this (otherwise familiar) type of rise-and-fall domestic crime story,

Starring Kristen Bell as a fed-up housewife who took control in her life by starting an illegal coupon club, which resulted in $40 million in scams from big food companies, this STX Film title has a strong supporting cast, including Vince Vaughn, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Paul Walter Hauser, Joel McHale, Paul Rust, and Nick Cassavetes, which should keep it exciting. From writing-directing partners Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly, Queenpins is currently in post-production and it's expected to come out later in 2021. We should expect to hear more about this intriguing new dramedy in the months ahead.

The Last Drop - TBA (Pre-Production)

Paired alongside Catastrophe's Sharon Horgan, The Last Drop could be an interesting role for Vince Vaughn, particularly as the actor continues to flex his comedic and dramatic range. In this upcoming film, the actor will play Clay Mason, a charming, hard-partying culinary show host who reaches a tipping point in his life and career. Due to his carefree lifestyle, his career starts to unwind. During a turbulent period, Clay crosses paths with Holly (Horgan), a spirited antique dealer who sees through Clay's bon vivant personality and helps him find the strength he needs to bring his life out of a tailspin.

A character-driven romantic dramedy that's set to be produced by Shawn Levy and Dan Levine (Arrival), directed by Christopher Storer (Remy), and written by Brandon Murphy, Phillip Murphy, and Elizabeth Chomko (What They Had), The Last Drop will require a specific performance from Vaughn, and the producers believe the experimenting actor has the goods to pull it off, especially at this point in his career.

As the producers said in a joint statement (via Variety), The Last Drop requires a lead actor who can bring a "nuanced performance" as someone who is "both incredibly charming and seriously flawed." Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen note that Vince Vaughn can "be exceptionally funny while at the same time highly affecting," which makes him "perfectly cast" in this role. Only time will tell regarding Vaughn's performance, but it sounds like the type of character that plays to his charm and his understated dramatic talents. But when we'll get a chance to see it remains uncertain.

The last updates for The Last Drop were in 2019, so it might have stalled. If it comes together, though, this new movie could be a promising new step for the Swingers star.

Untitled Netflix Action-Adventure Movie - TBA (Announced)

Written by Workaholics' Anders Holm, this new project, which will apparently be a cross between City Slickers and Old School, is still being kept under wraps, but if it's as action-intensive as Deadline suggests, it could be another opportunity for Vaughn to expand his genre reach and demonstrate his hard-working talents. It should be noted, though, that this developing project was first announced in 2019, and there haven't been any updates since 2019.

In recent years, Vince Vaughn has only continued to branch out of his comfortable comedy zone and explored his (admittedly undervalued) range as an actor. Notably with his lead roles in the action-crime dramas like Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete, his villainous turns in Arkansas and True Detective Season 3, and his dramatic supporting performance in Seberg, Vaughn has experimented with his darker side and pushed away from the conventional comedies that defined his career.

For the actor's fans, it's intriguing to see the performer stretch himself and expand his depths as a star, particularly as his physicality is also explored in different projects, notably last year's Freaky. So, when it comes to his involvement in Netflix's upcoming action-adventure (which is currently untitled), it'll be interesting to see if this is a return to the type of fast-talking roles that defined Vaughn's career or another intriguing detour.

One can presume that Netflix's upcoming action-adventure ensemble comedy will be closer to what fans expect from Vince Vaughn as a movie star. With that said, it'll be interesting to see how the actor's recent changes shape this upcoming performance. It could also showcase another new direction in Vaughn's career.

Wedding Crashers 2? - TBA (Speculated)

15 years ago, Wedding Crashers sneaked its way into theaters and became a massive hit for everyone involved, especially Vince Vaughn. Following its buzzy release, the R-rated raunchy buddy comedy became one of the most well-known titles on Vaughn's varied resume. Paired alongside Owen Wilson, who bounced well off Vaughn's rambunctious verbal energy, the two leading men spawned one of the most quoted comedies of the mid-'00s, which begs the question, "When are we getting a sequel?"

Especially now when decades-later continuations (comedy or otherwise) are becoming fashionable, one has to wonder if Wedding Crashers 2 is the next sequel made twenty years later (if you can believe it). It hasn't been greenlighted (yet), but years back, Isla Fisher claimed that she has discussed a possible Wedding Crashers 2 with Vince Vaughn.

In 2016, during the promotional circuits for Nocturnal Animals, Isla Fisher said that Vince Vaughn bumped into her at a party and told her that Wedding Crashers 2 was happening. Granted, that's far from official, and Vaughn was speaking informally, but it confirms one thing: sequel talk was, at some point, happening— if not under the most serious circumstances. Admittedly, in today's different comedy era, it's hard to know how Wedding Crashers 2 would fly, which might explain why this project hasn't picked up traction. That said, Vaughn provided an update in 2020 that should get fans excited.

During the press rounds for Freaky, Vaughn confessed that director David Dobkin has "a really good" and "contemporary" idea for this possible sequel. The actor admits that he didn't make follow-ups to his past successful comedies because he didn't want to chase their success, but he believes there's potential in bringing back these beloved characters. Of course, only time will tell. Would it be more sad or funny (or even disturbing) to see these party-loving characters up to their old tricks after two decades?

Producing: Oaklandia - TBA (Announced)

In addition to his upcoming acting credits, Vince Vaughn is a producer on Oaklandia, an adult animated comedy from voice actor/executive producer Snoop Dogg. In development at Amazon, the pilot is written by Daniel Dominguez (Gen: Lock) and Chris "Comedian CP" Powell (Ole Bud's Anu Football Weekly), but not much else is known otherwise. The project was announced in November 2020, as Deadline reported, so we'll have to keep on the lookout. Right now, it's unclear if Vaughn is solely producing or if he'll lend his voice to the project as well, as he did with Netflix's F is for Family, but if Oaklandia is being fast-tracked, we should have a better idea of what's in store soon.

Additionally, it's worth noting that Vince Vaughn is currently attached to produce the action-thriller The Risk Agent and the comedy The Insane Laws, but neither has seen any updates since 2017. One can reasonably assume, therefore, that they're currently not in active development. But never say never in Tinseltown. In the role of Millie Kessler, a demure high school student who switches bodies with a vengeful serial killer known as "The Blissfield Butcher," Kathryn Newton played one-half of our dual leads in Freaky. Most notably, Kathryn Newton starred in HBO's Big Little Lies and Netflix's The Society. Additionally, the actress had one of the main parts in CBS' Gary Unmarried, and she was a lead in Paranormal Activity 4, which was also written by Freaky's Christopher Landon. Some of her other film credits include Detective Pikachu, Blockers, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Bad Teacher, Lady Bird, and Ben is Back.

Furthermore, Kathryn Newton played prominent parts in Supernatural and Halt and Catch Fire. She can also be seen in All My Children, Mad Men, Dog with a Blog, and the BBC's Little Women 2017 mini-series. Plus, Newton appears in the music video for Post Malone's "Goodbyes," ft. Young Thug. Next, the actress will star in the fantasy film, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things.

Vince Vaughn (Blissfield Butcher/Millie Kessler)

Playing the part of the Blissfield Butcher, an imposing middle-aged serial killer who finds his body possessed by Millie Kessler's spirit, Vince Vaughn got in touch with his feminine side through his transformative performance in Freaky. Following a handful of supporting performances in the early 1990s, including Rudy, Vaughn became a star thanks to Swingers, a role written for him by co-star Jon Favreau.

Shortly after Swingers' success, he appeared in The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Clay Pigeons, Psycho (1998), The Cell, Made, Anchorman, Starsky & Hutch, and Old School. Additionally, Vince Vaughn frontlined Wedding Crashers, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Four Christmases, Fred Claus, The Dilemma, The Watch, Delivery Man, and Unfinished Business, and he starred in, co-wrote, and produced The Break-Up, Couples Retreat, and The Internship. Also, Vaughn provided standout supporting turns in Into the Wild, Hacksaw Ridge, Be Cool, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Recently, Vince Vaughn has pushed himself into darker and more dramatic territory, departing his familiar comedic roles with Brawl in Cell Block 99, Dragged Across Concrete, Term Life, Seberg, Arkansas, and the second season of HBO's True Detective. Vaughn also starred in Fighting with My Family and Hulu's The Binge. And the actor did voice work for Netflix's F is for Family and played a recurring role in the latest season of HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm. Currently, Vaughn is filming Queenpins.

Celeste O’Connor (Nyla Chones)

As Nyla Chones, one of Millie's closest BFFs, Celeste O'Connor plays a caring character in Freaky. Prior to this performance, O'Connor gained notice for her standout work in Amazon Prime's Selah and the Spades, which premiered on the service earlier this year. She was also seen in Netflix's Irreplaceable You — her screen debut — and last year's Wetlands. Next, O'Connor stars in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Misha Osherovich (Joshua Detmer)

In the role of Joshua Detmer, another one of Millie's best friends, Misha Osherovich played a scene-stealing supporting character in Freaky. Outside of this role, they notably starred in last year's The Goldfinch and they had a recurring role in AMC's NOS4A2. Additionally, Osherovich can also be seen in several episodes of the web series, History. The actor starred in 2017's The Prey, as well as short films like Never Born and E.very D.ay, the latter of which they also wrote and co-produced.

Katie Finneran (Coral Kessler)

Playing the part of Coral Kessler, the alcoholic widower mom of Millie and Char, Katie Finneran has a prominent (if also absentee) role in Freaky. Best known for her Tony-winning Broadway performances in Noises Off in 2002 and Promises, Promises in 2010, respectively, Finneran has a variety of film credits to her name, including 1990's Night of the Living Dead, You've Got Mail, Liberty Heights, Bewitched, Firehouse Dog, and Broken Bridges, as well as Baby on Board, Death to Smoochy, Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous, and Movie 43.

Outside of film, Katie Finneran also appeared in several shows, including Wonderfalls, The Michael J. Fox Show, Bloodline, The Looming Tower, Why Women Kill, and Brockmire, which she starred in as recently as this year. Additionally, Finneran made guest star appearances in The Good Fight, Murphy Brown, Blindspot, Elementary, Damages, Royal Pains, Oz, Sex and the City, Frasier, All My Children, and Super Force. She was also seen in several episodes of The Insider, Bram and Alice, and I Hate My Teenage Daughter.

