This year’s best movie moments like watching Barbie become human or the Trinity test scene in Oppenheimer brought us tears, shock, and awe. But throughout film history, we do have a handful of movie moments that come off as thrown in. Fans weighed in on what out-of-place movie scenes still bother them such as Grease, Now You See Me, and more.

Directors may choose to throw in some unnecessary sequences in their movies because it’s visually appealing or possibly to increase shock value. Seeing Jennifer Aniston’s stripper dance in We’re the Millers may have looked hot, but wasn’t necessary to the film’s journey. It was the same deal with the groundbreaking yet long Jurassic World death scene of watching the mauling and killing of a minor character. 

Well, Reddit users weighed in on their own movie scenes that have bothered them for even existing like Grease’s "Beauty School Dropout" scene.

When you think about it, this Reddit user is right because we obviously see Frenchie has talent if she can transform goody-two-shoes Sandy into the sexy woman any greaser would want. I remember when I watched it for the first time I thought it was strange seeing a random character have his own song number, but not this Pink Lady. Plus, what also didn’t make sense from that Grease scene was Frenchie not hiding her pink hair-don’t in one of the wigs we saw in her bedroom for the “Look At Me, I’m Sandra Dee” scene. Then again, it shows the importance of a teen not dropping out of school and she can always go to beauty school later.

Now You See Me presents an FBI agent and a detective tracking down magicians who pull off bank heists during their performances. One Reddit user pointed out an unnecessary scene that reminded us the heist film could have been great if not for its poor ending.

I can understand this Reddit user’s aggravation. Now You See Me’s ending revealed the FBI agent who was chasing The Four Horsemen, played by Mark Ruffalo, was actually the one orchestrating their heist actions to expose corruption within the system. You wouldn’t be able to put it under the list of the best cinematic plot twists because it came off as misleading more than cleverly done all for shock value.

 There are so many Dark Knight scenes we still think about, but another Reddit comment brought something to light about the jaw-dropping party-crashing scene that makes me think about it more.

It’s true that it’s almost like all Joker wanted to do was find Harvey Dent and then kill Rachel if he wasn’t found. But then what? Does he just walk along his merry way out of the building? Did he do anything else to the rest of the people at the party? It’s like the scene in Spider-Man 3 when Spider-Man saves Gwen Stacy, but doesn’t go back for the others who were in danger in the collapsing building. I guess in the case of Christopher Nolan, maybe he didn’t want to drag on the scene for too long. 

One more Reddit comment questioned one aspect of Toy Story’s Buzz that puzzles me too now.

This Reddit question has a point. If Buzz thinks he’s a human space ranger, you’d think he’d attempt to talk to Andy when he walks into the room. But, I guess that would make things too complicated as Woody wouldn’t be able to stop him or he’d reveal himself as a talking toy too.

With all of these Reddit users bringing attention to plot holes and random moments from well-known movies like in Grease or Now You See Me, it makes you want to scratch your head just thinking about them. You begin to question the director’s motives in why these particular scenes were so important to be kept in the movie. Clearly, they’re the only ones who can answer that. Ed Helms wasn't a part of the leading family in We're the Millers – which consisted of Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, and Will Poulter. Honestly, We're the Millers is one of Jason Sudeikis' best movies, too. 

But you want to know who Ed Helms did play? The supplier of said drug that Sudeikis' character was taking across the border into America. Helms played Brad Gurdlinger. Yes, that name is hilarious, and so was Helms' role. He is so funny, and his chemistry with Sudeikis is off the charts.

The Hangover Franchise (2009 - 2013)

You can't get more iconic than The Hangover franchise for Ed Helms, considering it's one of the movies that blew him up as an actor. The films follow a group of friends who get into wacky adventures the day after bachelor parties when they can't remember what the heck happened the night before. 

All three movies are different in the stories they tell. Still, the main three stars of The Hangover cast – Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper, and Zach Galifianakis – always delivered hilarious moments that make me snicker to this day, more than ten years after the last film was released. 

I'm still waiting for a fourth film, but I doubt we'll ever get there, and you can watch Ed Helms in some of his prime comedic acting.

Jeff, Who Lives At Home (2011)

Directed by Jay and Mark Duplass, Jeff, Who Lives at Home stars Jason Segel and Ed Helms and tells the story of a man who is sent off to run an errand for his mother, and this one moment changes his life when he ends up spending the day with his brother. 

This movie has a small cast, which makes it much better than many other comedy dramas, instead of the enormous ensembles you might get for other films. But what makes Jeff, Who Lives at Home a great movie is the chemistry between Jason Segal and Ed Helms, who perfectly capture the relationship between brothers and find new ways to make me laugh each time.

Tag (2018)

Okay, I'll be honest and say that Tag is my favorite movie on this list because of the simple premise – the comedy film is just about a group of guy friends who have had a game of tag going on for decades. 

This film is so goofy, and I love it. Helms is great as Hogan Malloy, but when I tell you he shines with the other actors – Jon Hamm, Jake Johnson, and Jeremy Renner – I mean it. 

Tag is hilarious and heartwarming and will make you want to call your friends and go and play tag yourselves. I mean, there are even controversial tag scenes – and the movie is actually based on a real story.

The Lorax (2012)

The Lorax is based on the Dr. Suess' book of the same name and follows the story of a boy who visits the Once-ler to try and impress a girl with a "real tree" outside of their walled city. 

Okay, so on the surface level, The Lorax isn't the best Illumination film, but you can't deny it isn't a fun time. The reason this has to be on the best Ed Helms movies list is that Helms' character, The Once-ler, has become social media famous in more ways than one. If you're on Tumblr or TikTok, you know the real deal. 

But truthfully, he kills it in this voice role, and his song, "How Bad Can I Be?" is a banger. I stand by that.

Chappaquiddick (2017) 

Chappaquiddick, also known as The Senator, is a political drama that is all about the real-life story of the Chappaquiddick Island, when Ted Kennedy's driving led to the death of the passenger in his car. 

Through most of the films on this list, Ed Helms has shown his comedy acting skills, but I like his role in Chappaquiddick. His role as Joe Gargan was a nice change of pace for the usually comedic actor, and he knocked it out of the park alongside co-stars. If anything, Chappaquiddick makes you want to see Helms in more dramatic roles.

Cedar Rapids (2011) 

Throwing it back to 2011, we have Cedar Rapids. Starring Ed Helms in the lead role, Cedar Rapids is all about a young man who is sent to an insurance convention in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the first time. While he's initially excited for the new opportunity, he is not prepared for what he faces there. 

