Fast Forever: Release Date And Other Things We Know So Far

It has been a quarter-century since audiences around the world were first introduced to the Fast & Furious movies, their unforgettable characters, and increasingly intense and over-the-top antics. In a couple of years, the massively successful franchise will have its final race (when it comes to the main series) when Fast Forever drifts onto the big screen.

The long-in-the-works franchise-capper, which will hopefully answer some lingering questions from the Fast X ending back in 2023, is something that many of us have been looking forward to for a long time. That being said, if you want to learn more about what’s been happening with Fast Forever (formerly known as Fast 11, Fast & Furious 11, or Fast X-2), fasten your seatbelts, because we’ve got a lot to cover, one quarter-mile at a time.

What Is Fast Forever Release Date?

The Fast Forever release date has been set for March 17, 2028. Wait, wasn’t this movie supposed to come out much earlier than that? Sort of. Back in 2024, director Louis Leterrier spoke at Collider’s “Directors on Directing” panel, where he teased the movie would land on the 25th anniversary of 2001’s The Fast and the Furious, meaning it would drop on the 2026 movie schedule. A lot has changed since then. While it’s a bummer we have to wait so long, at least we have an actual release date this time…

Vin Diesel WIll Once Again Lead The Fast And Furious 11 Cast

No surprise here, but Vin Diesel will once again be back for Fast Forever, making 2003’s 2 Fast 2 Furious the only mainline movie in the franchise to not feature Dom Toretto in some shape or form (remember, he had a cameo in the Tokyo Drift post-credits scene).

However, it’s a different story for other members of the cast, as it has yet to be revealed who will and won’t be in the upcoming movie. But if those Fast X post-credit scenes are any indication of the franchise’s future, it seems likely we'll be seeing Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Gal Gadot’s Gisele Yashar, two characters fans long thought they’d never see again after the former said he was done with the franchise and the latter’s character died in Fast & Furious 6. But, we'll have to wait to see who is officially confirmed.

It’s also hard to imagine the franchise ending without most, if not all, of the major players showing up for one final outing. That said, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Letty, Roman, Ramsey, Tej, or Mia getting in on the action before it’s all said and done. However, we’ll have to wait and see…

Fast Forever Will ‘Bring It Back Home,’ Implying A Return To Its Roots

The Fast and Furious franchise has taken audiences to locations all over the planet in the past few entries, with Dom and crew fighting off various threats in New York City, Tokyo, Rio, Rome, and even outer space. But by the sounds of it, Fast Forever will be going back to where it all began: Los Angeles.

When speaking at the previously mentioned Collide panel, director Louis Leterrier didn’t reveal a whole lot about the plot. However, he did say he and everyone else “wanna bring it back home,” which heavily implied a return to the City of Angels for more than just a barbecue.

In March 2026, Vin Diesel took to his Instagram to address the upcoming sequel and “the weight that comes with delivering a finale,” writing:

There is a particular weight that comes with delivering a finale. A responsibility you feel in your chest, to everyone who gave something to get here, to the audience that stayed. You don’t take that lightly. You take it as fuel. And when you find out you’re going back to Los Angeles… back to the streets where it all began, something clicks into place. The city that made the first film feel alive, still here, still holding. Coming home to close it out right. That’s not logistics. That’s a gift.

Honestly, going back to the basics after watching the series get wilder and more far-fetched over the years (especially that big cliffhanger in Fast X) will be a breath of fresh air for the franchise. Please let there be multiple street-racing sequences for old time’s sake.

Fast Forever Will Be The ‘Grand Finale’ Of The Main Franchise’

In the years leading up to its release, Fast X had the tagline, “The end of the road begins,” with the upcoming Fast & Furious 11 being billed as the final chapter in the saga. And while Vin Diesel has alluded to this not being the case in the past, the franchise star and producer has changed his tune. In a February 2024 Instagram post about the status of the movie, Diesel referred to the movie as the “grand finale, stating:

This grand finale is not just an ending; it’s a celebration of the incredible family we’ve built together.

However, with a couple of spinoffs, including Dwayne Johnson’s planned solo film, in the planning stages, this will most likely not be the end of the Fast & Furious franchise entirely.

Fast Forever Is Being Written By Michael Lesslie

As pointed out in Vin Diesel’s Instagram post above, it’s hard to count how many writers have been involved with the franchise over the years. Well, another name has been added to that list. In his post, Diesel announced that Michael Lesslie, the screenwriter behind the Hunger Games prequels and Now You See Me 3, has been tapped to pen the final chapter of this NOS-fueled series.

Shortly after the sprawling post, Variety reported that Lesslie, who is reportedly in talks to write the upcoming X-Men movie, is rewriting a script previously written by Aaron Rabin and Zach Dean. How much of that original vision will carry over is anyone’s guess, but any news is good news at this point.

Vin Diesel Is Planning A Short Film To Bridge The Gap Between The 10th And 11th Films

In addition to the main films and the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff, the Fast & Furious franchise has had a pair of short films to bridge the gap between movies: 2003’s Turbo-Charged Prelude and 2009’s Los Bandoleros. Well, it appears that this will be the case once again, as Vin Diesel has reportedly been asked to make a short between the events of Fast X and Fast Forever.

In a March 2025 Instagram post, the actor and producer revealed that Universal requested him to come in and direct the “precursor to the finale.” Though he didn’t provide any plot points, the franchise mainstay said he is encouraged to film somewhere “truly exotic.”

Fast Forever Will Have Some Kind Of Proper Sendoff For Brian O’Conner

It has been more than a decade since Paul Walker’s tragic death, and nine years since fans of the Fast & Furious franchise were able to say goodbye to the late actor in the incredibly emotional Furious 7 ending sequence. In the film, Walker's character, Brian O'Conner, retired from his life of crime to raise a family.

However, when speaking with Total Film (via GamesRadar) ahead of the Fast X release, Vin Diesel alluded to some kind of proper sendoff for O’Conner in the upcoming Fast Forever:

That moment in 2013 when the world was struggling with his loss, the studio made a very bold and righteous and daring decision to keep Brian O’Conner alive. I will give you this without spoiling anything: I couldn’t imagine this saga ending without truly saying goodbye to Brian O’Conner.

It’s not known if this means we’ll see Paul Walker’s brothers stand in for the late star like in Furious 7, but whatever happens will make for another emotional moment for the franchise.

How To Watch The Previous Fast & Furious Movies

The March 2028 release of Fast Forever is still a ways off, which means you have plenty of time to go back and watch all previous 11 movies (plus those two short films) over the next couple of years. While you can totally watch them all in a short amount of time, it might be best to spread them out. That said, here’s how and where you can watch all the Fast & Furious movies streaming

There is still a lot we don’t yet know about Fast Forever, but expect that to change in the coming months as we look toward its 2028 release.

Writing gigs with school newspapers, multiple daily newspapers, and other varied job experiences led him to this point where he actually gets to write about movies, shows, wrestling, and documentaries (which is a huge win in his eyes). If the stars properly align, he will talk about For Love Of The Game being the best baseball movie of all time.