Dana Drori (Charlene “Char” Kessler)

As Charlene Kessler, i.e. "Char," a local police officer and Millie's older sister, Dana Drori played a supporting (and supportive) character in Freaky. While this role is likely her best known, the actress can also be seen in Straight Up, Inside Game, The Price, and Rebel in the Rye. Additionally, Drori appeared in shows like The Affair, Taken, High Fidelity, The Tap, Expecto Patron, Model Woman, and, most recently, Into the Dark. Outside of acting, she was involved in the costume and wardrobe department in last year's short film, Dom.

Uriah Shelton (Booker Strode)

In the role of Booker Strode, a fellow Blissfield Valley High School student and Millie's crush, Uriah Shelton played a romantic character in Freaky. Primarily known for his television work, Shelton starred in A&E's The Glades and played one of the main parts in the web series, Blue. Additionally, he had recurring roles in Girl Meets World, 13 Reasons Why, and Hulu's limited series, Looking for Alaska. He also made guest appearances on Monk, Without a Trace, Ghost Whisperer, R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour, NCIS: Los Angeles, Instant Mom, The Romanoffs, Last Man Standing, Franklin & Bash, and Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight. Additionally, Shelton can be seen in TV movies like Ring of Death and The Nanny Express.

Outside of television, Uriah Shelton starred in 2010's Lifted, where he also performed several songs. The young actor also appeared in Lower Learning, Opposite Day, Alabama Moon, and The Warriors Gate.

Melissa Collazo (Ryler)

Playing the part of Ryler, a stone-cold bully who meets an icy end, Melissa Collazo plays a short-lived character in Freaky. Most notably, Collazo appeared in several episodes of Stranger Things, as well as a couple episodes of DC Universe's short-lived Swamp Thing. Her other film credits include 2018's The Little Mermaid and an uncredited role in Netflix's Naked. Next, Collazo plays one of the titular characters in Lena and Snowball. She's also set to star in Peacock's upcoming mystery series, One of Us is Lying.

Alan Ruck (Mr. Fletcher)

As Mr. Fletcher, an uncaring woodshop teacher who's particularly resentful towards Millie, Alan Ruck plays one of the key adult characters in the first half of Freaky. Ruck's involvement in this high school-based horror-comedy is a fun nod to his past, as he's primarily known for playing Cameron Frye in John Hughes' Ferris Bueller's Day Off. His other notable roles were found in Spin City, Speed, Twister, 1983's Bad Boys, Young Guns II, and Three Fugitives. Ruck also appears in Cheaper by the Dozen (2003), Star Trek Generations, The Happening, Kickin' It Old School, Ghost Town, I Love You Beth Cooper, War Machine, Gringo, Extraordinary Measures, and Class, as well as Born to Be Wild, Goats, Carnage Park, Sierra Burgess is a Loser, and 2019's Captive State.

Currently, Alan Ruck plays one of the leads in HBO's multi-Emmy-winning dramedy series, Succession. Some of the actor's other television credits include Going Places, The Edge, Greek, Persons Unknown, Bunheads, and Mad About You. Additionally, in 2016, Ruck starred in Fox's The Exorcist.

Zack Shires (Tim Turnipseed)

Playing the part of Tim Turnipseed, a high schooler who messes with the wrong person, Zack Shires has a small-but-distinctly-messy role in Freaky. Recently, Shires starred in Netflix's The Devil All The Time. He also appeared in last year's Richard Jewell, as well as Hot Summer Nights and Netflix's Candy Jar. Additionally, Shires can be seen in Adult Swim's viral sensation, Too Many Cooks, as well as an episode of Wilfred. Next, Shires stars in 2021's Breaking News in Yuba County.

One of the rare treats of the year has been Blumhouse’s Freaky, a comedy that had Vince Vaughn play the role of a teen girl in the body of a serial killer next to Kathryn Newton doing vice versa. Vaughn is no stranger to pulling out a bloody knife thanks to his 1998 role as Norman Bates in the Psycho remake. But tapping into the mind of the blonde-haired mascot for Blissfield High was brand new territory for the actor.

Vince Vaughn gets the chance to play the serial killer and pull off some seriously memorable skills in Freaky, but due to the main body-swap event, the heart of his performance lies in playing a scream queen. The Wedding Crashers actor worked with 23-year-old Kathryn Newton on their characters so they could convincingly swap roles. Vaughn talked about his preference to Today with these words:

Vince Vaughn had a blast playing Millie, and it definitely shows. It was a new kind of dynamic for the actor to play around with, and he certainly did. His co-star Misha Oshervich told CinemaBlend that Vaughn was constantly improvising onset. Here’s a sense of what he was like:

On the other hand, Big Little Lies’ Kathryn Newton would happily rather play a serial killer than teen girl because of how complicated she feels it is to play that age. She got to run around with a knife, hook and chainsaw for some hilarious and badass moments in the movie. Freaky hit theaters back in November on Friday the 13, and is gearing up for a digital release this weekend. The unique release is a product of Universal’s deal with AMC Theatres that shortens the usual 90-day theatrical window down to three weeks.

Depending on how Freaky does, the cast and filmmakers have some ideas for a sequel. The movie was written and directed by Chris Landon, who famously made the Happy Death Day movies, which also has hopes to be a trilogy. Could there be a Freaky/Happy Death Day crossover? Back in 2009, Couples Retreat brought together an ensemble of actors to Bora Bora to make the chart-topping comedy. The movie re-teamed Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn for the first time in almost ten years for a film about four couples who vacation together for a therapy retreat. Universal is now being sued regarding the movie’s decision to leave the film’s only Black couple out of international posters to this day, despite alleged internal promises to mend the issue.

Faizon Love issued the lawsuit on Wednesday, with intention to take Universal Studios to the California Superior Court on accusations of fraud, breach of contract and violation of California’s fair employment act and civil rights law. Both Love and Kali Hawk, who played a couple in Couples Retreat alongside the other three couples played by Vince Vaughn, Malin Akerman, Jon Favreau, Kristin Davis, Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, were removed from posters. Love claims this is a whitewashing issue and that the company broke promises made to address it. Below you can see two versions of the Couples Retreat poster:

The most popular version of the Couples Retreat poster found on places such as iTunes or Amazon still uses the poster including Faizon Love and Kali Hawk, but the one (on the right) without them is still reportedly in circulation abroad and is used for bilingual audiences in the US. Love apparently brought up the issue back when the movie came out in 2009 too and was promised it would be removed and that he would receive lucrative career opportunities following the incident. In one clause in the document, Love recalls a moment where Vince Vaughn was brought into the fold with Universal’s President of Marketing at the time, Adam Fogelson. The lawsuit claims that the following happened during a phone conversation:

Since it does not look like Faizon Love and Freaky actor Vince Vaughn worked together following Couples Retreat and the poster was never completely removed from circulation, this is the basis of the actor’s case. Per the lawsuit’s allegations, Vince Vaughn and Fogelson were part of some empty promises to the actor that he believes were leveraged in order to keep him from enacting legal measures. In a statement accompanying the lawsuit Love said this, per Variety:

Rawson Marshall Thurber's Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story is an unconventional sports movie in many ways, and one of the specific ways is how the actors really participated in the action. Films about baseball don't have performers hitting Major League-level fastballs, and football tackles are never as rough as they look, but the Vince Vaughn comedy very much went the extra mile as far as pelting members of the ensemble cast with rubber sports balls.

One of the most memorable moments in the movie in this department is the sequence when the team from Average Joe's Gym has their first training session with Rip Torn's Patches O'Houlihan. Obviously the wrenches that are thrown around in the scene are fake, but the pitch machine used to launch balls was very, very real, and Vince Vaughn recently recounted how the experience was actually pretty scary.

With his new film Freaky now in theaters, Vaughn sat down with GQ for a career retrospective, and while discussing Dodgeball one of the memories he recalled was about that pitch machine. Apparently the director wanted to make the experience as authentic as possible, but that had the effect of putting the star ill at ease. Said Vaughn,

Unfortunately, the timing of Vince Vaughn's complaint wasn't exactly stellar. While he was personally shocked to discover how fast dodgeballs were being launched through the machine, he wasn't actually the first member of the cast to stand in front of it. Vaughn continued,

For what it's worth, while the audience may not be able to pick up the specific speed of the ball as its flying through the air, that extra 30 or 40mph certainly has an impact on the actors' reaction to being hit, and it results in some fantastic physical comedy (Justin Long's sacrifice of his body was particularly worth it, as it is hilarious to watch him just get absolutely crushed by red rubber)

Those of you who are now curious how this knowledge makes the scene play differently are in luck. If you don't already have the movie on Blu-ray or DVD, it's available to rent or buy from digital retailers, and is currently streaming on Cinemax (which you can access directly with an account or cable subscription, or through Hulu or Amazon).

Vince Vaughn has an eclectic body of work, ranging from horror to action thrillers to comedy. While he’s recently been showing up in more serious movies, like Dragged Across Concrete, he’s still widely known for his comedy, such as the newly-released horror romp Freaky. So it’s now pretty hilarious when you hear that the studio was concerned about Vince Vaughn signing on to star in Old School.

Old School, the Todd Philips-directed comedy made waves back in 2003, and it gave Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell’s careers a nice boost. But if DreamWorks Pictures had its way, Vince Vaughn might not have been cast. Vaughn recently told GQ that Todd Phillips had to convince those in charge to keep him on. Here’s what he said:

This actually makes a lot of sense. At the time, Vince Vaughn had become more noticeable for his performances in The Lost World and in horror movies like the Psycho remake and The Cell. You can’t really blame the studio for judging him from his recent work. Fortunately, Todd Phillips knew better.

At the same time, it’s hard to imagine the 1996 comedy Swingers being a reason the studio wouldn't want him to be in the comedy. Sure, Swingers isn't Old School-style comedy, but he still was pretty funny in the movie and showed a lot of charisma. When it was released, Swingers made a big impact on the movie community, even though it was a relatively small film by a couple of unknowns at the time, namely Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau. But once it landed, it put them on the map.

It was Old School, though, that set the comedy course for Vince Vaughn. Afterward, he appeared in more comedies, like Starsky & Hutch, Dodgeball, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Wedding Crashers, and he later re-teamed with Jon Favreau in Couples Retreat. Of those comedies, he’s said Wedding Crashers might get a sequel, as they’re in early talks with a “pretty good” idea.