Cedar Rapids is so funny, and for no reason other than Helms being a great lead character. I do love him in films where he gets to shine with his co-stars, but there's just something about him playing Tim Lippe that makes me smile every time I watch the movie. Not only that, but the scenes with him and John C. Reilly are gold.

Together Together (2021)

Last, we have Together Together, a 2021 film directed by Nikole Beckwith. The film stars Ed Helms and Patti Harrison and tells the story of a young woman who decides to become a surrogate for a lonely man who wishes to start a family of his own – this one partnership changes their lives forever. 

This movie is at its heart a comedy, and has some hilarious moments that will make you snort out your drink. But aside from that, Together Together provides a great story about the relationship that forms from strangers into friends into possibly something more and the connections that build from the most random places. Pair that with an excellent Ed Helms performance, and it's a great addition to this list.

Offerman portrays Richard McDonald and I personally love his role in this movie. It’s times like this where you realize how good Offerman is in dramas, because he really shines - or maybe it’s just the fact that it’s one of the few times I see him without a mustache. Either way, he’s great.

Making It (2018 - Present)

The reunion we’ve been waiting for - no, it’s not the Parks and Recreation official reunion, but we do get to see Nick Offerman and Amy Poehler come together once more as the hosts of Making It, a competition show that puts the ultimate crafters up against each other to compete for a grand prize of $100,000. 

Watching this show, I genuinely can’t think of anyone better to host it other than these two. Not only are Nick Offerman and Amy Poehler great hosts, their chemistry bounces so well off of each other that they make this competition even more enjoyable to watch. It’s no wonder it’s been going on for a couple of years now.

We’re The Millers (2013)

Now this is a hilarious comedy film. We’re the Millers stars a talented ensemble cast following the story of the “Miller” clan, a fake family made up by a pot-dealer in order for him to be able to smuggle drugs into the United States, causing plenty of hilarities to ensue. 

Offerman plays Don Fitzgerald, a DEA agent who ends up becoming friends with the Millers, so you can only imagine how great that must have gone considering the Millers are trying to avoid getting captured by DEA people. However, Offerman is just too nice in his role and creates some hysterical moments that you just can’t miss. While he’s great in drama, comedy is really where he shines.

The Lego Movie Series (2014-2019)

In The Lego Movie and its sequel, we mainly follow Emmet, a normal LEGO man who goes on wild adventures in order to save all of LEGO humanity. 

For both of the official Lego movies, Offerman voices MetalBeard, a Master Builder who has now set his heart on revenge and wants to take on Master Builder in order to get his body back to normal. Watching this film makes me want to see Offerman in more voice roles. I know that he’s done plenty so far, but he’s so great and shows so much emotion just through his voice. Definitely check out The Lego Movie as well as its sequels/spinoffs.

The House Of Tomorrow (2017)

The House of Tomorrow is a bit of a lesser known, independent gem on this list, but that’s even more of a reason to watch it. This drama tells the story of a young man who wishes to change his life and become something different, but everything changes when he meets a punk rocker that introduces him to the beauty of the genre, changing his life forever. 

Offerman stars as Alan Whitcomb, the main fatherly figure in The House of Tomorrow, and personally, I’ve always really enjoyed his performance here. Offerman is really good in his role and I honestly loved his moments with his on-screen son, Alex Wolff, creating great chemistry. The House of Tomorrow follows a coming-of-age plotline, but it's interesting enough that it’ll captivate you right from the start.

Pam & Tommy (2022)

A newer entry on this list, this Hulu miniseries has certainly sparked a lot of conversation. Pam & Tommy is a biographical miniseries that chronicles the crazy love affair of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, and how a private sex tape they filmed on their honeymoon created turmoil when it was sold everywhere. 

The Pam & Tommy cast is so incredibly talented, but oh my God, Offerman has stolen the show for me. We can talk about how great Lily James is as Pamela or Sebastian Stan is as Tommy Lee, but are we going to talk about Nick Offerman as Uncle Miltie? Dude is creepy as heck, conniving, and gross in all the right ways and Offerman did a fantastic job. After this, I for sure want to see him in more serious roles because he rocked this show.

Fargo (Season 2 - 2015)

If you’re looking for a great anthology black comedy series, Fargo is the way to go. Following new cases and new people each season, this amazing FX drama constantly looks at new stories of mysterious disappearances, murders, and much more. 

Nick Offerman actually had a decently big role in the second season of Fargo, which focused on a combination of a cover-up and an investigation of a triple-homicide. Offerman played the only lawyer in the small town, and because of that, he was one of the go-to sources for legal advice - even though the character was often drunk. Offerman played the role perfectly, even for the small amount of time he was on the show. Definitely give it a shot if you haven’t seen it.

Devs (2020)

Ready for another miniseries? Devs is a murder mystery/science-fiction show for the ages, when a young woman decides to investigate into her boyfriend’s death, and how the tech company that they both worked for could be the reason behind it. 

Nick Offerman plays Forest in Devs, the main man who runs the shady tech company, and he received a lot of praise for his performance, including an award nomination for the Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy series for the Critics Choice Awards. If you want a show that you’ll be invested in from the very beginning, check out Devs.

Hearts Beat Loud (2018)

Hearts Beat Loud is a great coming-of-age movie that you should definitely check out. A father, who was a musician, and his daughter, who wants to be a doctor, end up creating a song that becomes a viral success overnight, but even with their success, it might end in them falling apart. 

This film was such an under-the-radar summer movie in 2018, and it still is now, and I don’t know why. This is one of the few roles here where Offerman is one of the leading people and I freaking love him in this movie. He really captures that spirit of someone who just wants to find a way to connect with his daughter, hoping that the one thing they have in common can be the one thing to save them, despite outside forces pulling them apart. Him and Kiersey Clemons shine in this film and their chemistry is truly outstanding.

Have A Good Trip: Adventures In Psychedelics (2020)

In this documentary film from Netflix, Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics combines both comedy and education as Nick Offerman takes us on a journey into the effects of drugs, and how they have impacted the very celebrities that we watch now. 

Is this documentary film a little silly? Of course it is, but really only someone like Nick Offerman could so effortlessly host this film and somehow still make it both funny and intriguing. What makes this movie even more entertaining is all the different appearances from celebrities who tell their own stories of psychedelics, showing that it’s a lot more common than some might believe it to be.

The Kings Of Summer (2013)

Last but not least, we have The Kings of Summer. This independent coming-of-age movie follows a young man who is sick of the way in which his single father controls him, so he sets off into the woods to find his own path in life, changing the course of everything. 

Nick Offerman stars as Frank in The Kings of Summer, the father of the main character, Joe, played by Nick Robinson, and I think it’s one of Offerman's underrated performances. Frank is just so deadpan and the way in which Offerman delivers his scenes are just hilarious. The wonton scene makes me snicker every time, but that doesn’t excuse that he’s also great in his dramatic moments as well, mainly with his scenes with Robinson.

With his appearance set for some new TV shows in the future such as A League of Their Own and The Last Of Us HBO adaptation, I’m sure it won’t be long before we’re adding to this list. But until then, these are some of Offerman’s best projects so far, and no matter what you pick to watch, you’ll have a great time guaranteed.

We’re The Millers (2013)

A middle-aged pot dealer (Jason Sudeikis) enlists his broke stripper neighbor (former Friends cast member Jennifer Aniston), a hapless young introvert (Will Poulter), and an edgy teen runaway (Emma Roberts) to pose as his wife and kids on a trip to Mexico for a huge drug pickup.

Why it is a good Will Poulter movie: Before returning to big budget spectacle, Will Poulter would branch out into funnier and raunchier territory with We’re the Millers - director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s fun twist on the family road trip comedy in which the then 20-year-old actor’s character suffers a tarantula bite in a very awkward place.

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018)

A young, aspiring designer (Fionn Whitehead) attempts to adapt a choose-your-own-adventure novel into a video game, only to find that his own life seems to be its own choose-your-own-adventure story that he is slowly loosing control over, in 1980s England.

Why it is a good Will Poulter movie: You will never know what to expect from how you choose the story to continue in the Emmy-winning interactive movie Black Mirror: Bandersnatch - one of the best Netflix movies also spun-off from on the best Netflix TV shows - but can count on Will Poulter to give a stellar performance as a famed video game programmer whose eccentricities are fueled by dark secrets.

Midsommar (2019)

Hoping to find solace from a devastating tragedy, a young woman (Academy Award nominee Florence Pugh) joins her emotionally distant boyfriend (Jack Reynor) and his classmates at a traditional Swedish festival that proves to be a more bizarre and ominous experience than they were prepared for. 

Why it is a good Will Poulter movie: While Black Mirror: Bandersnatch could be considered Will Poulter’s first foray into horror movies, his most definitive performance as a “Scream King” is in writer and director Ari Aster’s masterfully unnerving sophomore effort Midsommar - one of the best movies on Amazon Prime and one in which he, once again, does a fantastic job playing an insufferably bullish character.

Detroit (2017)

The story of the deadly police raid that led to one of the most infamous race riots in American history in 1967.

Why it is a good Will Poulter movie: Two years before co-starring in Midsommar, Will Poulter and Jack Reynor played two police officers who participated in the horrifying true events depicted in Detroit - another stunningly intense drama from writer Mark Boal and director Kathryn Bigelow, in which Poulter gives another sinister performance.

The Revenant (2015)

A frontiersman (Leonardo DiCaprio) defies death in order to exact revenge on a member of his hunting crew (Tom Hardy) who killed his son and left him for dead after suffering a horrifying bear attack.

Why it is a good Will Poulter movie: Will Poulter was thankfully given a chance to be a more sympathetic character in The Revenant - another intense, yet visually engrossing, retelling of an (allegedly) true story that earned director Alejandro González Iñarritu his fourth Oscar and star Leonardo DiCaprio his first.

War Machine (2017)

A seasoned U.S. military general (Brad Pitt) assigned to “clean” things up and exit Afghanistan after eight years of war is instead more interested in winning the fight.

Why it is a good Will Poulter movie: Will Poulter appears as an ambitious American soldier in some of the more memorably intense moments from the Netflix original film War Machine, which is an otherwise absurdist satire that explores when enough really is enough when it comes to war.

When it comes to certain stars that I can always rely on to make me laugh, one of them that I always think about is Jason Sudeikis. Horrible Bosses (HBO Max)

In this hilarious comedy, Horrible Bosses stars three men who are agonized constantly at their places of work by their horrible bosses, hence the title. So, the three of them decide to murder their respective bosses.

Out of all the movies Jason Sudeikis has starred in, this is hands down one of his funniest. The plot is wacky and full of hysterical moments, but the cast is really where this one shines the most. Besides Jason Sudeikis, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day, and Ozark cast member, Jason Bateman, have amazing chemistry together as the three main men. And their bosses - played by Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, and Kevin Spacey - are the perfect picks and perform their roles. It’s such a great film and definitely worth the time to watch if you haven’t seen it already.

The Last Man On Earth (Hulu)

Created by Will Forte, this Fox original series, titled The Last Man on Earth, follows Phil Miller, a man who seems to be the only human survivor after a deadly virus had swept the planet. When he thinks that all hope is lost and that he will find no one else, he sees smoke in the distance - a sign of life.

Jason Sudeikis plays Mike Miller as a recurring character in The Last Man on Earth, Phil’s brother in the show, and he’s wonderful in his role. Besides him, The Last Man on Earth cast is filled with plenty of talent, and a lot of laughs. I think what I love the most about it, as someone who enjoys post-apocalyptic shows like The Walking Dead, is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. Yes, the world has ended, but these people are making the best of it and they’re laughing their way through it - and so are we.

We’re The Millers (HBO Max)

In this crime comedy film, We’re the Millers tells the story of a small-time pot dealer who somehow convinces his neighbors to help him by pretending to be his family so he can smuggle drugs from Mexico into the U.S.

Again, Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston have amazing chemistry. We didn’t see them as much together in Horrible Bosses, but we get that in We’re the Millers and I’m surprised they haven’t been in more films together. They work together so well and create some truly funny moments. Not only that, but both Emma Roberts and Will Poulter add a certain charm to the cast, rounding it out to one dysfunctional fake-family road trip. It’s definitely extremely funny.

Saturday Night Live (Hulu)

In this ongoing primetime sketch series, Saturday Night Live features several cast members each week creating funny skits based on pop culture, current politics or events, and several other factors.

For a time, Jason Sudeikis was both a writer and a cast member on the series, from 2005-2013. One of his biggest roles that he portrayed was politician Mitt Romney, but he played many others during his time, including Joe Biden. He really blew up after his time on the show, becoming the star he is now, but I always like to look back and see where he started, especially with some of his hilarious sketches.

Driven (Starz)

In this biographical comedy, Driven tells the story of a man who is busted by the FBI when he arrives in the United States with a large sum of cocaine, alongside his wife and two sons. In order to protect his family from prison, he agrees to become an informant, and the FBI relocates him and his family out to San Diego.