If I’m being honest though, with Old School hitting its 20th anniversary here soon, I’d say that movie getting a sequel with the whole cast returning would be quite a treat. Plus, now that they’re all older, it would certainly lend itself closer to the name.

With the country still struggling to contain the pandemic, Hollywood has mostly set its release schedule for the rest of 2020, and that's come paired with a certain understanding of what theatrical releases are capable of at the box office. Being the first blockbuster out since March, Christopher Nolan's Tenet created a high water mark in early September, making $20.2 million over an extended holiday weekend, but most big screen features since then have managed to top the charts by pulling in between $3.5-4 million. It was that amount of money that allowed Tim Hill's The War With Grandpa to steal Tenet's crown, and then Mark Williams' Honest Thief arrived a couple weeks later with that same total. November kicked off with Thomas Bezucha’s Let Him Go, which hit the high end of that range, and now we have the arrival of Christopher Landon's Freaky... and you can probably guess how much it made.

Per Box Office Mojo, the body-swap slasher flick is now the new number one movie in North America, and that's because it made $3.7 million in ticket sales since Friday. While major markets like Los Angeles and New York are continuing to keep theaters closed, the horror film opened on 2,472 screens across the continent, and because it also opened in 20 international markets its global haul currently sits at $5.6 million. Because Freaky is a Blumhouse release, it should come as no surprise to anybody that the movie wasn't made with a massive budget (non-sequels typically are usually made for $3-7 million) so there is a legitimate chance that the release will ultimately be profitable for the studio.

The film is Christopher Landon's follow-up to the sci-fi/horror feature Happy Death Day 2U, and stars Kathryn Newton as a high school girl named Millie who winds up accidentally switching bodies with a serial killer (Vince Vaughn). While the teen struggles to convince anybody of her real identity, the psychopath sees all kinds of opportunities to go on a murder spree while in somebody else's body. While our own Sean O'Connell wasn't enamored with it, writing in his review that it doesn't do enough with its high-concept premise, most critics have given it a thumbs up – leading to an 85% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Addressing the release on his personal social media page, the Freaky writer/director acknowledged that there are a lot of movie fans who would love to see the film right now, but don't feel safe going to theaters – however, he also feels an obligation to help an industry that is most definitely struggling right now:

Christopher Landon also added that those of you who are really excited to see Freaky on VOD won't have to wait long, as it will be available in just a couple weeks:

It's worth noting that Freaky is a Universal film, and this particular distribution plan lines up with a deal that was made between them and AMC Theaters earlier in the year. Following a conflict that started in late March due to the PVOD release of Walt Dohrn's Trolls World Tour, Universal and the theater chain struck a deal in late July allows the studio to release their movies digitally without issue so long as they play on the big screen for 17 days first. To save you having to do the math, this means that the body swap slasher will be online starting December 1. (Universal is also pulling a similar move with Joel Crawford's upcoming The Croods: A New Age, which will be out on November 25 and online just in time for Christmas.)

Blumhouse’s latest film Freaky is a rare laugh-out-loud horror film. Vince Vaughn stars as a serial killer called the Blissfield Butcher, who becomes stuck in the body of a teen girl Millie, whereas the high schooler, played by Big Little Lies’ Kathryn Newton, finds herself living in the body of the 6’5 Wedding Crashers actor. It’s the perfect set up for the actors to have fun with, and they took complete advantage of this on set.

While Millie is trapped in the body of the Butcher, she hangs around the high school as a man with her friends Josh and Nyla, played by breakouts Misha Osherovich and Celeste O’Connor. With them, she discovers what it’s like to be in a man’s body – something that Vaughn ran with on set. When CinemaBlend spoke to Misha Osherovich, the actor recalled one funny scene that Vince Vaughn made up on the spot. In their words:

Freaky offers a ton of opportunities for Vince Vaughn to play around with the wacky situation his character finds herself in, one being a hilarious moment in the high school bathroom alone with the Blissfield Butcher’s manhood. Newcomers Misha Osherovich and Celeste O’Connor ended up just listening in silence as the master worked. And apparently both Vaughn and Kathryn Newton really married to the body swap bit on set. Osherovich also said this in our interview with these words:

Kathryn Newton steals the show just as much as Vince Vaughn does as a stone cold serial killer left with his murderous tendencies in a high school full of people who bully Millie on the daily. As Misha Osherovich told us, not breaking wasn’t too hard because of how committed the pair were to embodying each other right down to their walks and little ticks.

Freaky is co-writer/director Christopher Landon’s followup to the Happy Death Day movies, another horror comedy franchise we hope to see continue with future films. You might not expect a horror film where Vince Vaughn plays a serial killer known as the Blissfield Butcher to make relevant social commentary on bullying. But because Christopher Landon’s Freaky is also a body-swap film that switches the killer with a teenager girl (Kathryn Newton), the script is able to comment numerous times on the archaic practice of bullying, and its prevalence in contemporary high school.

For his part, Vince Vaughn is thrilled that Freaky is tackling his issue. The Old School and Dodgeball star stopped by our ReelBlend podcast to break down his role in Freaky, and opened up about the themes that he saw in the project, and why they were important to him. Vaughn told us:

Before the body swap takes place, Kathryn Newton plays Millie as a bookish, quiet and reserved teenager who is the school mascot because it allows her to hide in the costume of a massive beaver. But once the Butcher takes over her body, Freaky gives Millie the strength to push back against the people who are doing her wrong. Vince Vaughn didn’t say that he was bullied growing up, but he spoke on the topic and really connected with the ways that bullying can make one feel like less than the norm. Vaughn said:

While many movie theaters are still closed around the country, either by state mandate or by choice due to the lack of business, that's not stopping a few films from being released in what feels, in the age of COVID-19, like "the old fashioned way." However, based on reviews it's possible that Vince Vaughn's new horror-comedy Freaky might be worth going out to your local theater, assuming that's an option, as the movie is receiving fairly universal support.

I say "fairly" universal support, because, as is almost always the case, while critics generally fall on one side or the other of any given movie, there will always be those who go the other way. While most seem to appreciate Freaky quite a lot, CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell was lukewarm at best on the movie. He gave the film 2.5 stars and in our official review said that while the premise of the movie was solid, in the end, what Freaky does with that premise is far less creative...

The body-swap story is pretty much universally played for laughs, and we've seen more than our share of those movies over the years. But Freaky adds something to the mix by adding a horror element, specifically by making one of the pair of main characters a serial killer. It certainly has the potential to make something that feels very new. Although, as Vulture points out, the horror-comedy is still more comedy than horror, though that isn't necessarily a bad thing...

Freaky sees Vince Vaughn's serial killer swap bodies with Kathryn Newton's high school student, which means that in addition to seeing a body swap that includes a killer, we're seeing one that swaps both age, gender, and size, which opens up all sorts of comedy avenues, and that seems to work well for most critics. Variety says that Vince Vaughn ultimately works better in this horror-comedy than he does in her previous attempts at straight horror...

And while many may be of the opinion that Freaky works best as a comedy first, some critics, like ScreenRant, don't fault the film's horror either...

Freaky looks like a pretty solid movie, which is sort of frustrating, because even if the movie does well, it will almost certainly not do as well as it would have under normal circumstances. Still, if you're willing and able to hit the theater right now, it looks like Freaky might be just the movie you're looking for.

Unless you were around as it was happening, it’s easy to overlook just how massive Swingers was when it dropped in 1996. No one knew, at the time, who Jon Favreau or Vince Vaughn were. But all of a sudden, movie buffs were screaming about going to “Vegas, baby!” and everyone was using “money” as the highest form of compliment. (Example: “You’re so money, baby, and you don’t even know it.”) Swingers tapped into a rising zeitgeist of outsider cool, making overnight sensations out of swing bands and using Cinema Verite to make L.A. nightlife appear to be the thriving dream of an up-and-coming generation.

But Swingers, first and foremost, is a break-up movie. One of the greates break-up movies. Jon Favreau’s character, Mike, is suffering throughout most of the film, despite everything his kind but egotistical buddy Trent (Vaughn) is trying to do to lift him up. We recently had Vaughn on the ReelBlend podcast to chat up his new film Freaky, but had to mention Swingers as the indie darling is on the verge of turning 25. Looking back on what they accomplished, Vince Vaughn had this to say about Swingers, and its impact:

We all remember how Trent handles those beautiful babies. He treats them like a scared little bunny. He doesn’t act like the guy in the PG-13 movie. Trent’s the guy in the rated R movie. Such a classic scene:

But in reflecting on Swingers, Vince Vaughn also realizes that they caught lightning in a bottle with that cast, that script, and the DIY approach that director Doug Liman brought to their filming. They didn’t have a budget. They couldn’t shut down locations. These were newcomer actors playing characters we recognized, and all of that, according to Vince Vaughn, made the movie relatable, and keeps it relevant 25 years later.

He told ReelBlend:

Swingers is one of those movies I’m not surprised we’re still discussing 25 years after the fact. It’s so relatable, and in tune with its audience, I’m quite certain we’ll be talking about it for the next 25 years. Here’s our full ReelBlend conversation with Vince Vaughn:

Body swap stories are almost exclusively played for laughs. The idea of one person having to live out life as another is certainly a natural setup for characters to be confused, make mistakes, and do other things that could lead to laughs. But when you think about it, the idea of being stuck in another person's body is a terrifying concept. It's a bit shocking that there aren't a lot more body swap horror movies like Freaky.

Freaky doesn't forgo the laughs entirely, but it is a body-swap horror-comedy where Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton swap bodies. The biggest issue being that Vaughn's character is a serial killer. While certainly Freaky is meant to be somewhat over the top, Vince Vaughn recently told our own ReelBlend podcast that there's a magic trick the movie uses to get the audience to buy in. According to Vaughn...

No matter what story you're telling, the audience has to be able to buy into the situation. Most movies tell stories that we would never see in reality, but if you can get an audience invested in the characters, then you can usually take your story to even more unbelievable places, and the viewer will follow. Chris Landon, the writer/director of Freaky, has some experience doing that with the Happy Death Day films, and it seems that Freaky is another success in that regard.