Jason Sudeikis really rocks it in his role as Jim Hoffman, creating a really intriguing yet memorable comedic character that has great chemistry with the rest of this family. Another part that I really enjoyed about this film is the dynamic that Jason Sudeikis has with Judy Greer, who plays his wife, Ellen Hoffman. The two of them work off of each other in great ways and really creates an enjoyable comedy with a bit of a crime twist. Plus, Lee Pace as John DeLorean is killer and takes the cake for this fun movie.

Sleeping With Other People (AMC+)

In this romantic comedy, Sleeping with Other People tells the story of two strangers who had a one-night stand in college, and meet by chance twelve years later, and discover that they have the same problem - they can't maintain a relationship whatsoever.

Let me just say that this is another case where Jason Sudeikis needs to be in more movies with other amazing stars, because he and Alison Brie, who plays his love interest in this film, work perfectly together. Their love story is so hysterically funny and yet so wholesome that you’ll find yourself smiling so brightly as it progresses. It deserves so much more praise than it’s gotten and honestly, needs to be seen by way more people.

30 Rock (Peacock)

Created by Tina Fey, 30 Rock tells the story of a head writer as a fictional live sketch comedy series (based on Saturday Night Live), covering the constant struggles that she faces, and the people she comes across on a daily basis.

First off, 30 Rock is just a funny show and you should watch it regardless of Jason Sudeikis recurring in it. The 30 Rock cast is hysterical, and the story, while it has its funny moments, is also full of heart and a lot of great stories that will capture anyone’s interest. Even so, Jason Sudeikis is awesome in his role as Floyd, and his chemistry with Tina Fey is spot-on. Definitely one of the better recurring cast members on the show, in my opinion.

Booksmart (Hulu)

In this critically-acclaimed coming-of-age comedy, Booksmart follows two graduating high schoolers who make it their mission to break the rules and party on their last day of classes.

I absolutely love Booksmart. Not only is Jason Sudeikis fantastic in his role as the principal of their school, the rest of the Booksmart cast is full of talent. Both Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever shine in their leading roles, and the rest of the cast, including Lisa Kudrow, Jessica Williams, Will Forte and more, are perfect and really move the film along. If coming-of-age comedies are ones you enjoy a lot of, Booksmart is the film for you to watch.

Kodachrome (Netflix)

Kodachrome is a Netflix original film about a man who travels across the country with his terminally sick father and his nurse/assistant to one of the last shops that sell Kodachrome film because his father has several rolls that he wants to process before he dies.

I feel like Jason Sudeikis is always known for his comedic roles - as he should, because the man is hilarious - but we also need to remember that he is very talented in dramatic roles as well, if not more. The film has its funny moments, but Sudeikis truly shines in this role, showing his abilities as an actor, pulling at your heartstrings throughout the whole entire film. His role is only amplified by the amazing performances from both his co-stars, Elizabeth Olsen and Ed Harris, creating a truly entertaining comedy-drama experience. It’s honestly one of the best movies on Netflix, in my opinion.

Ted Lasso (Apple TV+)

You didn’t think I’d have this list without good ol’ Ted Lasso, did you? Based on a series of promotional videos from several years ago, the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso follows the titular character as he travels across the world from America to England to coach a football team, where he only coached American football back home. Now, it’s up to him to bring Richmond back, and get it a championship somehow.

There’s a reason why Jason Sudeikis has been nominated for numerous awards (and won a good amount of them) for his performance and involvement in this show. He’s electric, creating this fun-loving, goofy, optimistic coach with his own problems that he tries so hard to keep hidden through his constant attempts to make people laugh. I mean, how can you not love Ted Lasso? While I do love the Ted Lasso cast and everyone else there, Sudeikis is the shining star, and plays the role perfectly.

From films to television, Jason Sudeikis has done so much in the film industry, and I can’t wait to see what he does next. For now, I’ll be happy watching him on Ted Lasso with a smile on my face.

Studios used to weigh the pros and cons before getting on with a sequel to a successful film. The question was, is there a story there? And often, there wouldn’t be, which was why a sequel would be expected, but rarer. But in 2014, franchises are all studios have, and every original film is a chance to launch a couple of sequels that they might be able to promote to audiences based not on demand, but familiarity (I MEAN GEEZ). And now, we’re getting two more, so deal with it, sequel-haters.

We’re The Millers banked a somewhat-improbable $269 million worldwide last year, ruling the late summer weeks on a budget of only $37 million. It doesn’t seem like the most sequel-ready concept, and yet THR confirms that Adam Sztykiel has been hired to pen the next installment for New Line. No deals are in place for the cast to return, although they’re expected to be reunited as fictional family the Millers, a phony clan assembled to mask the particulars of a drug deal. Also returning will be director Rawson Mitchell Thurber, the man who had previously helmed Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. Sztykiel’s most notable credits are as one of three writers on Patrick Dempsey rom-com Made Of Honor and one of four scribes on Due Date. Holy crap, it took seven combined people to write those movies.

Meanwhile, we haven’t even seen The Equalizer yet, but some have, and they suggest a sequel is a good idea. The highest test scores for an R-rated movie in the history of Sony have led the studio to retain Richard Wenk, the writer of the first film, for a second go-round according to The Wrap. The Equalizer, based on the classic television series, is hitting theaters on September 26th, but by then Wenk will have a full lineup of stories and characters to select from for the next go-round.

The one surprise is that Denzel Washington is not yet signed for a sequel, and he’s gonna be pricey. It’s hard to believe he got involved in this project when there was no sequel clause: Washington doesn’t really do franchises, but The Equalizer ran for four seasons in the mid-eighties, as retired intelligence officer Robert McCall (then played by Edward Woodward) was your man to call to get you out of a fix. There’s plenty of material for a series of films, and Washington is one of the industry’s most dependable leading actors. Wenk, meanwhile, is a red-meat action guy: his previous credits include 16 Blocks, The Mechanic and The Expendables 2. Antoine Fuqua’s The Equalizer, which co-stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Melissa Leo, Bill Pullman, Haley Bennett, David Harbour and Marton Csokas, will hit theaters this fall, when you can determine if it’s got sequel potential, or not.

R-rated comedies are turning some major profits these days. This summer’s We’re the Millers was made on a $37 million budget and ended up turning a profit of over $238 million when including world wide numbers. If you have been waiting to catch the home entertainment release of We’re the Millers, you won’t have too much longer to wait. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is bringing the film onto Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital on November 19.

The film follows David (Jason Sudeikis), a low level drug dealer who, through a comedy of errors, ends up owing money to his boss. To pay back the debt, David hatches a scheme to smuggle quite a bit of marijuana back from Mexico. To bring the drugs back unobtrusively, he hires a crew of random people to fake being his family, including a stripper named Rose (Jennifer Aniston), a runaway named Casey (Emma Roberts) and David’s neighbor, Kenny (Will Poulter). Obviously, it can be pretty difficult to fake being a part of a family unit, and in the case of the Millers, shenanigans ensue. Luckily, some of those shenanigans involve Parks and Rec actor Nick “I call this turf and turf” Offerman.

The Blu-ray copy of the flick will come with an extended cut of the film, which means it may be worth paying a few extras dollars to nab the movie in HD. Note this is an extended cut rather than an unrated cut, so it sounds as if there will be several comedic scenes added rather than the random flashes of nudity typically favored by unrated cuts, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see to officially find out. According to the studio, the extended cut will run for 119 minutes while the theatrical edition is only 110 minutes, so it looks like we'll be getting nine minutes of extra footage, and we'll let you know as soon as we know what sort of footage that will entail.

In addition to the extended footage the release will offer, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is offering a slew of bonus features, including some of the usual suspects with comedy releases, like outtakes and a gag reel. I actually really enjoy watching comedians ad lib in these sorts of segments, but if that isn’t your thing, you can always check out some of the actual featurettes the set will offer, as well. There was a lot of new movies demanding attention this weekend, and the love from audiences was spread pretty thin.

Number one went to Elysium, banking just $30 million. That's a let down for director Neill Blomkamp whose last rated R sci-fi film (and his first every feature film as well), District 9 managed a $37 million opening in 2009, and that was without big names like Damon and Foster on the billing.

Raunch-com We're The Millers took second place with $26 million, bringing its total since opening earlier this week to $38 million, putting it solidly in the black compared with its $37 million production budget.

Disney Animation Studio's first attempt at making a Pixar spin-off fell flat. Planes, a limp and poorly received effort by Disney to capitolize on its sister studio's Cars franchise, opened in 3rd place with just $22 million. The weak debut not only falls short by Pixar opening standards, it's a low ball for Disney as well, whose recent animated features like Wreck-It Ralph and Tangled opened nearer to $50 million.

The final new comer this weekend, sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. had a debut that might well be the final nail in the franchise's coffin. After the first entry Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief had a dubious run with just $226 million world-wide, doubts of a second were tossed around. Sea of Monsters had an opening of just $14 million, with only $33 million in world-wide sales to date against its $90 million budget. Not exactly a vote of olypmic proportions.

Bunch of movies on the Rotten slate this week, which means we shouldn’t waste any time getting down to business. This time we’ll take a trip to Elysium, sun some drugs with the Millers, fly a bunch of animated planes and touch base with Percy Jackson again.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at what This Rotten Week has to offer.

Elysium

As I sit in my office (bedroom) writing this, I do so listening to the electronic dance pop sounds of 103.5 KTU and deafening whirr of a circular saw coming from my middle-aged, chain-smoking neighbor who’s out front of his place fixing his front door at 8:30 AM on a summer Sunday. So yeah, Elysium doesn’t sound so f@#$ing bad right now.

And while I don’t picture myself the Matt Damon-type, retrofitted with an exoskeleton and packing a futuristic boom-boom device, stalking across the street to “silence” Mr. Fix-it and busting ass for Eden posthaste, there is something to be said for creating a little Utopian getaway out in space. If my neighborhood is any indication, Earth is going to hell in a handbasket sooner than later.

Directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9-90%), Elysium posits what would happen if Earth became a planetary-sized ghetto while the rich folks look down on us nobodies from their lofty perch in the sky. Honestly, it appears more than a little bit heavy-handed. Where Blomkamp’s first movie explored the cultural tension and atrocities of apartheid through the lens of aliens in South Africa with a fairly deft and entertaining hand, this film looks to bludgeon the issues of universal health care and immigration reform over the viewers’ heads. (Note: this has nothing to do with my own views on these subjects, I’m a fairly liberal dude. I just don’t like being force fed policy reform through movies.)

Early reviews are a decidedly mixed bag, with some appreciating the look and feel of the flick, while other were put off by the overt messages of liberal reform. I think this probably depends how a critic walked into the theater. What kind of policy baggage they carry with them. Because of this, the reviews will continue to trend toward the middle. And until we all find our way to Shangri-La, I’ll continue sitting here enjoying the suicide-inducing din of suburban sprawl gone awry (maybe that can be Blomkamp’s next film). The Rotten Watch for Elysium is 49%

Way back in the heyday of 2010, this column was born out of a need for readers to argue the gravity and weight of Tomatometer scores for upcoming movies. That first column, and attempt at predicting Rotten Tomato scores, included Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (Predicted: 69% Actual: 49%). Since then I’ve grown as a person, lover and prognosticator. Now, more than three years later, I have a chance to make amends on that original, slightly misguided prediction.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (I guess he dumped the Olympians) is the sequel and part of the insanely popular series by Rick Riordan who has made enough money writing these books that he could probably build a Mount Olympus of his own. It follows the adventures of a few mediocre young adult actors as they work their way through a bland script heavy on average-looking special effects. Will they find the Golden Fleece in the Bermuda Triangle? Will they stop the giant bull-looking robot thing that comes to their home? Will these actors and actresses be out of Hollywood in the next seven years? I’m answering yes, yes, looking likely to those three questions.

Thor Freudenthal’s other work (Diary of a Wimpy Kid-53%, Hotel for Dogs-46%) hovers right in that mediocre range of “enjoyable to people under thirteen years old, unwatchable to everyone else.” Successful careers have been made on much, much less. This flick looks no different. It’ll appeal to its demographic and no one else. That’ll probably mean a nice box office draw but a lower Tomatometer score. I just can’t imagine a majority of critics walking out of the theater happy with the product. Second time’s a charm on Percy Jackson. I’m nailing this score. The Rotten Watch for Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is 36%

How soon until the premise for this movie is completely dated? In a couple of years, when we are all buying our pot from the produce aisle in the local ShopRite, the idea of shuttling a makeshift family across the Mexican border in a RV stacked to the ceiling with bricks of marijuana will seem laughable right? Can’t you just pick this stuff up with way less hassle in Denver right now? I’m no drug buff, but seems like a needless risk to run up against DEA patrols because of pot. But until we can use coupons to buy our stuff, Jason Sudeikis sees it reasonable to pack a stripper (Jennifer Aniston), naive teenage boy (Will Poulter) and a hoodlum (Emma Roberts) into the Winnebago and get a shipment for a narcissistic millionaire (Ed Helms).