The trick, as far as it is one, seems to be the idea of using simple concepts, emotional and vulnerable moments that we all feel from time to time, and to ground the story there. This gives people a place of understanding to hold on to when the rest of the movie, involving body swapping and serial killers, might take the story to places people don't understand. The trick itself isn't necessarily anything most filmmakers don't understand. However, knowing what to do, and actually making it all work are two very different things. Christopher Landon appears to have a very solid grasp on how to make it work.

Vince Vaughn has enjoyed a number of enormous hits over the course of his career, starting off in Rudy and Swingers before breaking bigger for the likes of Steven Spielberg (The Lost World: Jurassic Park) and Gus Van Sant (Psycho). His resume is peppered with comedic classic, but the one thing Vaughn has steered clear of is an easy sequel. Do you know how much money Old School 2 or Dodgeball 2 could have made if studios hurried into production and capitalized on the enormous buzz generated by those hits?

Instead of diving back into a hit premise, Vince Vaughn has made a habit of exploring new ground. He’d follow The Break-Up with an internal drama like Into the Wild, or play against type in heavy dramas such as Hacksaw Ridge, Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete. His latest left-turn is Freaky, a horror comedy that uses the traditional body-swap formula on a serial killer (Vaughn) and a high-school girl (Kathryn Newton).

Joining the ReelBlend podcast this week, Vaughn explained why he has avoided sequels over the course of his career, saying:

What a refreshing response, and one that’s genuinely authentic when you look over Vince Vaughn’s catalogue and realize he really didn’t ever chase the easy success that would come with a sequel. The industry LOVES wringing dollars out of the familiar. And not all sequels are bad. Just this year, Bad Boys for Life and Bill & Ted Face the Music showed that you can revive a dormant franchise so long as you treat the source material with reverence – which sounds like what David Dobkin, Vaughn and Owen Wilson may try to do with Wedding Crashers 2.

For now, though, Vaughn fans can anticipate him flexing yet another creative muscle in Christopher Landon’s Freaky, a Blumhouse horror comedy that slashes its way into select theaters on Friday, November 13. How very appropriate.

So it’s been 15 years since Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson suited up for free open bars and bridesmaid one-night stands in Wedding Crashers. The movie was a huge hit for the pair during the height of the bro comedies, but these characters have not since returned to another venue to continue the ruse. But now, there are finally plans for the cast work together again for a sequel.

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson re-teamed in 2013 for The Internship, but aside from that, they’ve been off on their own making all sorts of other types of movies. Vaughn’s upcoming movie is a body-swap slasher Freaky, hitting theaters next week. While promoting Freaky, the actor shed some light on what’s going on with Wedding Crashers 2. In his words:

That sounds official! Vince Vaughn not only name-dropped his Wedding Crashers partner-in-crime Owen Wilson, but confirmed that the original film’s director, David Dobkin, is on board with an idea for another film. Dobkin recently made Eurovision with Rachel McAdams and Will Ferrell, so there’s definitely potential for more of the Wedding Crashers cast to return as well too. When Vince Vaughn recently spoke to CinemaBlend’s ReelBlend podcast, the actor also said this about the sequel:

This is really exciting. The core team behind the 2005 film look to have a solid concept for the second movie all these years later, and Vince Vaughn specifically is ready to chase after it. At the end of Wedding Crashers, both Vaughn and Wilson’s characters find love in Isla Fisher and Rachel McAdams’ characters, but keep going with the crashing – but just for the free alcohol, food and party this time.

Would they be married to their ladies now? Would they have kids? The movie certainly isn’t old enough for the pair to crash their own kids’ weddings, but there’s a lot of different and funny directions another Wedding Crashers film could go. And here’s hoping the likes of Christopher Walken, Bradley Cooper and Will Ferrell’s Chazz return for the reunion.

As Vince Vaughn pointed out to ReelBlend, he’s never been one to return to his roles for a sequel because it never felt right. So there must be something special about this idea for the actor to break a cardinal rule and get excited about Wedding Crashers 2. Though it is in early stages, so we’ll have to stay tuned.

Blumhouse has been the name in horror since 2000, blasting its stamp on everything from movies and television to short films, documentaries, books and podcasts. The production company isn’t afraid to mix up its approach, either, shifting from high-concept Jordan Peele exercises that are layered with sharp socio-political discourse (Get Out, Us) to franchise pictures that squeeze every drop of blood out of an idea (Paranormal Activity, The Purge). If it sounds scary, Blumhouse probably is interested in trying it, and their results have been far more hit than miss.

Because the Blumhouse label supports so many different projects – they’ve backed nine different films in 2020, with Freaky being their tenth – some feel like they need a bit more workshopping before they are ready to hit the screen, and that’s the case with Christopher Landon’s latest horror-comedy. Freaky sounds like an absolutely victory in the pitch meeting. “It’s Freaky Friday, but this time, a high school girl switches places with a serial killer!” Done. Sold. Go make that movie. And they did… they just didn’t add much beyond the premise, thereby wasting a whole lot of potential.

Freaky Needed To Do More With Its Body-Swap Premise.

To the best of my knowledge, Freaky isn’t the first horror movie to employ the body-swap concept, though it definitely is the most mainstream horror project to apply the classic identity-switch rules to the slasher genre. Usually, this gag is played for laughs in comedies such as The Change-Up (with Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman), or classic examples including George Burns’s 18 Again! and Carl Reiner’s All of Me.

Using the formula in a slasher comedy instantly establishes a bottomless well of potential, but very little of it makes it to the screen in Freaky. Serial killer Barney Garris (Vaughn) goes by the name The Blissfield Butcher, though the movie initially treats his legacy as “a campfire yarn” that teenagers don’t really believe – until they find themselves being hunted by this lumbering stalker. Freaky introduces a magical knife, stolen from the collection of a dime-store artifact collector, which Garris attempts to use on mild-mannered high-schooler Millie (Kathryn Newton), causing the body swap.

And then… nothing. I mean, Freaky goes through all of the expected beats. Millie, in the body of the Blissfield Butcher, needs to convince her two closest friends (Celeste O’Conner, Misha Osherovich) what has happened to her. Barney, in Millie’s body, infiltrates the high school and causes a little bit of mayhem. The movie assumes it’d be funny to watch Vaughn and Newton playing exaggerated versions of each other, and it can be. But Freaky doesn’t advance the concept, or even take full advantage of what should have been a real agent of chaos, and that’s unleashing a serial killer into an unsuspecting school.

Freaky Director Christopher Landon Raised Our Expectations.

It’s possible I went into Freaky with higher expectations because of Christopher Landon’s involvement. He cleverly fashioned the Groundhog Day premise into a winning horror romp in Happy Death Day, then elevated the concept into a twisty time-travel thriller for Happy Death Day 2U. Greenlighting a body-swap horror comedy from Landon sounded exciting, but the savvy understanding of the inherent clichés of that formula don’t lead to anything new in Freaky, outside of a few memorable kills.

Based on its opening act, where Vaughn silently hunts a small party of bratty teens through a darkened mansion, Freaky almost tricked me into believing Landon was paying homage to vintage 1980s horror films. Vaughn’s silent, mask-wearing killer conjures imagery of Jason and Michael, while the lone scene of “backstory” we get on the underdeveloped character – a glimpse into his home when Millie wakes up in the killer’s body – is straight out of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

But instead of choosing one genre to spoof (or properly investigate), Freaky throws all sorts of nods against the wall, waiting for one of them to stick and take the movie in an interesting direction. It kind of doesn’t.

Vince Vaughn And Kathryn Newton Salvage Freaky.

Casting helps most body-swap projects succeed, and Freaky is no different. If you thought, going in to Freaky, that it’d be entertaining to watch 50-year-old Vaughn playing an unsure, kind but awkward teenage girl, you’d be right. And when Newton assumes the identity of the bloodthirsty serial killer in the pint-sized frame of a student, she makes the most of the physical challenges – obstacles, really – that come with a teenage girl trying to murder a bitter teacher (Alan Ruck) or a member of the town’s law enforcement.

And if that’s your base-level expectations, Freaky might meet them. The horror comedy delivers exactly what you expected when you saw the trailer, and nothing more. If anything, it overstays its welcome for a forced girl-power conclusion that pushes the already thin credibility of the concept past its breaking point.

It’s ultimately bothersome because if handled right, Freaky has all of the ingredients of a rewarding horror franchise that could leap from scenario to scenario, seeing how many odd pairing one could create with this mystical blade and some unsuspecting victims. But Freaky falters, so the premise might need fresher ideas of Blumhouse plans on trying this again.

Vince Vaughn doesn’t do sequels. It’s kind of remarkable. Despite the fact that he has starred in numerous pictures for which a sequel would be a simply layup (you know you’d buy a ticket to Dodgeball 2), Vaughn has avoided them. He has a reason, which he shared with the ReelBlend crew in an interview on behalf of his upcoming horror comedy Freaky. But those reasons also feed into exactly why he thinks that NOW is the right time for the team behind Wedding Crashers to make Wedding Crashers 2.

It has been 15 years since professional wedding crashers Jeremy (Vince Vaughn) and John (Owen Wilson) found true love in Gloria (Isla Fisher) and Claire (Rachel McAdams) respectively. The comedy had a sweet “ride off into the sunset” moment for each couple, but endings in a comedy rarely stop the crew from trying to recapture the magic. Hell, there are three Hangover movies. Was that necessary, on any level?

Where would Wedding Crashers go in this contemporary age? It’s hard to predict, though it does sound like Vince Vaughn at least has heard a pitch for Wedding Crashers 2. Here’s what else Vince Vaughn has to say about the possible Wedding Crashers 2 project:

You know what’s going to be absurd? Getting that entire cast back. You can’t do it without Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. But I’d also argue that you can’t attempt to bring a sequel to the big screen without the contributions of Isla Fisher, Rachel McAdams, Christopher Walken, Jane Seymour and, yes, Bradley Cooper. Do you think the Oscar-nominated director of A Star is Born is willing to come back and play Sack Lodge?

While you are waiting for movement on Wedding Crashers 2, you can catch up with Vince Vaughn in the new body-swap horror movie Freaky, directed by Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day). It’s a clever play on the tradition Freaky Friday formula, though because it’s a Blumhouse movie, a high school girl (Kathryn Newton) changes bodies with a serial killer (Vaughn). The film will be in select theaters on November 13.

It's been pretty rough to be a movie fan in 2020. Due to theater closures and production delays we just haven't seen as many movies as we usually do and there hasn't been nearly as much to get excited about. Of course, this means that when something that looks good does hit, we can get really excited. Such has been the case with Freaky, the new Blumhouse horror movie starring Vince Vaughn. We've only actually seen the trailer, but based on that alone the film has made a huge fan of one guy who knows a bit about horror, Stephen King, who did not hold back the language of his praise.

The prolific author took to Twitter after the Freaky trailer dropped to not only sing the praises, quite explicitly, of what he thinks looks like an excellent film but also to specifically single out Vince Vaughn, as Stephen King is already willing to put Vaughn in for Oscar consideration.

Freaky is a body-swap movie like Disney's Freaky Friday, which obviously inspired the title of the new Blumhouse feature. However, while those films have always been exclusively comedies, this one one is a horror film, though one that obviously isn't without a sense of humor. Vince Vaughn's character is a serial killer who stabs Kathryn Newton, but instead of killing her, he switches bodies with her. This turns the young girl into a serial killer and the older man into somebody with the mind of a young girl.

This means that throughout most of the trailer, and one assumes most of the movie, Vince Vaughn is actually playing a high school girl. This is where the praise for the performance by Stephen King, and a lot of other people as well, is coming from. Vince Vaughn does a pretty impressive performance as a high school girl.

And to be fair, if Freaky were another sort of movie that had an actor so convincingly playing somebody so much unlike themselves, even just playing against type, it's possible that Vince Vaughn could be considered for major awards. The fact that Freaky is a horror movie, and not only that but a horror-comedy, would normally make any sort of serious consideration unlikely. But then again, it's 2020, so who the hell knows? We fully expect the next Academy Awards to be pretty wild due to all the release delays, so anything is possible.

Actors face all sorts of challenges throughout their careers, and Vince Vaughn has certainly encountered his share. Playing everything from comedy goofballs in films like Wedding Crashers to military heroes in awards darlings like Hacksaw Ridge, the man has encountered a killer resume of roles throughout his decades of acting. And now he’s about to take on one hell of a challenge as Freaky, the latest horror flick from Blumhouse and co-writer/director Christopher Landon, has Vaughn is playing a teenage girl. In the grand tradition of body swapping movies like Freaky Friday, and slasher flicks like Friday the 13th, Freaky starts out telling the story of young Millie (The Society’s Kathryn Newton) and how she was almost killed by a masked murderer known as “The Butcher” (Vince Vaughn). The only problem is, instead of being murdered, Millie found herself suffering a fate worse than death. As it turns out, the dagger that The Butcher uses as his weapon of choice has the power to switch souls, and now her consciousness is stuck in his body.

As you can see, Freaky uses this concept to its greatest extent, and how could it not? After all, this is a reteaming between Blumhouse Productions and Happy Death Day franchise mastermind Christopher Landon. So while we’re not getting the third film that series has promised its eager fans, Freaky is ready to provide the same sort of murderous laughs that we’ve seen from Landon in the past. Just with an entirely new body to walk around in.

What’s equally impressive in Freaky’s body swap scenario is the fact that Kathryn Newton looks like an absolute stone cold killer in this movie. Just as Vince Vaughn is crushing the perils of Millie being trapped in The Butcher’s body, Newton is absolutely murdering her time as a teenage psycho killer/smart ass. Actually, the more I talk about this movie, the more it sounds like we’ve gotten that remake of Face/Off that the world has constantly been threatened with. Except with more comedy, less Hugh Jackman, and a huge dose of magical killer energy.

It looks like an amazing fall for Blumhouse, as not only is Freaky looking like an absolutely off the rails horror-comedy, but in addition to their Welcome To The Blumhouse line of films debuting on Prime Video in October, there’s going to be a lot of content from producer Jason Blum’s spooky production shingle. And while it may be hitting theaters in the post-Halloween glow of 2020, Freaky will aptly enough find its way into theaters on Friday, November 13th. Freaky indeed, Blumhouse.

Why It's A Good Option For Vince Vaughn Fans: While Swingers will undoubtedly remain his most signature performance, as I'll discuss in a bit, Brawl in Cell Block 99 might arguably be Vince Vaughn's best. In a transformative turn, Vaughn loses his hair and bulks up his muscles to show us how physical of an actor he can be. While we're used to seeing Vaughn fast-talk his way around town, Brawl is a notably toned down role, allowing him to be intuitive and interpretative in surprisingly really effective and bruising ways. While there's a pulpy simplicity to this story, Vaughn brings an invested sincerity, showing a willingness to expand himself as a dramatic performer and really pack a punch.

Swingers (HBO Max)

A struggling comedian (Jon Favreau) and an aspiring actor (Vince Vaughn) make their way through Hollywood during the 1990s swing revival.

Why It's A Good Option For Vince Vaughn Fans: With Swingers, Vince Vaughn went from an up-and-coming actor to a Hollywood lead. This wasn't an accident. In a role written by his co-star, Jon Favreau, that was clearly specialized for his talents, Vaughn provides a charismatic, entertaining performance as Trent Walker, a high-energy, party-loving personality who is always looking for a good time. His performance is as quotable as it is magnetizing, allowing you to get hooked into this buddy duo's off-kilter dynamic. Vaughn clearly relishes every piece of dialogue and makes the most of every line delivery, producing a character who isn't the best person in the world (to say the least), but someone who makes for a wildly transfixing presence.

Into The Wild (Starz)

A former top student (Emilie Hirsch) abandons his possessions and professional desires by hitchhiking to Alaska to live out in the wilderness.

Why It's A Good Option For Vince Vaughn Fans: In Sean Penn's soulful adaptation of Jon Krakauer's best-selling biography, Vince Vaughn plays only a parting role in the proceedings. As a contract harvesting company owner who is later arrested for satellite piracy, Vaughn's character doesn't tell a long time to shine, but Vaughn makes the most of it, playing up his talents for capturing humble, hard-working penny pinchers who like to prove themselves and leave a good impression. As a mentor figure, if one not without his legal troubles, Vaughn provides a refrained, refreshingly downplayed dramatic role, allowing the comedic actor to showcase his expansive talents — notably at a point when he was typecast for certain goofy leading man roles.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (HBO Max)

To save their local gym from a corporate health fitness chain, a group of misfits enters a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament with a $50,000 top prize.

Why It's A Good Option For Vince Vaughn Fans: As a send-up and a tribute to the '80s sports comedies, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story is a goofy, consistently outrageous farce with an inspired premise, some enjoyably ludicrous jokes, and a fittingly game cast. While Rip Torn and Ben Stiller get more attention to their sillier, more bombastic supporting performances, Vince Vaughn carries this comedy well as the straight man, relying on his relaxed demeanor and his appealing everyman charisma to get us invested in our sweet-natured misfit dodgeball players with humble ambitions, if not proven skills. It's an entertaining starring vehicle for Vaughn — even if he doesn't get proper credit here.

Made (Cinemax)

Two aspiring boxers (Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn) get involved in a money-laundering scheme.

Why It's A Good Option For Vince Vaughn Fans: Coming a few short years after Swingers' astounding indie success, Jon Favreau's directorial debut, Made, reunited the actor/screenwriter with his friend/co-star Vince Vaughn for another spirited buddy comedy. While the results aren't as memorable or quotable as their first collaboration, this crime comedy is heightened by their renewed on-screen chemistry, and they continue to work well together in this follow-up picture. While Vaughn's performance might not be as natural (and potentially autobiographical) as it was in their first filmmaking effort, he still brings the heat in this second effort, allowing the first-time director to follow the money and let his increasingly famous friend steal the spotlight. Made doesn't make for another comedy smash, but Favreau's movie is still enjoyable in its own right.

Fighting With My Family (Hulu/Amazon Prime/Epix)

A dramedy biopic exploring the early days of WWE wrestler Paige (Florence Pugh), who must step away from her wrestling-obsessed family (Nick Frost, Lena Headey, Zak Zodiac) to live out her professional ambitions.

Why It's A Good Option For Vince Vaughn Fans: While it's not the type of comedy that steps too far outside the lines (or, perhaps more accurately, outside the ring), Stephen Merchant's appealing, often charming family film is benefitted nicely by its warm heart and its engaging lead performances from Florence Pugh, Zak Zodiac, and Nick Frost. It also features a rock-solid supporting turn from Vince Vaughn as Hunter Morgan, Paige's coach throughout her training process. As this demanding-but-considerate mentor figure, Vaughn infuses this biopic dramedy with a well-rounded personality who brings out some of the movie's finest, most rewarding dramatic beats.

Dragged Across Concrete (HBO Max)

Two ill-tempered cops (Mel Gibson, Vince Vaughn) dive into the criminal underworld to be compensated after they're suspended from the force.

Why It's A Good Option For Vince Vaughn Fans: Reunited with Brawl in Cell Block 99's S. Craig Zahler, while also re-teaming with his Hacksaw Ridge director Mel Gibson, Vince Vaughn provides an intriguing take on the procedural buddy cop format with Dragged Across Concrete, a gritty, vicious neo-noir which features another great collaborative turn from the experimenting actor. Its vile characters and seedy focus on unbecoming characters won't make it an easy watch for some viewers, particularly with its extended runtime, but Zahler knows how to blend his pulpy sensibilities with a pair of hard-nosed cops who want to prove themselves even when their badges are off. While often unflinching and demanding, this drama works well with Vaughn's strengths.

Why It's A Good Option For Vince Vaughn Fans: While Sean Astin is undoubtedly the star of Rudy, this celebrated sports film also has a unique place in comedy history, weirdly enough. Indeed, it's the movie where co-stars Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau met, sparking up a friendship between two promising young actors that would result in collaborations like Swingers, which propelled both their careers immensely. While that makes for an interesting bit of trivia, it should also be noted that Rudy is well-liked in its own right. Many sports lovers consider it one of the best football movies out there in American cinema, while even non-sports fans might find themselves whipping a tear or two from their eyes.

Wedding Crashers (HBO Max)

Two divorced mediators (Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn) crash weddings in an effort to meet and seduce bridesmaids.