The director with the preppiest name of all time, Rawson Marshall Thurber helms this flick after guiding a success in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (70%), a flop with Mysteries of Pittsburgh (12%) and my personal favorite commercial of all time Terry Tate: Office Linebacker. (If you haven’t seen this before, enjoy three plus minutes of commercial perfection.)

The trailer contains its fair share of laughs (mostly from Poulter) and the cast is strong, but I’m not seeing enough here to predict a critical success. I like my comedy trailers to blow me out of the funny water and I’m not sure if this one does the trick. It appears to rely on some hokey plot devices (Aniston has to strip to prove herself, Roberts is over-the-top delinquent, etc) and I can imagine a scenario where this falls very flat. That being said, I’m going to hedge a bit mostly because of the cast. I was wrong with another Sudeikis/ Aniston raunchy comedy Horrible Bosses (Predicted: 44% Actual: 69%) which has me worried about reading too much into the trailer. If you think I’m confused, congrats, you’re right. I don’t think I’d feel great about this prediction no matter what. The Rotten Watch for We’re the Millers is 52%

Wondering what is happening in skies above the world of Pixar’s Cars? Me neither. But prepare yourself for the answer anyway. Planes deals with Dusty Crophopper and his fear of heights as he prepares to go from lowly farm plane to a celebrated flying racer. All while soaring above Lightning McQueen, Mater and company.

DisneyToon Studios typically releases direct-to-video flicks including Little Rotten Week’s absolute favorite mind-numbing fare, the Tinker Bell movies. (Sidenote: I know more about the Fairies of Pixie Hollow than any grown adult who doesn’t work for Disney should.) This flick was supposed to go that route until Disney saw the final product and thought it could take a run in theaters.

Director Klay Hall has his work hit the big screen for the first time after working on King of the Hill, Father of the Pride and of course the much ballyhooed Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure. I suppose it’s a feather in his cap that the studio saw enough to change its original plan and put it out for the masses. I don’t think it ends up with overwhelmingly positive reviews considering its original roadmap, but I have a feeling critics are pleasantly surprised with the product. Recapping last week:

What a week for the Rotten Watch! Two movies with predictions within a combined nine percent. That’s what I’m talking about. First off, 2 Guns (Predicted: 50% Actual: 58%) came just within the success zone. I suspected this would be a popcorn-y action flick carried by the two stars, who have a way of elevating very below average material. Sean says as much in his review. That Washington and Wahlberg are a strong pairing even saying, “...the duo together are the valuable glue that often holds 2 Guns together at its rough seams.” Like I said last week, I can imagine a scenario where this becomes standard Saturday evening basic cable rerun watching for the Dougster.

Meanwhile, Smurfs 2 (Predicted: 13% Actual: 12%) sucked as expected. Not much else to say here about these kinds of pieces of trash. They’re made for kids and the intellectually deficient. (That’s the demo written up in the studio notes.). But a terrible movie made for a great prediction. There’s a chance this one ends up right on the money with a few more reviews.

Next time around, This Rotten Week takes a little vacation. The Rotten family and I are heading out of town for a few weeks and I’ll be taking a two week break from the column. There is an outside chance I will be able to post some predictions (we will have limited access to Internet), but if not assume all of my guesses would have been directly on the money. Am I the only person who thought that the above We’re the Millers trailer was worlds better than the first red band trailer? Granted, the bulk of that opinion rests on the fact that they refrained from showing us the swollen horror of Kenny’s (Will Poulter) spider-bitten testicles. That kind of omission goes a long way sometimes.

The trailer comes to us from Warner Bros., and features both an intro and an outro from stars Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis, who happens to be rocking the mustache of someone who drives large white windowless vans around playgrounds. After they offer a few of their own expletives, the trailer starts, and we’re transported into the world of this year’s most dysfunctional fake family. Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” is playing to really nail the multiple identity plotline on the head.

I get put off by trailers that begin with an entire scene from the film shown out of context, and the one seen here isn’t even especially amusing, only serving to lead into the trailer’s first use of the f-word. I definitely want this film to be good, because zany Hollywood comedies nearly never live up to their potential. (The Watch, I’m glaring at you.) But films led by Sudeikis or Aniston are really hit-or-miss, and watching the two of joke about who will blow Luis Guzmán’s cop to get out of trouble isn’t very encouraging. I keep having to check IMDb to make sure the Farrelly brothers didn’t make this.

That said, you show me something as dark as Kathryn Hahn’s character thinking a live baby was thrown onto the hard surface of a highway while traffic is passing, and I start chuckling. There’s no accounting for taste, and I think enough of this film will amuse me that I won’t walk away with a bad taste in my mouth. (Not from Luis Guzmán, I swear.) If nothing else, it will be a good litmus test for the R-rated comedic skills of Emma Roberts, who is transferring nicely from harmless fluff like Nancy Drew to more adult dramatic roles, and Will Poulter, who absolutely killed it in 2007’s Son of Rambow. I’m perfectly comfortable with most of the movie passing without Poulter’s balls getting bitten. Although if that means more Scott Adsit as a doctor, I’m okay with it.

This trailer doesn’t do a good job of delivering the plot, which sees this foursome coming together to split $100,000 for smuggling a large amount of pot for Ed Helms. Gotta promote those wacky family occurrences though, like having Aniston stripped down and dancing beneath a shower of water. The film also stars Nick Offerman, who should have done the stripper scene in my opinion, Tomer Sisley, Molly Quinn and Thomas Lennon. It comes out next Wednesday on August 7, obviously trying to smuggle all the money it can before Elysium and Disney’s Planes open on Friday. This week sees the release of the hilarious, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg-directed apocalyptic comedy This Is The End, but don't think that spells the end for R-rated summer comedies in 2013. Previewed in late May when both the red and green band trailers arrived online, director Rawson Marshall Thurber's pot comedy We're The Millers looks like it could be a late-summer hit, and looks as though it's filled with a lot of laughs. The cast for the film is terrific, with Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston headlining, and comedians like Ed Helms, Nick Offerman, and Katheryn Hahn playing supporting roles, but today we get two character posters for the younger actors in the movie.

The We're The Millers official Facebook page has launched two new one-sheets for the new comedy highlighting stars Emma Roberts and Will Poulter. In the film, Sudeikis stars as a low-level pot dealer who runs into money issues and hesitantly agrees to smuggle some marijuana across the Mexico border into America. In order to pull off the job he decides to rent and RV and hire a woman and two young people to play his children. As you can see in both of these new posters, Roberts and Poulter will be playing the "kids" in this scenario, and seem to have very different attitudes.