Why It's A Good Option For Vince Vaughn Fans: Vince Vaughn is often at his comedic best whenever he has someone to work with. Be it Jon Favreau or Jennifer Aniston, Vaughn is an actor who can really sparkle off another performer's energy, which is exactly what happened when he joined forces with Owen Wilson to make Wedding Crashers. The raunchy 2005 comedy is kooky and wacky in its approach, but what really sells the comedy is the winning bromance between Wilson and Vaughn. As a pair of party-hopping bachelors looking for a good time, it's not hard to imagine a lesser version of this film where these non-committal socialites become a creepy couple of horndogs. Thankfully, Vaughn and Wilson remain charming and appealing together.

Clay Pigeons (Starz)

In a small Montana town, Clay (Joaquin Phoenix) finds himself near an assortment of dead bodies, making him the number one suspect in a murder investigation led by FBI agent Dale Shelby (Janeane Garofalo). More cadavers pile up in the process.

Why It's A Good Option For Vince Vaughn Fans: Violent dark comedies with high body counts weren't hard to come by in the 1990s. Every young filmmaker wanted to be the next Quentin Tarantino. While a slim few (if any) found the same high level of success as that revered auteur, director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers) made an admirable attempt in his feature directorial debut, Clay Pigeons. While our leads, Joaquin Phoenix and Janeane Garofalo, are expectedly strong, Vince Vaughn's serial killer provides a splashy bit of sensationalism to the proceedings, allowing the actor to liberally indulge in his darker comedic impulses.

Mr. And Mrs. Smith (HBO Max)

A dissatisfied married couple (Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie) discovers that they're both assassins for competing agencies, tasked with killing each other.

Why It's A Good Option For Vince Vaughn Fans: Vince Vaughn is firmly in "jokey best friend" territory in Doug Liman's match-making action-comedy Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Nevertheless, it's the type of role that Vaughn relishes. Throwing off one-liners to Brad Pitt, who is always playing off his familiar tricks, and serving as his comic foil for a number of outlandish sequences, Vaughn is playing his familiar tune in this studio comedy, but he knows how to milk it for all its worth, providing a few reliable chuckles and several wacky antics in this well-regarded star-power vehicle for Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Having already starred in the thriller Arkansas earlier this year, Vince Vaughn is returning to his comedy bread and butter before summer 2020 is over for Hulu’s latest original movie, The Binge. Following in the footsteps of the critically-acclaimed Palm Springs, this looks like another unique cinematic offering from the streaming service, not the least of which because Vaughn looks very different with a mustache.

Take a look at the first trailer for The Binge below, which takes the general premise of the Purge franchise and filters it through a much more amusing lens.

Within the Purge universe, for one 12-hour period every year, all crime is legal, including murder. The Binge’s world has a similar holiday set in place which isn’t nearly as horrific, but similarly can lead to things getting out of hand: for one night a year, all drugs and alcohol are legal. So while this version of the United States in the near future is “prosperous, clean and sober” nearly all of the time, everyone who’s a high school senior or older can go wild with the controlled substances and booze for a brief period of time each year.

A gloriously mustachioed Vince Vaughn appears in The Binge as the principal of the school the main characters attend, and he clearly doesn’t mind making fun of the people who go way too far with their binges, as evidenced by how he talks about alum Kimberly Jones, who burned her face while imbibing and riding a jet ski that exploded. There’s also an amusing bit towards the end of the trailer where Vaughn’s character, who sounds like he’s searching for his daughter and her friends, ends up at a house with women who are celebrating their Binge more quietly, but are evidently down for things to get more… freaky.

The Binge’s main narrative, however, follows, Skyler Gisondo, Dexter Darden and Eduardo Franco’s characters: Griffin, Hags and Andrew. These three are looking to make one last great high school memory during the Binge holiday, with Griffin specifically looking to tell Grace Van Dien’s Lena that he’s has romantic feelings for her. So along with boasting some Purge elements, The Binge also has a Booksmart vibe going for it.

The movie’s other cast members include Zainne Saleh, Zakary Odrzykowski, Joel Carlino, Hayes MacArthur and Tony Cavelero. Jeremy Garelick directed and co-produced The Binge, and Jordan VanDina wrote the script. With Hulu still relatively new to the original movies game, fingers crossed The Binge ends up anywhere near the same kind of success Palm Springs did earlier this summer.

They say comedy is rooted in tragedy. People laugh to avoid crying. While that might not always be the case, that's fitting when it comes to these peculiarly dramatic performances from comedians/comedic actors. It almost seems like a rite of passage for prominent comedians to leap into dramatic/darker material, and several have proved their chops. It might not always be the roles they're most commonly associated with, but for actors like Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems, it showcases new sides to their familiar screen presence. The results are surprising and exciting in equal measures. No joke. Here are comedians who also stood out in dramatic roles.

Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems)

While he's more commonly associated with his juvenile, boyish Happy Madison productions, including Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, 50 First Dates, The Wedding Singer, and the Grown Ups movies, Adam Sandler has also consistently proven himself as a serious actor. Notably starting with 2003's misunderstood dark dramedy Punch-Drunk Love, which cleverly subverted and dissected the tropes of Sandler's early comedies in an artistic, challenging, yet still bleakly hilarious way, Sandler has dived into dramatic roles — to mixed results. Judd Apatow's Funny People was smartly funny and insightfully self-referential, but Reign Over Me was a middling effort prior. Men, Women & Children was a well-meaning but misbegotten flub, while The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) featured an excellent Sandler performance in this dysfunctional family dramedy.

Tom McCarthy's The Cobbler seemed like an easy winner but it tragically received some of Adam Sandler's worst reviews. But Sandler got some of his best reviews in Uncut Gems, a New York City-based crime drama-thriller following Howard Ratner (Sandler), a down-on-his-luck jewelry salesman with a gambling addiction that involves some very expensive debts and some very bad people. 

The grimy, stylistic, relentless, but appropriately addictive, character piece surprised general audiences used to seeing broader, more conventional comedies from the A-lister. Instead, Uncut Gems finds Sandler giving one of his most committed, commendably foul performances, fully embodying this scumbag with vigor and aplomb. The result is one of the actor's most audacious and daring roles, and one that hopefully proved to Sandler's biggest, most merciless critics that he has serious chops.

Kevin James (Becky)

Best known for The King of Queens and Kevin Can Wait, in addition to comedy film franchises like Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Grown Ups, Kevin James' decision to play a vicious, vindictive neo-Nazi in this year's Becky was certainly a surprising, unexpected one. If you can get past the bold, bizarre casting choice, James proves himself to be a formidable dramatic one, one who isn't afraid to play against the grain and relish his darker impulses. Characters like the aforementioned Paul Blart showcased an underlying sadness, which suggested that James had what it took to be an intriguing dramatic performer, but this bald-headed villainous brute is a stark departure from anything we've seen from him. While some dismissed it as stunt casting, James does convey genuine tension and menace through this violent, cold-blooded character.

While Kevin James' performance isn't a complete revelation, notably with a flimsy screenplay and little insight into this character's motivations, it should hopefully prove to be a stepping stone for his second chapter. Certainly, his YouTube account suggests James can't wait to try darker, more challenging material, though it's unclear if more filmmakers will allow him to do something this outlandishly against his familiar image. Notably, using his physicality not for slapstick comedy but rather to impose suspense and terror is an intriguing change-of-pace.

Eddie Murphy (Dolemite Is My Name)

Eddie Murphy needed a comeback. He impressed everyone with his sensational musical performance in 2006's Dreamgirls, nearly winning an Oscar. But then came Norbit. The ill-received studio comedy was not only a critical flop but it also supposedly killed his award chances. Murphy continued to make several ill-fated studio comedies, not of which captured Dreamgirls' radiant spark or the sharp wit of his earlier comedic work. But after an extended absence, Murphy returned with Dolemite Is My Name, a lively, heartfelt biopic dramedy/tribute to Rudy Ray Moore, best known for playing Dolemite on the stage and screen. Murphy's performance was rewardingly electrifying, feeling more alive than anything he'd done in years. It's also a role that heartily played to his strengths, capturing the humor and heartbreak of this larger-than-life personality.

Patton Oswalt (Big Fan)

Better known then for his stage work and Ratatouille, Patton Oswalt proved his acting chops with 2009's overlooked Big Fan. As a diehard football fan caught in a complicated situation when he's assaulted by his football idol, Oswalt's reverence for pop culture and fandom were put to sharp, poignant use, showcasing the complexities that come with being blindingly reverent to something — to the point where you can't look at it from an objective lens. But for many folks, they didn't realize the extent of Oswalt's acting talents until he starred in 2011's Young Adult, appearing opposite Charlize Theron, in which he gave an excellently nuanced, perspective performance.

Awkwafina (The Farewell)

As an actress, comedian, and musician, Awkwafina continues to gain notice and recognition, notably with standout roles in Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean's Eight. But her most prominent part might actually be her most dramatic. Specifically, last year's tender, personal The Farewell found the rising star at the forefront of one of the most acclaimed movies of the year. And her performance was certainly well-recognized. Beautifully conveying the mix of humor and sorrow that's presented in this nuanced situation, Awkwafina was praised for channeling the deft balance of gentle humor and dramatic pathos with grace and vulnerability. It led to Awkwafina being the first Asian woman in Golden Globes history to win Best Actress.

Vince Vaughn (Brawl In Cell Block 99)

Though not a comedian in a traditional sense, Vince Vaughn came into fame through his star-making role in Swingers, loosely based on his own real-life personality. From there, much like Jon Favreau, Vaughn continued climbing up the Hollywood ladder, starring in Wedding Crashers, Dodgeball, Old School, The Break-Up, and more. While he periodically dived into dramatic territory, notably with Gus Van Sant's much-criticized Psycho remake, Vaughn found his dramatic stride with Brawl in Cell Block 99, a neo-noir prison thriller-drama which follows former boxer-turned-drug mule Bradley Thomas (Vaughn) as he descends several brutal layers of prison hell to protect the woman he loves. 

While previous Vince Vaughn roles relied on his snarky sarcasm, this one challenges Vaughn's physique. With his bald head and imposing height, Vaughn is surprisingly menacing, but that only makes his unexpected emotional sweet side resonate more.

Marlon Wayans (Requiem For A Dream)

Before White Chicks, Little Man, and the first two Scary Movies, Marlon Wayans was a TV star venturing out into movies. Shortly before his movie career would took off, Wayans gave a surprising dramatic performance in 2000's almost relentlessly bleak Requiem for a Dream. In its bold, unflinching look at drug addiction, Wayans not only holds his own opposite Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, and Ellen Burstyn, but he proves his dramatic chops in a performance that doesn't mirror any other throughout his career. It's a shame we haven't seen Wayans take another role in this vein again, though he's set to star in Sofia Coppola's latest, On the Rocks.

Albert Brooks (Drive)

A celebrated actor-director best known for Broadcast News, Out of Sight, Finding Nemo, Modern Romance, Defending Your Life, and Lost in America, the latter three he also helmed, Albert Brooks is a familiar, beloved screen presence, yet he surprised everyone with his dark, menacing villainous role in 2011's Drive. Playing the brooding antagonistic figure to Ryan Gosling's soft-spoken protagonist, Brooks' cold, calculated performance didn't capture any of the warmth or humility seen in his earlier work, conveying a seething contempt and a vigor for violence that was surprising not merely because it came from the voice of Merlin. Intentionally, it was effectively disarming, never allowing us to be two steps ahead of our scowling sociopathic baddie. It showed a new side to Brooks. It should be noted, though, that he also starred in Taxi Driver. What's the deal with him and drivers?

In addition all these strong and/or challenging performances, we'll take this moment to celebrate some comedians who didn't make the list, including Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me? and The Nines, Molly Shannon in Other People and Year of the Dog, Jenny Slate in Obvious Child, Mary Tyler Moore in Ordinary People, Rodney Dangerfield in Natural Born Killers, Stephen Merchant in Logan, Will Ferrell in Stranger than Fiction and Everything Must Go, Richard Pryor in Blue Collar, George Carlin in Jersey Girl, Seth Rogen in Steve Jobs and Take This Waltz, and Ben Stiller in Permanent Midnight, Greenberg, and The Meyerowitz Stories.

The current market of VOD debuts, both from huge studios and independent distributors, is one of untold riches if you know where to look. One title folks should be keeping their eyes open for is actor Clark Duke’s screenwriting/directing debut Arkansas, a southern fried neo-noir about two young men trying to navigate the criminal underground of the titular state. It's an underground that was the perfect place for Vince Vaughn to show off his acting chops and bring an added depth to the film at hand.

Among the stories of how co-star Liam Hemsworth really is as dreamy as you’d hope in real life, or how the memory of his own grandfather helped inspire him to pick John Brandon’s debut novel as his own cinematic opener, my interview with Clark Duke touched upon just why casting the normally comedic Vaughn as the kingpin known to most as “Frog” was such a perfect choice in the grand scheme of things.

Clark Duke himself laid out his reasons for casting Vince Vaughn as Arkansas’ ultimate heavy as follows:

When you think of Vince Vaughn’s filmography, you most likely jump straight to films like Swingers and Wedding Crashers, with a side of Dodgeball and Old School following straight ahead. It’s just a by-product of the sort of comedy career the actor steadily cultivated in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s; and it’s exactly where Clark Duke wants you to be when Arkansas starts weaving its tangled web.

The truth is, we don’t even know that Vince Vaughn is the man known as “Frog” in Arkansas until we're fairly deep into the film’s plot. By that point, we’ve been introduced to Vaughn’s presence as a kindly proprietor of a pawn shop, thanks to his dealings with the film’s two protagonists: Clark Duke’s Swin and Liam Hemsworth’s Kyle.

Much like those young men, we the audience are assuming that this infamous “Frog” could be anyone else we’ve been introduced to in the movie. Both Vivica A. Fox and John Malkovich’s characters feel like prime suspects as we wind through Arkansas’ past and present-jumping narrative.

You can blame that “good cinematic baggage” of Vince Vaughn’s long and storied career for throwing off the scent of who the true criminal mastermind in Arkansas is. It’s the same sort of subversion that’s helped Vaughn reinvent himself as a serious dramatic lead in the last couple of years, in films like Hacksaw Ridge, Brawl In Cell Block 99, and the WWE dramedy biopic Fighting With My Family.

Defying the expectations of just being a likable lead all the time, Clark Duke knew that Vince Vaughn could pull off both the lighter and darker sides of Frog’s character needed to pin together Arkansas’ overall story of control and legacy in a very dangerous business. In the grand scheme of the story, which Duke adapted virtually beat for beat in his screenplay, the writer/director was also telling a very personal story.

An Arkansas native himself, Clark Duke had always wanted to tell a story surrounding the Dixie Mafia from the region. His big reason was, as hinted towards earlier, his own grandfather was, as he puts it, a “tertiary figure” in the criminal environment working out of his home state. So with the novel of Arkansas giving him the perfect character in Frog, all that was needed was the perfect actor to flesh this figure out in living, breathing color.

Trusting someone like Vince Vaughn to bring to life a literary character is enough praise for the man’s efforts in Arkansas. But to add on the additional dramatic weight of embodying this character that Clark Duke saw as a perfect fictional surrogate for his own grandfather speaks even higher volumes of just how much Vaughn’s performance sold Duke.

The end result is something audiences should be able to enjoy themselves, as Vince Vaughn, and the rest of the Arkansas cast, deliver a neo-noir film that has already drawn comparisons to the works of Quentin Tarantino and Cormac McCarthy. You can see for yourself just how well Arkansas plays out, as it’s currently available on Digital HD, as well as Blu-ray and DVD.

It's far from uncommon for particular actors to get associated with particular kinds of roles. If audiences react particularly favorably to a certain combination of performer and character, there is a natural desire, especially by those who make decisions impacting the box office, to combine what works over and over again. Having said that, it seems like Vince Vaughn plays the same roles in his movies even more often than other actors. Like, literally, the same characters.

If we're being honest, Vince Vaughn sort of plays the same character over and over again. Even in the examples below, the nuances between one character type and another are only a matter of degree, but, even if we're being generous, you can pretty much divide up all of Vince Vaughn's feature film roles into five different categories. Here they are.

Sarcastic Mentor With A Heart Of Gold

Fighting With My Family (Hutch)

Fighting with My Family is Vince Vaughn's most recent big screen role. He plays the character of Hutch, a professional wrestling coach for the WWE who trains a group of up-and-coming female sports entertainers. Hutch is a sarcastic jackass who is always armed with a quip to make his students feel stupid. It seems clear he hates Paige (Florance Pugh), the main character of the film, more than anybody, but don't worry, he actually has a heart of gold and is using his rough exterior as a way to inspire her to show she has what it takes.

Hacksaw Ridge (Sgt. Howell)

Sgt. Howell in Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge is basically Hutch, just with the volume turned all the way up and the stakes raised to the point of actual war. He's there to whip his students into shape, whether they like it or not, just like Hitch. Sgt. Howell seems to hate Private Doss (Andrew Garfield), the main character of the film, more than anybody, but don't worry, because eventually Hutch, err Howell, realizes that Doss has what it takes.

Sarcastic Sidekick

Swingers (Trent)

For many, Vince Vaughn first got noticed thanks to Jon Favreau's indie comedy hit Swingers. It was here that Vaughn's general character would become the most defined. While Trent is "the cool one" of the pair, he is ultimately the sidekick for the purposes of the film. He's always got a quip ready, and while he spends most of his time insulting his friend, he does care, even if he has a hard time showing it.

Made (Ricky)

Made would bring Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn together again, and Vaughn's character Ricky is basically just Trent from Swingers if Trent found himself working with the mob. The pair are still friends, even though -- like in Swingers -- they seem to fight more than not. In the end, however, the friendship wins out.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Eddie)

And If Ricky is just Trent if Trent wanted to join the mob, Eddie from Mr. & Mrs. Smith is if Trent decided to become a professional assassin. This is a smaller role for Vaughn, but the one-liners don't come any less frequently. It should be said, while Eddie is basically just the comic relief, he knows how to handle a gun more so than his other sidekick personas.

Underachieving Man Child

Wedding Crashers (Jeremy Grey)

This category could, almost by itself, encompass the career of Vince Vaughn, because frequently he plays characters who are less than mature for their age. Still the difference here is that the character's lack of maturity is often part of the point. In the case of Wedding Crashers, we have a pair of guys who are far too old to be living lives like this, and mostly seem to do so because they're not capable of much else. Jeremy isn't an idiot, but he has chosen to remain immature.

Old School (Bernard "Beanie" Campbell)

Nothing says lack of maturity more than a bunch of adult men who decide to start a fraternity. In many ways, Bernard is actually one of Vaughn's more mature characters. He's a father, after all, but one gets the impression that if life had taken a slightly different direction with him, he might have become as big an immature fool as some of his friends here. Still, he's the one who sets the wheels in motion on this insane idea. He's not the best role model for his kids.

Fred Claus

As the title character in Fred Claus, Vince Vaughn's lack of maturity is at least understandable. He's the immortal brother of the actual Santa Claus. He feels rejected by his own family, and thus his lack of maturity is something of an act of rebellion. The basic aspects of this character type are on display here in every possible way. He's selfish and he takes advantage of people as much as possible to get what he wants with no regard for others.

Delivery Man (David Wozniak)

Delivery Man's David Woziak at least gets some points for wanting to be more than the underachieving man-child that he is, he's just really bad at it. He's nothing more than a delivery man who paid his way through school by donating sperm, which has led to a a fairly unfortunate situation where he has fathered several hundred children. It's one thing to be a little overwhelmed by this, or to want to help out those children in some way, but while his heart may be in the right place, his abilities as a mature adult really aren't.

Sarcastic Husband

Four Christmases (Bradford 'Brad' McVie)

Things don't change for Vince Vaughn when his character gets married. He's still a wise-talking smart-ass, just one who has a significant other while he drops the one-liners. In the case of Four Christmases, that significant other is played by Reese Witherspoon in a story where the pair have to visit all of their divorced parents over one exceptionally long Christmas. While the relationship between the couple isn't really the focus here, it's clear that Witherspoon's character is the more together of the pair.

Couples Retreat (Dave)

Spoiler alert, at the end of Couples Retreat, Vince Vaughn's character is compared to an ass, as in the animal. Is there anything more that needs to be said?

The Break-Up (Gary Grobowski)

Ok, technically the characters in The Break-Up are not actually married, they're simply in a committed relationship, but the dynamics of that relationship play out in essentially the same way. Jennifer Aniston's character is the mature adult one and Vince Vaughn plays the screw up. Everything would have likely worked out if he wasn't an idiot.