Presumably this is just the start of a week-long release of new character posters, so in the next couple of days expect to hear even more about We're The Millers. And considering the comedy is being put out by Warner Bros. - the same studio releasing Man of Steel - I wouldn't be too surprised if we saw a new trailer this week as well.

When I attended CinemaCon in Las Vegas last month, one of the biggest surprises of all of the panels was the upcoming pot comedy We're The Millers. The footage shown was an extended R-rated trailer that showcased both hilariously vulgar bits and funny banter between characters. Even better, the comedy seems to translate in both green and red band formats.

Warner Bros. has debuted two versions of the first trailer for the new comedy, and while the trailer above is the green band below you can watch the one meant for more mature audiences, courtesy of Warner Bros. UK. The squeamish should be warned: the preview features one truly horrible spider bite.

Directed by Dodgeball's Rawson Marshall Thurber, We're The Millers stars Jason Sudeikis as David Burke, a low-level pot dealer who gets in serious trouble when he is jumped by a group of punks who steal his money and his stash. Desperate to pay off his supplier (Ed Helms), David is forced to take a job transporting what he is told is just a tiny bit of marijuana across the Mexico/U.S. border. To do so he gets the brilliant idea to create a fake family going on vacation in an RV...but things don't go exactly as planned. Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, and Will Poulter play David's fake wife, daughter and son, respectively, and as you saw in both trailers Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn make appearances as some kinky fellow travelers.

We're The Millers hits theaters later this summer on August 9th.

Thus far CinemaCon has largely delivered on presenting footage from films that will be out in the next couple of months. Between both Paramount and Universal, highlights have included reels from films like Star Trek Into Darkness, World War Z, Fast & Furious 6, and R.I.P.D., all movies set to come out in either May, June or July. But for their presentation, Warner Bros. looked much deeper into their 2013 slate.

While tonight’s presentation from WB did include trailers from Man of Steel, The Hangover Part III, The Conjuring and The Great Gatsby, it was the footage that was shown from August and beyond that made it the most interesting one we’ve seen so far. 300: Rise of An Empire

Man of Steel isn’t the only film on Warner Bros. slate with a Zack Snyder connection. In late summer we will be seeing the sequel to the 2006 blockbuster 300 in the form of director Noam Murro’s 300: Rise of an Empire, and while we recently got to see the first few stills from the movie pop up online, as well as the first poster, tonight the studio showed off the first bit of footage to the crowds at CinemaCon.

Admittedly it’s hard to give a shot-by-shot description, as there was a great deal of action and many quick cuts, the reel did have plenty to offer visually. For starters, it’s immediately clear that Murro has worked to match the aesthetic of Snyder’s original, with a dark and gritty feel matched with scenes of intensity and battle. The footage also balanced a lot of its violence – of which there was plenty – with a good amount of sex and sensuality (again, similar to the first movie). It would also seem that the film will be giving us a bit of backstory about Xerxes, the character played by Rodrigo Santoro, as we see him both as the "living god" with a shaved head and jewelry, as well as with a full head of hair and a beard, presumably before he ascended to the throne. Given all of the promotional materials we’ve been seeing of late as well as the August 2nd release date, we can probably expect the first trailer to arrive soon.

We’re The Millers

Beyond The Hangover Part III, one of the biggest comedies that Warner Bros. has coming up in 2013 is director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s We’re The Millers, starring Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, and Will Poulter. The film centers on a small time pot dealer (Sudeikis) who is hired by his boss to smuggle a shipment of marijuana from Mexico into the States, and in order to not look suspicious hires a stripper (Aniston) and two random teens (Roberts and Poulter) to pretend to be his family.

The trailer was filled with some huge laughs and was easily one of the highlights of the entire presentation. One of the biggest things to look forward to appears to be the supporting roles played by some of the funniest actors in Hollywood today, including Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn (who play a couple that wants to "swing" with Sudeikis and Aniston’s character) and Ed Helms (who plays Sudekis’ boss, a rich man who owns a shark-eating orca whale). The comedy is extremely raunchy and the movie will certainly be R-rated, as evidenced by a scene in which Poulter’s character is bit on the testicle and sees it swell up to a gargantuan, repulsively disgusting size. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait very long to see it, as the movie will be in theaters on August 9th. Don’t be surprised to see a Red band trailer pop up in the next few weeks.

Gravity

We’ve been waiting a very long time for Gravity, the new film from director Alfonso Cuaron, and with the film finally landing a release date back in January it was about time that we got to see some footage. In the movie Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star as astronauts working on an orbiting satellite who meet tragedy when an debris hits the vessel and leaves them stranded out in space.

While not a great deal of the movie was on display, mostly showing the explosion on the satellite that sets up the story, what can be said for the preview is that the film looks incredibly impressive visually. It began with a shot of the Earth 372 miles above the surface and immediately registered as realistic, which only added to the drama when the satellite is hit and Bullock’s character is sent sprawling. Because the film won’t be in theaters until October it may be a little while before we get to see a trailer, but hopefully it will arrive sooner rather than later.

Prisoners

One of the biggest surprises of the presentation was the delivery of footage from Prisoners, the new drama from the acclaimed director Incendies, Denis Villeneuve. The film begins as two families (the couples played by Hugh Jackman and Maria Bello and Terrence Howard and Viola Davis) gather together for Thanksgiving, but are struck by tragedy when their respective daughters go missing after being spotted playing by an RV parked on the street. A big city detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) is called in to investigate the case, however, Jackman’s character, believing the police to be moving too slowly, decides to take matters into his own hands and get the little girls back.

The movie seems to be taking aim at this year’s award season, with a prime September 20th release date already set, and from the looks of the footage alone it looks like it should have the drama and the performances to back it up. After the initial set up is shown, featuring a great tonal shift from fun family gathering to thrilling search for the girls, the reel had two heavily dramatic sequences that paired Bello and Jackman with Gyllenhaal, respectively. Bello’s scene has a tremendous emotional authenticity to it, as she asks the detective about his record solving cases and tearfully asks if he has any children of his own – a question that is met with a hard silence. By contrast, what makes Jackman’s scene so striking is the emotional weight of his anger. Set six days after the kidnapping, as the two men meet in a car to talk about the case, it’s clear that the father character is deeply disturbed by the lack of forward motion on the case and has apparently already gone out to conduct his own investigation, assaulting a possible witness/suspect in the process. The capper to the footage, however, was the eerie final shot, which featured an aerial shot of an RV peacefully driving down an open stretch of road. My recommendation? Keep an eye out for Prisoners.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

While The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is certainly the biggest movie that Warner Bros. has coming out at the end of the year, unfortunately they didn’t present any new footage from the film to the CinemaCon audience. Instead, Peter Jackson submitted a video noting that he and the rest of the crew are hard at work putting the sequel together and confirmed that Orlando Bloom’s Legolas will be in the movie along with Bard, the character from the book played by Luke Evans; Smaug the dragon, as voiced by Star Trek Into Darkness’ Benedict Cumberbatch; and Tauriel, the elf played by Evangeline Lilly, who is an original character created specifically for the movies.