Underdog In Over His Head

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (Peter La Fleur)

Peter La Fleur is a bit of an idiot, and he's just as sarcastic and sardonic as any Vince Vaughn character, but what sets him, and others in this category, apart is that he's ultimately a decent guy at the start and the end of the movie. The story in Dodgeball is about a struggle for success against a villain (in this case Ben Stiller), but not redemption, as most of his jackass characters tend to be more focused on.

Unfinished Business (Daniel Trunkman)

Did anybody even see Unfinished Business? Not really, but that's OK, because you've seen the character before. Vince Vaughn is getting shit on by people more powerful than he is, but the little guy is ready to fight back to the best of his ability. After being overlooked at his job Dan leaves and strikes out on his own. Here the villain is Dan's old boss, played by Sienna Miller. Dan and his scrappy team have to overcome the odds and show that they're good enough, even though they can barely keep up.

The Internship (Billy McMahon)

Another place where Vince Vaughn has to defeat a bunch of bullies to show that he's good enough is The Internship. In this case he's re-teamed with Owen Wilson as they try to get jobs at Google. The pair of old dogs try to learn new tricks, and their hearts are in the right place, but they clearly have little clue what they're actually doing in the tech sector.

Give Vince Vaughn a role where he can smirk at the camera and deliver one-liners, and he's a happy guy. Beyond that, there are only a few details that differentiate one Vince Vaughn role from another. For the most, there's nothing wrong with that. He's still entertaining, even if we've seen something very similar before.

Vince Vaughn has played criminals in True Detective and other movies before, and he had a real-life run-in with the law this weekend when he was arrested for driving under the influence and obstructing an officer. Reports this weekend indicate that early on the morning of June 10, Vince Vaughn was pulled over in California at a DUI checkpoint, was given a sobriety test and failed. More details on what happened, below.

Vince Vaughn was reportedly driving in Hermosa Beach when he was pulled into a sobriety checkpoint by the Manhattan Beach Police Department. Reports say he was stopped at the DUI checkpoint at 12:30 a.m. Pacific Time, and was riding with a passenger at the time of the incident. TMZ, who broke the story, says that both Vaughn and the unnamed passenger were allegedly uncooperative, leading to them being asked to leave the vehicle and eventually getting arrested by the police department. They were taking to jail at 1 a.m. PT.

Bail at the time was set at $5,000 for Vince Vaughn, but he has since posted it and headed home. This isn't the first time Vaughn has been arrested; he was also taken to jail back in 2001 following a bar brawl. In that incident the stakes were even higher. He was at the bar with Steve Buscemi, who was stabbed several times by a man named Timothy Fogerty during the brawl. That incident happened in Wilmington, North Carolina, where both Vaughn and Buscemi were filming the flick Domestic Disturbance. Producer Scott Rosenberg was also arrested at the time. Fortunately, Steve Buscemi ended up being OK and the film proceeded forward after the incident. (Although we wouldn't call it the finest project on any of those men's resumes.)

One of the last projects that Vince Vaughn completed actually took him to prison. He starred in Brawl in Cell Block 99, a movie about a drug mule who goes to jail and ends up getting involved in acts of brutality during a riot. It was only a few years ago that he also starred as career criminal Franky Semyon in the second season of HBO's True Detective, as well. When not doing comedy, which he's definitely most famous for, gritty crime stories seem to work for the actor.

Los Angeles and the surrounding area is definitely a driving city, but this is a good reminder that there are apps like Uber and Lyft out there and there are still cab services if you are out and about while inebriated. It's been over a decade since Ben Stiller went up against Vince Vaughn in the movies' most epic game of dodgeball ever seen. Now they're going to do it again. The pair of actors have come together to film a video that promotes a charity dodgeball game that will bring the Purple Cobras and the Average Joes together again. This time, you have the ability to join in the game. Check out the video, below.

The video comes from the charity fundraising organization Omaze, who works with movie frequently to help support numerous charities. We've seen them set up walk-on roles in Star Wars movies and offer red carpet premiers to various Marvel films, but this time rather than attaching their promotion to a new project, they're going back in time and picking up an older, though very popular, comedy, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. Ben Stiller hosts the video completely in character as White Goodman, and he looks like he just stepped off the set of the movie, nothing has changed. He offers to play dodgeball with the lucky winner of the Omaze drawing, before Vince Vaughn, Justin Long, and Christine Taylor all arrive and offer to let the winner join their team instead. Apparently, there will be a reenactment of the finale of the movie that anybody might be lucky enough to take part in.

According to the Omaze website, the winner will receive airfare and hotel accommodations to the event, the opportunity to play dodgeball with the group, a photograph with everybody in a custom jersey, and pizza after the game with Ben Stiller. Proceeds from the drawing will benefit the Stiller Foundation, a charity founded by the actor which helps children by providing them with educational opportunities, primarily in Haiti.

Needless to say, if you're a fan of Dodgeball, then this would be a lot of fun. The only thing that's not 100% clear here is whether the actors will be playing the game in character. Playing dodgeball with Ben Stiller would be great, playing with White Goodman would be better. We're guessing that since the promo video is shot entirely in character, that's how the game will go down. It sounds like a great deal of fun, and a fantastic way to raise money for a cause. It's not a bad way to spend a few bucks if you've got the money to spare. Few actors have become more intrinsically linked with the comedy genre than Vince Vaughn over the course of the last two decades. While the actor has certainly performed in his fair share of war movies, thrillers and horror flicks, his legacy in Hollywood has been secured by his performances in films like Swingers and Wedding Crashers. Given that stellar reputation for delivering comedic performances with incredible ease, we are always on the lookout for whatever projects Vaughn manages to line up for himself. As it turns out, it appears that the comedy icon has officially signed on to act alongside Dwayne Johnson in the upcoming wrestling dramedy Fighting with My Family.

A report from Variety indicates that Vince Vaughn has officially joined the cast of Fighting with My Family. Specific information has yet to be revealed regarding the nature of Vaughn's role in the film, but casting him alongside Dwayne Johnson is pretty much a sure-fire recipe for comedy gold. They are two of the most charming actors working today, so we can pretty much expect to see an excellent synergy between their respective types of charisma.

Vince Vaughn joins what could only be referred to as an eclectic cast of performers who have already signed on for the project. In addition to Dwayne Johnson, Fighting with my Family has also already enlisted the acting talents of Shaun of the Dead's Nick Frost, as well as Game of Thrones' Lena Headey. There's a vast array of acting talent present in this film, so this will undoubtedly become one of the most intriguing projects of the next year.

Written and directed by Stephen Merchant (who will appear as Caliban in James Mangold's Logan next month), Fighting with My Family centers on a former wrestler and his family as they make a living performing at intimate venues all over the country. The movie will likely have particular significance to The Rock, as it primarily takes inspiration from the real-life experiences of his fellow WWE star Paige and her family of professional wrestlers. That is an inherently absurd premise and ripe for a comedic take, but we have a feeling that this real story will also be mined for a quite a bit of raw, emotional drama as well.

Comedy has always been distilled down to the formula of "tragedy plus time." Strangely enough, if you add too much time to a comedy, it looks like you wind up going straight back to tragedy. Certainly nothing is more tragic than the shambling corpse of a franchise/film you loved from the past, being resurrected for a severely underwhelming rehash/refresh in our modern era.

Bad Santa 2 is the most recent bomb of that caliber, but the ghosts of such films as Son of The Mask, both Dumb & Dumber follow-ups and the recent announcement of a sequel to Wedding Crashers all converge on this weekend's bomb of a follow-up. Which raises the question: Why are comedy sequels so damned hard to make work? Well, we're not ones to shy away from such questions, so we're going to try and take on the big reasons we feel that comedy sequels, for the most part, bite the big one.

So let's start out on the surface and look at the big problem with all of the films mentioned above. All of the franchises mentioned in the intro have, at the very least, nine years between the initial installment and the follow-up/cash grab. With more narratively driven and dramatic works, a wait like that might be easier to handle than that of a comedy film. But with a comedy movie, there are some key factors that require a quicker turn-around time than most other films. One such reason is due to the fact that humor, like it or not, tends to have an expiration date.

Case in point: if you were to tell a joke from Deadpool to your friends this weekend, they'd still think it was pretty funny. However, unless it becomes a seriously impacting favorite of fans all over, that same joke is probably going to become stale by mid-next year, tops. The reason being that the public's tastes in what's funny and what isn't change over time. Think of it as a game of one-upmanship, with the acts that follow trying to vault over the line of funny the film before it set up. While the kids loved Napoleon Dynamite and made "Vote For Pedro" a slogan of its time, today its effect is more of a niche appeal to those scattered die hard fans.

Not only do comedy movies need to up the ante when it comes to the laughs, they need to keep in mind the marketability of their leads. In the case of Bad Santa 2, the problem lies more in the fact that Billy Bob Thornton is pretty much being paid to do exactly the same damned thing he did in Bad Santa, only in a new town and with new faces to help or hinder him. So in that case, upping the ante was the major reason why that film failed, besides so much time passing that allowed for fans to forget the finer points of the first film's existence.

However, in the case of the proposed Wedding Crashers 2, the marketability factor seems to be the bigger problem. Both Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are at different points in their careers, neither of which sees them poised to become comedy superstars yet again. Come to think of it, Wilson's in double trouble with this factor, as another Shanghai Noon sequel seems to be ignoring the fact that Wilson has been a repeat offender of this rule, as Zoolander 2 and even Little Fockers, has proven that Wilson is usually better when the material is fresh.

Which brings us to the royal edict of comedy films: you don't always need a sequel. Comedy works because it's fast, it's smart and it's unexpected -- all of the things sequels usually tend to be the antithesis of. The thrill of the unknown is gone, and the temptation to go bigger/harder with the jokes from the previous film is always there. Making a sequel to a comedy gives into one of the most dirty, human impulses of all: stretching a joke that everyone in the room loved in order to stay at the center of the attention. You can sequelize a comic book film, and possibly a drama, but comedies are harder beasts to tame for multiple outings when the key ingredient to a comedy is its comedic premise.

Ultimately, Bad Santa 2 is a victim of a curse that has befallen plenty of beloved properties, both comedic and dramatic. However, it's comedies that have a greater chance of succumbing to the problems of subpar sequels, and if anything should be learned by this weekend's dramatic failure, it's that going back to the well sometimes means the water is going to be a bit dirtier the second time around.