Warner Bros. has some huge movies coming out next year, including titles like Man of Steel, Pacific Rim, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and while dates for those titles are probably pretty set in stone, the studio has been doing some moving and shaking with four of their other films due out in 2013.

Warner Bros. has notified Box Office Mojo that the new comedies We’re The Millers and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and the thriller Prisoners have been given places on the schedule, while James Wan’s The Conjuring has been shifted.

First up we have We’re The Millers, a pot comedy that has been stuck in development hell for years, but is now finally rolling with Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston. With cameras now rolling, the studio has decided to place the movie on August 9, 2013, where it will take the audience that decides not to go see the new remake of Robocop.

On the other side of the calendar will be Burt Wonderstone, which is the new magician comedy starring Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, Steve Buscemi and Olivia Wilde. WB is making a daring move with the film by putting it up against not only the new adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie, but also the Miles Teller comedy 21 and Over, which could take away some of the audience.

Looking forward to Prisoners, it would seem that the studio has some confidence in the project because they have announced it or September 20, 2013: the opening of Oscar season. The thriller, which sees Hugh Jackman go up against a big city cop while on the search for his kidnapped friend and daughter, will find opening weekend competition against Rush, the racing drama from director Ron Howard.

And last but not least we have The Conjuring, Wan’s follow-up to Insidious, and I have some bad news and good news for fans. The bad is that you’ll have to wait an extra six months to see the new movie, but the good is that it’s moving could be a good sign for the film’s quality. Warners has moved the project from its original date on January 25, 2013 (the end of a month where studios like to dump all their less-than-great stuff), to July 19, 2013, the heart of blockbuster season. It now faces Universal’s R.I.P.D. with Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges; as well as Fox’s animated adventure film Turbo.

Being the star of The Office, Ed Helms has to choose his movie projects wisely. There's a limited amount of time he has between seasons of the NBC comedy and it's important that he makes them count. When I spoke with Helms earlier this year he told me that there are three factors that go into his selection process: "“Is this an exciting story that I want to be a part of? Are these people that I want to work with? And can I fit it into my schedule?” It seems that They Came Together and We're The Millers have fit the bill.

Deadline reports that Helms is now attached for parts in both films. The former title is the new movie from director David Wain and is based on a script he co-wrote with Michael Showalter. The film stars Amy Poehler - who last worked with Wain on Wet Hot American Summer - as the owner of a small business that starts to see her company fail when a major corporation moves to town. Paul Rudd will be playing the owner of the conglomerate and Helms will be playing Poehler's character's love interest, an accountant named Eggbert. Wain and Rudd reteamed just this year with the comedy Wanderlust.

We're The Millers is a different kind of story and also has a much smaller part for Helms. The movie, which has been in development for years now and will be directed by Rawson Thurber, is about an aging pot dealer (Jason Sudekis) who plans to retire after one last score that involves moving 1,400 pounds of marijuana from Mexico to the United States. The way he does this is by hiring a fake family that includes Jennifer Aniston as his fake wife. Helms will play a character named Brian who is Sudekis' boss and "who may be hiding something nefarious and shady."

While no start date is given for We're The Millers, They Came Together will start filming this July before The Office begins production on July 30th. Helms will also be filming The Hangover: Part III this September.

After years and years of being stuck in awful development hell, We're The Millers might actually get moving. While Steve Buscemi and Will Arnett were previously attached to star in the project when it wasn't moving, it was given new life when Rawson Thurber was brought in to direct. Since then Jason Bateman has been named as part of the movie, but apparently that's not happening either because they've found someone else instead.

THR has learned that Jason Sudekis and Jennifer Aniston are now in talks to play the male and female leads in We're The Millers. The story is about a low ranking drug dealer who makes himself a fake family so that he can run 1,400 pounds of marijuana across the border from Mexico into the US. The first version of the script was written by Steve Faber and Bob Fisher, the duo that scripted Wedding Crashers, however, it's gone through multiple hands since. The project first started going through the system in 2002.

What's interesting about this story is that all of it hinges on Jennifer Aniston's involvement. Apparently she has been holding on to the script for weeks, but talks have not produced a contract as of yet. The trade says that New Line will either greenlight the film or shelve it again based on Aniston's decision. Jason Sudekis and Aniston previously worked together with the studio on last summer's surprise hit Horrible Bosses (which also had Jason Bateman). Perhaps she enjoyed working with him enough that this could be seen as a way of sweetening the pot.

We're The Millers is one of those great sounding movies that has spent far, far too long in development hell. First developed back in 2002, the project had both Steve Buscemi and Will Arnett attached in the lead role at some point, but when it never ended up going anywhere they fell off. Back in May the project was given new life and now the film has lined up its new lead.

According to Pajiba, Arnett's Arrested Development co-star Jason Bateman has signed on to star in the stoner comedy, which is being backed by New Line. The project is being headed up by Rawson Thurber, who just yesterday landed a gig rewriting an adaptation of The Umbrella Academy for Universal. In the film Bateman will play a low-level middle-aged pot dealer who decides that it's time for retirement. Needing one last job to build his nest egg, he agrees to travel to Mexico and smuggle 1,400 pounds of marijuana across the border. In order to make the job work, he buys a large RV and hires people from around the neighborhood to pretend to be his family. The most recent version of the script was written by John Morris and Sean Anders, whose previous works include Hot Tub Time Machine, Mr. Popper's Penguins, and Sex Drive.

I've actually been following this project since it was first announced and I feel like my vision of the movie changes with each new actor. One has to imagine that the film would be much different with Buscemi or Arnett as the lead, but Bateman sounds like it could be a great choice. Pajiba describes the lead as having, "a dry sense of humor, and, in a very funny way, the character is mean," which would be a change of pace for the actor, but also welcomed. Bateman is having a pretty solid year thus far, with both Paul and Horrible Bosses playing to positive reviews and The Change Up due out next month. Let's see if he can keep it going.
